Nuu-chah-nulth carvers featured at festival Continued from page 1. “We have to save what we have left,” said Paul of the workshops. “I was taught that the greatest art of all is the art of giving. Don’t keep it to yourself. Pass it on. You have to keep it alive.” There will also be a market of cedar

weavings, medicines, and carvings. Contact us if you wish to arrange a table. Tla-o-qui-aht canoe carving brothers Joe Martin and Carl Martin will be teaching Traditional Canoe Building in Tofino over a 10-day workshop in downtown Tofino at 316 Main St.

The agility and durability of our finelytuned West Coast canoes is definitely something worth learning more about. Their immense experience in carving dug-out canoes for communities up and down the coast is sure to intrigue participants. People are welcome to sign up for the complete 10 days or on a daily basis by calling 250-726-5062. There will be an evening of Legends and Carving with First Nations carvers on Thursday, Sept. 22 at the Eagle Aerie Gallery in Tofino. Family carving classes will be held on Tofino’s village green on Sept. 24. This festival was born out of local

community members who love their carvers, with a steering committee of First Nations and non-First Nations artists. The festival strives to create collaborative artistic spaces where both traditional and contemporary art forms can be celebrated. There are many ways for local artists to get more involved. Contact the festival coordinators at carvingfest@gmail.com and please check out updates and more details on our website www.carvingedge.ca or Carving on the Edge Festival on facebook. See you there!

INSURANCE REQUIREMENT OUT OF PROVINCE AND COUNTRY Recent situations have caused financial hardship to some people who Depart Canada without acquiring any type of medical coverage insurance. NonInsured Health Benefits Program through Health Canada does not cover anyone who departs Canada, nor does your BC Medical Plan unless you have written authority form them stating that they will cover you, and what they will cover. (Remember the price is much higher in US than here - I suggest you check it out to protect yourself and your family). Ensure you get coverage by contacting your local travel agency - they can and will help you! It is also understood that once you have departed Canada and you change your mind and decide you wish to have coverage - - it is too late...Travel policy insurance will not cover you in outside the country if you try to obtain insurance after you have left. Protect yourself and your family! Questions on this matter are encouraged and welcomed through the NonInsured Health Benefits Program Coordinator (Robert Cluett) 1-888-407-4888 or 250-724-5757.
