Ahousaht welcomes B.C. competitors

Port Alberni—Junior boys and girls basketball teams from across British Columbia gathered at Port Alberni’s Athletic Hall on March 15 for the opening ceremony of the Junior All Native Provincial Basketball Championship hosted by Ahousaht.

More than 650 registered athletes, coaches and managers entered the gym in their teams as the Ahousaht singers sang a welcome to them. The Gingolx (Kincolith) Junior Girls showed their pride as each of them danced into the venue.

The capacity crowd erupted with enthusiasm as Ahousaht entered the hall.

Excitement was in the air as hundreds of the team members’ family cheered them on.

There were many Ahousaht volunteers who quickly fed the estimated 2,000 people who gathered for the celebrations.

There were 47 teams participating in the popular tournament held annually during the Spring Break.

Ahousaht Tyee Ha’wilth Maquinna Lewis George, along with the ha’wiih of Ahousaht, blanketed the Nootka Rebels Junior Basketball Coach John Amos and presented him with a Ta-ulth-maa (like a cane) to hold him, his team and community members up with the recent loss of elder and council member, Arnold James, who passed away that weekend.

Nelson Keitlah Sr. spoke in Nuu-chahnulth on behalf of the ha’wiih. He also introduced the chiefs: Maquinna, Hiiyup-in-ulth (Billy Keitlah Jr.), A-in-chut Shawn Atleo, as well as chiefs Ron George and Irvin Frank, who will take Cosmos Frank, seat, Irvin’s late father.

Keitlah acknowledged and thanked the Hupacasath and Tseshaht First Nations for allowing Ahousaht to be in their traditional territories. Gifts of blankets and money were presented to Tseshaht and Hupacasath. Hughie Watts then briefly spoke.

The Athletic Hall in Port Alberni was packed with participants of the BC Junior All Native Basketball Championships held March 16 to 20. The tournament was hosted by Ahousaht and for opening ceremonies on March 15 the community fed about 2,000 people. said Watts.

Hupacasath Chief Judith Sayers also welcomed all of the teams and wished everyone well. She encouraged the young athletes to play hard and wished good luck to all the teams.

Port Alberni Mayor Ken McRae then welcomed all the participants to the Port Alberni and the Alberni Clayoquot Regional District. McRae said the area had a rich basketball history, including a time in the 1960s when the Canadian men’s basketball champions called the area home.

Hii-yup-in-ulth then did his welcome song and dance with all of the Ahousaht basketball players, coaches and managers asked to dance for him. This was then followed by a very special song and dance done by the Wolfpack players.

The Thomas brothers then called out Greg Charlie, Beau Campbell, Joseph George Jr., Brion Robinson and Saul Brown and presented them with shawls and the wolf head dresses that they danced with. The crowd was in awe of the dance and also the special presentation. The teams were then released, as the games were getting underway at 8 a.m. the next morning at three venues—Athletic Hall, Alberni District Secondary School and Maht Mahs.

At a meeting earlier in the day it was announced that Prince Rupert Friendship House had won the bid to host the 2010 Junior Boys and Girls All Native Provincial Championships. They narrowly edged out their neighbouring community of New Aiyansh.

Ha-Shilth-Sa belongs to every Nuu-chah-nulth person including those who have passed on, and those who are not yet born. A community newspaper cannot exist without community involvement. Ahousaht Blazerz trumped by Haisla squad

Port Alberni–The Ahousaht Blazerz junior girls basketball squad finished in second place at the All Native provincial championships held March 16 to 20.

The Blazerz were defeated by the Haisla team from Kitamaat with a score of 38–28. Coach Luke Swan was disappointed because the team felt they had a great chance to win. Unfortunately the Blazerz could not find the net in a close defensive battle.

It took both teams a while, in fact, before they scored their first baskets.

Star players Toni Schutte and Sabrina Williams teamed up for the Blazerz first bucket. Shutte stole the ball and fed her teammate who drained a three-pointer in the second minute of the game.

Williams would leave the game before the first quarter with a leg injury.

Marayna Amos scored Kitamaat’s first basket at the two and a half minute mark. Amos later went to the line for two shots and made both her free throws for Kitamaat’s first lead.

Both teams seemed to be fighting a case of the nerves. The Blazerz could not capitalize on steals and layups.

Kitamaat led by one point after the quarter, a lead that they would not relinquish.

Her Blazerz team tried valiantly to overtake the Haisla squad from Kitamaat in the final, but they proved too much for the Ahousaht team. The Blazerz could not seem to penetrate the Haisla zone defence and missed hitting their jump shots too. The lead for Kitamaat at the half was 20–17.

Prince Rupert Friendship House sent the Tribesmen to battle in the junior boys All Native basketball championships, and the team took top honors in the final March 20.

The All Star team for the 2009 Junior Boys were Darren Metz and Jeremy Nyce from Kitamaat; Charlie Leeson and Daniel Haldane from Friendship House; Greg Charlie, Saul Brown and Beau Campbell from the Wolfpack; Terrance Lewis from Squamish; Cody Hance from the Okanagan and Cole Edinger from Skidegate. Edinger was the top scorer for the tournament tallying 163 points.

The Best Defensive Player was Charlie Leeson from the Friendship House and his teammate Glen Blandov was chosen as the sixth man trophy.

Saul Brown was chosen Mr. Hustle and the Most Inspirational Player was Greg Charlie from the Wolfpack.

A-in-chut (Shawn Atleo) presented a Steve Nash autographed jersey to Joseph George Jr. of Ahousaht Wolfpack who was chosen as the Most Sportsmanlike Player. Friendship House player Adrian Robinson was chosen the

Most Valuable Player for the tournament.

In other games: Witwaak lost their first game against Lytton as they ran out of substitutes due to injury. Also a few players decided to take family vacations and Witwaak was left short-handed for the games. They would bounce back and defeat Tseshaht before losing to Bella Coola. Tseshat won their first game against Ehattesaht 41–40, but would then lose to Kitamaat and Witwaak. Ehattesaht lost two straight games, first to Tseshaht and then to Ehattesaht.

Just prior to the trophy presentations Joseph George led the Ahousaht and Nuu-chah-nulth singers in the Ahousaht victory song. This was a tribute to all of the teams and players who played in the tournament. Coach Rick Lindholm was presented with a beautiful carved mask by the ha’wiih of Ahousaht and thanked for all his years of service to Ahousaht, especially the youth.

Kitamaat was able to hit from the outside and took an 11-point lead after three quarters, 32–19. The Blazerz were held to two points in the third.

Schutte tried valiantly to bring the Blazerz back, but it was just not meant to be. Schutte scored 18 of her teams 28 points, but was the only player in double digits. For Kitamaat, Miranda Ross tallied 16 points, Marlayna Amos scored 10 points and point-guard Adeila Paul

scored eight.

“Our key to our win was our team defence. We have been teaching the team weak side help all season and it paid off for us in today’s game,” said Kitamaat coach Keith Nyce. Another key in the victory was containing star player Toni Schutte.

In an earlier match up the day before Kitamaat was defeated by the Blazerz, 51 – 44. Shutte and Williams tallied 18 and 16 points respectively forcing Kitamaat to come through the back door on the consolation side to make it to the final. Kitamaat defeated the Sasinn team from Hitatsoo.

Sasinn led after the first quarter 18–14, but Kitamaat soon took over the game, at one time tallying an 11–0 run.

Sasinn scored only five points in the second quarter and trailed Kitamaat at the half 32–19. The final score ended up with the Kitamaat team with a convincing 66–48 win.

Adelia Paul played a great game for Kitamaat and led the team with 29 points. Star player Raylene McReath had 26 points for Sasiin.

Earlier in the tournament, Sasinn lost an exciting double overtime game to Kitamaat who won a thriller 79–70.

Sasinn would also have wins over Kincolith by a score of 61–37. Shay Leann Little sored 15 points and McReath and Nicole Botting each scored 12 points. Sasiin also defeated New Aiyansh, (score not available).

They then faced Bella Coola in an exciting match. They went on a 13–2 run in the third quarter to take control of a close game and led 46–33.

Bella Coola then made a run of 12–6 at one time and trailed 59–48. Jolene Pootlass hit four three-pointers in a row in the fourth quarter, and brought Bella Coola within four points in the fourth.

Sasinn would however hold on for the victory, 77–70. McReath led the way with 29 points, Shay Leann Little had 14, Sabrina Campbell had 13 and Nicole Botting tallied 10 in a balanced scoring effort from Sasinn. Pootlass scored 22 points, including five three-pointers and Phoebe Andy scored 14 for Bella Coola.

The Ahousaht Blazerz defeated Kamloops in their first game, then the Friendship House from Prince Rupert 79–41. Schutte led the Blazerz with 23 points and Sabrina Williams tallied 16 points. The Blazerz then faced the defending champions from Bella Coola.

The Ahousaht Stars defeated LaxKw’alaams before losing to Kitamaat and then a very close game by a single point to East Vancouver. The Nuu-chahnulth Lady Warriors lost to Gingolx (Kincolith) in their first game and then defeated Tseshaht. They would then lose to Gitwinksihlkw (Canyon City).

There were 22 teams who participated in the Junior Girls All Native provincials. Taking first place was Kitamaat; second place Ahousaht Blazerz and third place Sasinn.

All stars for the tournament were Miranda Ross, Adeila Paul and Marlayna Ross from the Kitamaat team; Toni Schutte and Sabrina Williams from Ahousaht Blazerz; Raylene McReath and Nicole Botting from Sasiin; Jonelle Pootlass from Bella Coola; Jasmine Montgomery-Reid and Ashley McGinnis from Similkameen; Mariah Barker from

Canyon City and Lena Doolan from Kincolith.

Toni Schutte from the Blazerz was awarded the Miss Hustle award, as well as the top scorer of the tournament with 127 points. Roxanne Touchie from Sasinn was awarded the sixth player award and Chantelle Dick from the Blazerz was chosen the Best Defensive Player award.

Andy from Bella Coola. The award was a signed Steve Nash jersey. The Atleo family sponsored the award. Andy was last year’s Most Valuable Player in the Junior girls tournament in Kamloops.

The Most Sportsmanlike Team was awarded to Similkameen. Young Shakayla Thomas who is only nine years old was chosen as the Most Inspirational Player. Sabrina Williams won the threepoint shootout and Adeila Paul from Kitamaat was chosen the Most Valuable Player for the tournament.

Hawks’ coach thrilled with young team’s effort The Ditidaht Hawks played four games, but split the win/loss. They first faced the strong Prince Rupert Friendship House Tribesmen and were soundly beaten. They then defeated Nanaimo 60–52 and Kamloops (score unavailable) before bowing out to Lytton.

In a close game, the Ditidaht team were losing by quite a margin against Lytton. Coach Brent Daniels then said that the elders and community members from Ditidaht started singing and cheering them on. Ditidaht made a valiant effort, but could not overcome the Lytton squad who prevailed with a 70–57

win.

“I was thrilled with our young team’s performance as I believe that we peaked at the games here this week. Matter of fact, I could not be happier for our young team,” said Coach Brent Daniels.

He is a teacher and volunteer coach for the young Ditidaht Hawks basketball team. With less than five minutes to play, the Hawks were only down by four points, 52–48, however Lytton then took control of the game. Coach Daniels conceded the game as he took off his older players and sent in all of his young players.

Young Gunz battle hard but provincial dreams dashed The Nuu-chah-nulth Young Gunz lost their opening game in the BC All Native Basketball Championship to Squamish by a score of 65–53.

Squamish built up a 13–8 lead in the first quarter. Mike Johnson hit a threepointer with no time left in the quarter to bring the Young Gunz within two points as they trailed 15–13. Each team went on mini runs in the second quarter, however, the Squamish held a slim lead 29–27 over the Young Gunz.

Mike Johnson and Darryl Patterson fouled out of the game in the fourth and the Young Gunz could not muster many points after that. Chancellor Frank had 15 points in the loss and Patterson scored

12 points for the Gunz.

The Young Gunz then faced the Ahousaht Magic. After the first quarter they led 29–7 as the Magic trailed 15–0 with just over three minutes into the game. The final score was not available, however the Young Gunz prevailed. The Young Gunz then faced Homis and defeated them 100–74. The Young Gunz led in a close game to the half 47–40.

They took over in the third quarter and outscored Homis 30–14 to take a commanding 77–58 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Young Gunz then faced LaxKw’alaaams from Port Simpson and lost (score unavailable).

Nuu-chah-nulth fisheries litigation enters final days

Vancouver—“It’s been a twisting road,” said John Rich, lawyer for the Nuu chah-nulth Nations in describing the journey of the Nuu-chah-nulth fisheries litigation now in its final stages before the B.C. Supreme Court.

He was responding to a question on March 9 about overlapping territory posed by Madam Justice Nicole Garson.

During the Nuu-chah-nulth’s final submissions in the case, in which the Nuu-chah-nulth Nations are attempting to prove title and rights to commercial fisheries access on the West Coast of Vancouver Island, Justice Garson was trying to remember if any of the boundaries of the individual Nations in the maps she was reviewing were subject to boundary disputes.

In fact, three of the Nations stood back from the case in 2007 because of unresolved boundary disputes. The six Nations remaining resolved their disputes before going forward with the case in early 2008.

Like Nuu-chah-nulth’s historical relationship to the land and sea, the history of this trial is a long one. The statement of claim for the case was filed in 2003, with the first day of court in April 2006. More than 100 days of testimony have come and gone since then, with experts describing in detail the importance of the fisheries resources in Nuu-chah-nulth territory to Nuuchah-nulth people, both pre-contact with Europeans and in the modern context.

Rows of binders and stacks of boxes filled with hundreds of years of historical records are among the materials that the Judge will soon rely upon in her decision. Ethnographers and anthropologists have pieced together descriptions of Nuu-chah-nulth trading activities for her consideration.

Nuu-chah-nulth people also took to the stand to describe Nuu-chah-nulth ancient community structures, laws, culture and practices, the Nuu-chahnulth concept of property rights, Hahoulthee (lands and possessions of the Chief of a territory), and a long reliance on the resources of the sea, described by one European explorer as the Nuu-chahnulth’s arable land.

Willard Gallic Was there an economy based on the trade of fish for the Nuu-chah-nulth before they met such seagoing European adventurers as Perez and Cook? The Nuu-chah-nulth have invested a great deal, sacrificing scarce financial resources, among other things, to prove that there was.

Canada asserts, however, that there was not a commercial component to the Nuu-chah-nulth’s harvest of fish precontact and therefore no right to a commercial fishery in modern day.

Canada’s expert, Dr. Joan Lovisek testified that the Nuu-chah-nulth’s trade of fish was “infrequent and opportunistic.”

To reach her conclusions, Judge Garson may have to define the term “commercial trade”. In their closing comments, Nuu-chah-nulth’s lawyers have directed the Court’s attention to testimony and a number of legal decisions to guide her deliberations.

Part of the effort for the plaintiffs (the Nuu-chah-nulth) has been to prove that the modern Nations and their territories are connected to the pre-contact peoples and those territories. This is to establish Nuu-chah-nulth title.

The plaintiffs have also worked to establish that trading fish was integral to the distinctive way of life of the precontact groups to establish the Nuuchah-nulth right.

Both sides have had to pull from a wide variety of sources to make their arguments.

Over the last few years, the Court has heard about a people with a highly developed sense of ownership, territory,

custom and protocol.

Willard Gallic was among a group of dedicated Nuu-chah-nulth who have followed the case over the years. He was in court to witness these final days. As a Tseshaht member, his Nation was forced to step aside from this case because of overlap issues, but he’s remained intently interested in the proceedings.

He told Ha-Shilth-Sa he was proud of the people who testified on behalf of the plaintiffs.

“It came from the hearts of the elders, and they told their story,” he said. “A lot of them are gone now, but if it wasn’t for them, our arguments wouldn’t be as strong today… without the testimony they came forward with.”

The Judge will soon weigh the evidence presented over these many days—during which she was even sung to by Julia Lucas during her testimony— and determine the facts of the Nuu-chahnulth claim.

But first she hears the closing comments from Canada and then one last time during a response from lawyers for the Nuu-chah-nulth.

Dr. Michelle Corfield, the vicepresident of the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council, said these final days in court will bring to a close an important chapter in Nuu-chah-nulth history, “where we as Nuu-chah-nulth people have tried

Real consequences An internal audit performed by Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) shows that programs designed to improve access to post-secondary education for First Nations and Inuit students continue to be wholly inadequate.

“The report is very negative and alarming,” said New Democrat Aboriginal Affairs critic Jean Crowder.

“In 2005 a similar audit raised all of the same concerns. Four years later, we’re still in the same spot.”

The audit concluded that there is not enough money to fund all students, no way of collecting evidence that the program is meeting its requirements and

there are inconsistencies in funding disbursements, resulting in regional inequalities.

New Democrats are calling on the Minister of Indian Affairs to have the officials responsible for the audit testify before the standing committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development to explain their findings, as well as proposals for addressing the identified shortfalls.

As Niki Ashton, New Democrat PostSecondary Education critic, pointed out, the problems identified in the audit, result in real people being locked out of the classroom.

Local students honored Camosun College honored 19 Aboriginal students at an awards dinner on March 10. Surrounded by family and friends the students received bursary awards at a special dinner hosted in their honor. About 80 people packed the cultural centre in support of the recipients, as staff and faculty from the Aboriginal Education and Community Connections department presented the awards.

The M’Akola Housing Award was donated through the M’Akola Housing Society, helps support off-reserve students in financial need. Five awards were presented and two of them went to Nuu-chah-nulth students: Dan Mack, Toquaht, and Tracy Thomas, Ahousaht.

Dan is currently in First Nations College Prep in order to qualify for admission into the Community Support Worker certificate program. Dan was born and raised in Victoria, though he makes regular visits to the traditional lands of his ancestors. It was this strong sense of connection that brought him to Camosun where he has discovered a burning passion for learning more about

his history and beliefs.

Tracy has recently moved back to Victoria after spending time in her home village of Ahousaht. There have been many struggles involved in moving back to the city, including the high cost of living, but Tracy is very determined to complete her diploma in Camosun’s new Indigenous Business Leadership program before going on to university to pursue a degree in Business Administration.

The Winona Wood Memorial Award is available to women in any program who plan to become more self-sufficient as a result of their education. Four awards were given out, including one to AnnMarie Livingston, Pacheedaht After being in the workforce for a decade, Ann-Marie has recently transitioned to being a full-time student in the Indigenous Business Leadership program. She has high aspirations for her education, planning to complete a Bachelor of Business Administration, followed by either a Masters degree or a Law degree. The primary career focus will to be involved in the advancement of Indigenous women.

Things to remember when trying to understand traumatic events No one who witnesses the event is untouched by it.

It is normal to feel anxious about you and your family’s safety.

Profound sadness, grief and anger are normal reactions to an abnormal event.

Acknowledging our feelings helps us recover.

Focusing on our strengths and abilities will help you to heal.

Accepting help from community programs and resources is healthy.

We each have different needs and different ways of coping.

It is common to want to strike back at people who have caused great pain.

However, nothing good is accomplished by hateful language or actions.

Maintain a normal household and daily routine, limiting your demanding responsibilities and those of your family.

Spend time with family and friends.

Participate in memorials, rituals and use of symbols as a way to express feelings.

Use existing support groups of family, friends and community.

Establish a family emergency plan.

Feeling that there is something that you can do can be very comforting.

MedEffect™ Canada is a gateway to the Canada Vigilance Program, which collects and assesses side-effect data related to health products.

Side effects can range from minor irritations – such as a rash – to lifethreatening reactions like a heart attack, kidney failure or liver damage. Despite prior pre-market testing, some side effects may not become evident until the general population uses a health product under “real life” circumstances, and might occur within minutes after use or take years to develop.

Workshop explores food security and access issues The Clayoquot Biosphere Trust will present two one-day sessions exploring local food, in the UNESCO Clayoquot Biosphere Reserve and area.

In partnership with EcoTrust Canada and Clayoquot Forest Communities Program, local experts and attendees will explore issues pertaining to local food security and access, commercial opportunities in food, nutritional education and traditional food production. The sessions are open to the public and free to attend, with lunch provided. Speakers will be announced closer to the events.

In 2008, the Clayoquot Biosphere Trust’s Board of Directors identified three core priorities: ‘Healthy Food, Healthy Communities’, ‘The Youth Biosphere’ and ‘The Biosphere Centre’.

If you want to vote on May 12 and have your say in the future of the province, now’s the time to take the first step and register to vote.

Excuse me if I’m preaching to the choir. More than 75 per cent of eligible voters in B.C. are already registered at the correct address, according to statistics we’ve compiled at Elections BC. It’s that last 25 per cent I’m concerned about. They’re the ones who still haven’t registered or may be registered incorrectly at the address where they used to live.

We’ve done our best to reach out to every eligible voter by sending enumeration notices to two million households across the province. But we have to do better, especially in the 21 electoral districts spread across much of the province that lag behind in voter registration, where as few as half the eligible voters are accurately registered.

That’s why I’m encouraging you to get on the list. Maybe you didn’t receive your enumeration notice, maybe you’ve moved recently, or perhaps you’ve only recently reached the voting age of 18. Or maybe you’re too busy with other issues like earning a living or taking care of your family.

Maybe you don’t know how easy it is to register to vote. You may be worried about finding the time or a parking space, facing line-ups or filling in complicated paper forms. Forget that. The reality is you can register in a few minutes by going online at elections.bc.ca or by calling 1-800-6618683, where our operators can register you over the phone. Please do it now.

Once you’re registered, voting will be a breeze. You’ll get a Where to Vote card telling you where your voting place is. When you show up on May 12, or on any one of the four advance voting days open to all voters from May 6 to 9, you’ll be in the express line to the ballot box.

Join the millions of British Columbians who are already on the list.

It’s the first but essential step in voting in the election and referendum on electoral reform.

If you’re already registered, ask your friends and relatives if they’re on the list. Tell them how easy it is, and how important it is to vote for the candidate of their choice, and for the electoral system of the future.

Camera club to display Financial assistance youth photo collection available for housing The First Nations Youth Photography Club and the Port Alberni Friendship Center are teaming up to host a Photo Exhibition and Slide Show on April 18 at Clutesi Hall in Port Alberni. The event will feature a collection of work by club members, particularly those living in Port Alberni. The exhibition is the first of a series that will take place in the photographers’ home communities, including Ahousaht, Esowista, Itattsoo, Opitsaht, Tofino and Ucluelet.

“We’re very excited,” said Irene Robinson, family literacy coordinator at the friendship centre. “Their work is amazing. I hope this show will help to launch a local chapter of the Photography Club.”

In addition to showing their talents to members of their communities, the photographers will have an opportunity to speak about their work and to share their experiences as photographers.

Founded in June 2006, the First Nations Youth Photography Club brings together youth ages 12 to 25 in a fun, healthy and creative activity that offers new

experiences, develops skills and encourages them to express themselves creatively.

In November, the club was featured as the Club of the Month on the Canadian Geographic Photo Club Web site.

Members have previously shown their work at art shows sponsored by the Pacific Rim Arts Society, the Talking Stick Festival in Vancouver and at the Sooke Museum in Victoria. Their work has been exhibited in Ottawa and locally during National Aboriginal Day. Club members help raise funds for activities, equipment, field trips and materials through the sale of photo cards.

These are available through local retailers and craft sales throughout the Alberni-Clayoquot region.

The Rental Assistance Program reimburses part of the difference between 30 per cent of your total income and your rent. The program has a sliding scale that gives the most money to people with the least income. The amount of assistance is calculated taking into account your household size, income, your rent, where you live and is subject to the maximum benefit.

Maximum Rent Levels: Effective April 2008 Regardless of actual amount of rent paid, the Rental Assistance Program will only be calculated based on amounts up to maximum rent levels.

An example of that is for a family of three or less the maximum rent allowable is $900.

Maximum Benefit Levels Under the Rental Assistance Program, the maximum benefit is the most rental assistance a household can receive. For example for a family of three or less the maximum rent benefit is $585 Financial Support for Seniors The Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters (SAFER) program helps make rents affordable for BC seniors with low to moderate incomes. SAFER provides monthly cash payments to subsidize rents for eligible BC residents who are age 60 or over and who pay rent for their homes. You and your spouse have to be Canadian Citizens and have lived in BC for the full 12 months immediately preceding your application.

You pay more than 30 per cent of your gross (before tax) monthly household income towards the rent for your home, including the cost of pad rental for a manufactured home (trailer) that you own and occupy.

If you are eligible, SAFER may subsidize part of the rent that is over 30 per cent of your income. The subsidy is calculated to give the most assistance to people with the least income.

KUU-US Crisis Line Society operates a number of different programs in the community. The AHRI (Aboriginal Homeless Response Initiative) program is one, and as part of this program exists a Homeless Coordinator who is responsible to work with landlords and tenants (who experience barriers to housing). In order to provide awareness around the issues of homelessness monthly articles will cover a variety of aspects focused on housing, community support services that are available, and education on the landlord/tenants rights and responsibilities.

The event was held so people could witness the momentous event together. From our little corner of the world, approximately 25 people gathered, enjoyed breakfast and watched with the rest of the world as the event unfolded. There was an air of awe, excitement and a sense of ‘disbelief’ about the fact that an African-American man was going to take a sacred oath to take the reins of the most powerful country in the world. There was silence as Barack Obama took the oath and comments of “Wow” and people shaking their heads as if it was still hard to believe. Barack Obama accomplished a feat that no one thought possible and we were fortunate enough to have witnessed such an event.

An Infant Massage course was offered at the Knee Waas Family Centre co-ordinated by Lorna Neuwirth and instructed by Jackie Watts of the Nuuchahnulth Tribal Council Sr. Infant Development Consultant.

This IM course took place from Nov. 21 to Dec. 19, 2008 for those parents who participated in the Infant Massage Course.

The International Association of Infant Massage was founded by Vimala McClure. In many cultures, the practice of massaging babies is an art passed down from generation to generation. Vimala combined her practical experiences, the positive effects of Indian Massage and Swedish massage, and principles from yoga and reflexology into a simple and beautiful routine and developed a complete course for parents.

TB fight continues

In keeping with this year’s theme for World TB Day—I am stopping TB—it is important to remember that everyone has a responsibility to address this public health concern: all levels of government, Aboriginal leaders, health professionals and the broader population.

In Canada, TB rates have fallen dramatically over the past 30 years. The incidence rate of TB in Canada, in 2007, was 4.7 cases per 100,000. This is the lowest reported rate of TB in Canada since the first TB surveillance data was collected in 1924. However, the disease continues to persist, especially among Aboriginal people.

Our government is working with provincial and territorial partners to curb the spread of tuberculosis and track and monitor this disease. In 2008–2009, Canada invested $6.5 million in funding to support on-reserve management of TB disease and infection. We also supported the Global Indigenous Stop-TB Expert Meeting held last November in Toronto

which brought together experts from around the world to develop an action plan to reduce TB among Indigenous populations. I applaud the work of the Assembly of First Nations and the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami who organized this meeting and continue to champion awareness of the effects of TB on Indigenous people in Canada and around the world.

Canada also collaborates closely with international partners such as the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, the Stop Tuberculosis Partnership, the Global Drug Facility, and the World Health Organization to combat tuberculosis through prevention and treatment initiatives.

This year, World TB Day celebrates the lives and stories of the women, men, and children affected by TB as well as nurses, doctors, researchers and community workers who continue the global fight against the disease. As an Inuk growing up in Canada’s North, I’ve seen how vital it is for communities to collaborate to bring about lasting change. Let’s continue to work together to make it happen!

Make a flag, win a trip Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) has launched its third annual National Aboriginal Day Live Flag contest.

APTN is inviting young people between 12 and 17 years old from across the country to design a flag that shows the richness and diversity of all of Canada’s Aboriginal Peoples. The flag contest is just one part of APTN’s 2009 National Aboriginal Day Live celebrations, which also include live performances by some of Canada’s top Aboriginal artists on stages in Winnipeg, Manitoba and Whitehorse, Yukon.

As Canada’s only Aboriginal broadcaster, the flag contest is just one of the ways APTN is providing opportunities for young people to share their vision and pride in Aboriginal culture and heritage.

The person who designs the winning flag and a parent/guardian will be flown to Winnipeg to be part of APTN’s National Aboriginal Day celebrations for June 20. The celebrations will be broadcast live on APTN from the stages in Winnipeg and Whitehorse.

The winning flag will fly on top of APTN’s headquarters in downtown Winnipeg. The winner will also earn a cash prize of $400 and the winner’s school will receive $750 towards the purchase of a new computer.

The contest opens April 1. Entries should reflect the rich diversity of the First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples in Canada. All entries must be received

by May 15 at midnight eastern time.

Highlight of college life Greetings to all readers out there, near and far. It’s been awhile since I’ve sent anything into the paper.

I guess I just needed a “good friend” to tell me. To my friend Evelyn Louie of Ucluelet, thanks for reminding me. Overall, I just would like to share that the Ahousat North Island College students went on a Student Exchange to Campbell River. Thanks to my bro “Chief” Charles Thomas for driving us there and back. It was an awesome experience. Seven of the students went to career fair.

There is so much that they offer out there. There are so many trades out there. It really opened my eyes to what is available. I even got a nice massage from a lady named Karen. I was surprised that I won a free draw. A notebook with a pen. Must have been a message right there already to share my thoughts to the world.

I just want to share that it was a honor to get invited over to the Campbell River for a student exchange. Of course I met a lot of people too. Especially when I know that I am going to the college, up here in Ahousat, and to know that there are others going to the college elsewhere.

That marks my life. I want to get out there and make a difference. My goal at the college is to complete my English and First Nation Studies. I find that the First Nation studies really makes me realize about my beliefs and values. The culture aspect of First Nations. I love it.

I certainly enjoy the times, and planning with the students at the college. I really would like to put my hands up to my sister Mrs. Colleen A. Clarke. She motivates me into going to the college. She has the time and space to come pick me up every morning. She helps me with my English. Anyway, this is the “highlights” up at the college. I love it up there, especially with my friends. Always have fun up there.

Laughter, tears, sharing, caring and always have something to eat.

Thanks for reading this. Have a better day and a good week ahead of you. I can’t wait to go back to the college.

The Spring Break, seemed so slow. Oh well, had some good quality time with my girls.

I finally got to Australia at midnight it was so warm there. I stayed in Perth and Yalling-up for 3 weeks. It was a very big experience for me and I LOVED BEING DOWN UNDER! Birthdays & Congratulations I would like to congratulate my son Brian K. George (Robinson) for his recent accomplishments in his career choices, and a big thank you to the staff of the NETB, Holly and Wendy for their assistance to get Brian where he is today. The photo shows Brian hard at work manually falling big fir trees near Qualicum, and thanks to the staff at BC Forest Safety Council, Steve Teloski has given Brian that extra edge that is needed when learning this very hard and dangerous job.

As well as Brian’s newest work endeavor, he has been a team member of the Port Alberni Thunderbird Native Unit crew (well it started out as an all native unit crew back in 1992) and this year he has accepted a position again with the Thunderbirds.

Finally, it gives us great pleasure to include his common-law wife Letitia Jacqueline Titian to the family and also

the little one that is expected any day, she has been a great support for Brian and we can hardly wait for the baby to arrive.

Congratulations Brian and hope that you will be able to run Uchuck Forestry Services in the near future. As Uchuck Forestry Services grows in hand falling and contract fire suppression you shall be a great leader.
