You can count on us.... Some of the numerous activities at the DHC in the last 12 months:

By Lauren Shapiro

3651 learners

from schools around the province have been guided through the museum as part of our formal education programme. The Holocaust is part of the Grade 9 national curriculum, so these workshops support learners and their teachers. History is about so much more than memorizing facts. We make sure learners learn the stories behind the facts.

9 teacher training workshops

reaching 367 teachers and principals have been held to help educators work with complex themes like identity, discrimination, and belonging. The focus of these workshops included classroom methodologies as well as the socio-historical background to the history.

12 adult groups

from book clubs to academic alumni to senior citizens organisations have been guided through the centre. We also host plenty of cultural societies who want to learn more about the Holocaust and how to use this period of history to foster tolerance today.

6 international tours

including regular delegations from the School for International Training (SIT), have put the DHC on their itineraries. SIT prepares students to be intercultural leaders, so a grounding in the information and compassion we offer is invaluable. Groups from Boston Jesuit College in the United States and a youth group from Bremen, Germany have also made a point of visiting our world-class centre.

2 new staffers

have joined the DHC’s education department. Grade 8 teacher and social media aficionado Gugu Radebe says, “I can’t wait until 2018 when I join full time to teach young people about the roles they play and the power they have to make a difference in protecting democracy in South Africa.” Former teacher and self-confessed beach bum Michelle Murray explains, “the issue of human rights should never be shelved in a history textbook, but be actively pursued in the lived learning experience. I am beyond excited to be part of the DHC’s vision in doing exactly this.”

11 professionals and their teams

have spent the last three months renewing the centre’s permanent exhibition. Design consultants, printers, AV technicians, painters, shopfitters, flooring experts, electricians and prop artists have refreshed the look and technology in the museum, creating a state of the art setting for a meaningful visitor experience. The content of the exhibits has also been updated to include data from newly uncovered records and archives, ensuring that the DHC is always offers the most current and reliable information on this important era of history.

200 cheesecakes

and countless cups of coffee have been consumed at the Circle Café and Gift Shop. July was a record month for the café, enjoying the highest turnover in the establishment’s history. All proceeds from the café and gift shop go directly towards supporting the DHC’s educational programmes.

James Young, Professor of English and Judaic studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, served on the design committee for the Berlin Holocaust Memorial and adjudicated New York's September 11 Memorial Design Competition. Sunday 12 November, 18h00, Durban Holocaust Centre Revisiting the German Genocide in South West Africa (1904-1908) Prof Henning Melber speaks about the context and consequences of colonial mass violence. Monday 27 November, 19h30, Durban Holocaust Centre
