AKIVA COLLEGE HASHALOM – AUGUST 2019
67 MINUTES FOR MANDELA This year Grade 000 to Grade 8 Akiva College students celebrated Mandela Day by spending 67 minutes making sandwiches at school. The sandwiches were then donated to the Domino Foundation who run a feeding program for underprivileged school children. The high school students spent their 67 minutes at the Durban Jewish Centre helping to make sandwiches with many of the Jewish community organisations. 16 HASHALOM

COMMEMORATING THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF WWII 1 September this year marks the 80th anniversary of the start of WWII. The war officially began on this date when Germany invaded Poland and two days later the United Kingdom and France declared war on Germany. Before the start of the war, the Nazis had already begun perpetrating acts of hatred against the Jews of Germany and other victim groups. About half of the German Jewish population had already fled Germany as refugees to other nations and approximately 6000 came to South Africa. Poland was home to the largest Jewish population in Europe and with Germany's invasion in 1939, over 3 million Polish Jews were now in the hands of the Nazis. Between 1939 and 1945, the Nazis would commit the greatest crime in history under the veil of war.Â
As we approach 5780 in the Jewish calendar, we at the DHGC wish you and your loved ones a happy, healthy and successful New Year and well over the Fast. 18 HASHALOM

MANDELA DAY MITZVAH Ahavah Tahorah member Dani Nathan initiated a Mandela Day mitzvah of a wheelchair build for her Crawford La Lucia Grade 7 class. The eager students built 9 wheelchairs and took great pride in partnering with WIZO to “change lives”. Their mitzvah will come to fruition when then join us for the official handover at the Valley Trust on 20 August. We are very proud of these caring young souls!
AHAVA TAHORA ROCK STARS! On Sunday 4 August our Ahava Tahorah girls got together for an enthusiastic idea exchange. With much excitement they have conjured up some great ideas for the Yom Tov Market. They will be running a kiddie’s programme as well selling their own self-styled goods. True to their name they continue to act with all-embracing kindness & PURE LOVE. So please diarize the Yom Tov Market which is on Sunday 15 September @ DJC. Our Ahava Tahorah Rock Stars look forward to your support!
