DURBAN

WELCOME… AHAVAH TAHORAH By Michelle Nathan WIZO Durban together with World WIZO Aviv is incredibly proud to officially welcome our newest group - Ahavah Tahorah. These committed young WIZO women aged between twelve & twenty-one years old, identified the need for a young group, and through their own initiative established Ahavah Tahorah meaning “Pure Love”.

Liora Plen leads the Channukah candle lighting

At their first get-together on 8 December 2018, Ahavah Tahorah was officially born. Together they lit Chanukah candles, celebrated with traditional dancing and enjoyed brainstorming creative ideas for the future. With Tyra Nackan as the dynamic leader it is with much excitement Ahavah Tahorah are revving to go forward! These incredible WIZO Durban trailblazers have taken an historical step for us by breathing youthful life back into our organization, we are thrilled to watch them grow and thrive.

An incredible experience, from start to finish By Mandy Nackan WIZO’S work encompasses so much of Israeli society and I have been inspired by all of the amazing work that they do. Being given the opportunity to attend the Aviv WIZO Mission I was able to learn and experience this first hand. Before embarking on the Aviv WIZO mission I had the privilege of visiting 3 of the WIZO South African sponsored projects in Tel Aviv. Together with Vivienne Stiller and Caren Peer we spent some time at NEVE WIZO, a long - term foster family home for children aged 4-18 years old who have been removed from their broken homes either by court order or due to their parents’ inability to raise them. Yardena Yof the director of NEVE WIZO explained to us that NEVE WIZO provides everything for these children, weather it is physically, academically, emotionally or socially. The following project was one of my favorites, a day care centre where we were welcomed by little voices singing. This centre can be described as “ Mashona Ahava” which means a day care centre filled with love, you could really feel the love. The final project that we visited was Ironi Cariera. This is a treatment and rehabilitation centre for the youth from dysfunctional families. This facility offers them an opportunity to obtain their matric certificates. Children are taught basic vocational skills such as cooking and hairdressing. We spent time in the kitchen watching the teens learning to make their own cous cous and fish. Then, off to Jerusalem for a very busy seminar together with 20 young women from around the world. Our journey began on Thursday evening at Shilo, an incredible archeological site situated in the West Bank. Our evening was spent at Psagot winery where we all got to know each other, ate delicious food, and danced to traditional Israeli music. We had the privilege of meeting and listening to Rachelle Fraenkel, the mother of one of the three boys that were kidnapped and murdered, an inspirational woman.

Friday morning kicked off with an incredible kabbalat shabbat with the children of the WIZO Falic Day Care Centre. This day care centre is open from 7:00am until 7:00pm Monday to Friday and caters for those parents who are in service. Friday evening was spent at the Kotel followed by an unforgettable Shabbat dinner. A quiet morning walk through the historical Yemin Moshe neighbourhood on Saturday was followed by Shabbat lunch where we heard extremely emotional testimonies by 3 young adults and how they have succeeded through the WIZO institutions in Israel. Sunday mornings visit to WIZO Nahlat Yehuda Youth Village was a highlight for me, workshop on getting to know WIZO, a game of Mammanet, fundraising workshop, sharing and showcasing what we have done in our federations and what ideas we can implement back home. We visited the WIZO Rebecca Sieff Centre for the family on Monday morning where we were taken on a tour of the amazing facilities. The domestic violence woman centre is home to woman who may be in abusive relationships, it provides a place of comfort and safety for them. I was treated to having my hair done by one of the students at the vocational school within the centre. The evening was spent at Eretz Bereshit where rode Camels and enjoyed a total traditional desert experience, followed by a workshop on BDS and advocating for Israel. After visiting all the various projects, receiving guidance and mentorship as well as lessons regarding Israel and WIZO I am grateful that I was given this opportunity, the experience has enlightened me and made me more aware of the work that is being done by WIZO.

T

he red carpet set the scene for the November 2018 Israel United Appeal-United Communal Fund (IUA-UCF) annual gala fundraising event - which was proudly sponsored by Investec; Hirezone, The Furniture lab; and; Don’t Waste Services.

The evening began with a plea from Michael Selikow, Chairman of the UCF, as he thanked his dynamic team for their incredible efforts this year and noted that over the past three years he has been able to applaud the UCF’s success in building for the future, during tough times and 2018 proved to be the most challenging year for the UCF. “We cannot kid ourselves. This is not business as usual.” Selikow said, adding that the UCF relies on donations in order to help keep our community moving forward, “as the needs are the greatest we have ever experienced.” Selikow continued to say that going forward it is no longer about how far the UCF has come, but rather how far the UCF has to go. “We are living in an extremely turbulent and challenging time for everyone. Our recipients on our welfare organisations are growing at a faster rate than we anticipated.” Selikow said. Selikow concluded his speech with a meaningful quote from Rabbi Sacks, “Acts of kindness never die. They linger in the memory, giving life to others in return.” South African Jewish Board of Deputies Kwa-Zulu Natal (SAJBD KZN) president Jeremy Droyman said that he was very proud of Selikow and commended him for all his efforts and wisdom. Droyman also thanked his amazing team and exuded great pride in the Durban community, “We are a very old and well-structured

By Hayley Lieberthal community with an amazing thirty to forty years of experience as our foundation, it is a very privileging feeling.” Droyman continued to say that the affiliates of the SAJBD KZN encompass the heart of the community and thanked them for all the work that they do. “It is an absolute privilege to lead you and to lead you again and I would like to say that I don’t do this by myself; it is a community effort,” Droyman said in conclusion. Members of the community waited with baited breath to listen to the evenings keynote speaker - investigative journalist and author Jacques Pauw, talk about his latest best seller “The Presidents Keepers” and how state capture has affected our country. “Never again,” Pauw said highlighting the Jewish Defense League’s slogan which is now known worldwide for our stand against anti-Semitism. Pauw said that he thinks South Africa has reached the stage to say “Never again” for state capture and corruption in our government. Pauw is optimistic about South Africa’s future and believes that it will take President Cyril Ramamphosa’s first term of office to get South Africa back on track to when Jacob Zuma was elected president. Pauw continued to say that when he is asked about South Africa’s future he implores people to stay in S.A as there will be a future if we stay and make it work. “Look where we came from and look what we have done since 1994.” Pauw who is retired from journalism and is now an owner of a guest house, restaurant and bar in Riebeek Kasteel, said that he sees himself as a realist and thinks that S.A has had as bad as it gets, “the fact that we as a country succeeded in getting Jacob Zuma out of office, says everything about the spirit and power of South Africans and that we should applaud ourselves.

Union of Jewish Women

The Shabbat Project 2018

“Stop doing and start being” was the theme of the 2018 Shabbat project. In order to do this one needed to CONNECT and the UJW JCF Challah Bake helped the ladies from our community do just that. The ladies were reminded that the Challah Bake is not really about the challah… it’s about Connecting as Jewish Women of Durban; Connecting with our Jewish Heritage by making challah together, an age old tradition passed down from generation to generation of Jewish women; Connecting with Hashem as we prayed for our families and our friends and for all who are ill and Connecting with The Shabbath… a day of rest, reflection and connections. The event began with an uplifting and memorable Shiur about Emunah (Faith) by Lana Meltzer from Johannesburg. Her advice of strengthening our faith by changing attitudes to everyday situations gave us all much food for thought. We were also so privileged to, once again, have Robyn Smookler lead our Challah Bake. Robyn brought an incredible energy, passion and depth to our Challah Bake, ensuring an unforgettable experience for the 150 ladies and girls present. We all reluctantly floated away after a really meaningful, magical and uplifting evening of Israeli dancing and beautiful singing by Leah Meltzer, Arielle Levitan as well as Galia and Yael Meltz. Kol Hakavod to the UJW Women of Action. Until next year……….

DUHC Chevra Kadisha... Honouring 125 years of service

018 marked the historical 125th year that the DUHC Chevra Kadisha has served the Durban Jewish community. Durban has been

blessed to have members who have always volunteered for this noble and holy work. To celebrate & share this milestone achievement with the community, on 3 November the Chevra Kadisha sponsored both Brochas at the UJC and the Silverton Road Shul. In tandem with this special initiative, on Sunday 11 November a delicious commemorative luncheon catered by Selma Lurie, was held at the UJC to honour the Chevra Kadisha members who have served the community of Durban performing Judaism’s important mitzvah of “Chesed v’Emet”. It was a privilege to have Chief Rabbi Dr. Warren Goldstein officiate and address the members. He commended the dedicated work of this Holy Society, who has so gracefully performed pure “acts of true kindness and dignity”. Special acknowledgment and appreciation awards were presented to the all-important benefactors, The Beare Foundation, The JAKAMaR Trust, The Lazarus Family Trust and the Victor Daitz Foundation. Their valued ongoing generous support is vital to the successful continuation of the work of the Chevra Kadisha. As an extra special treat guests were mesmerized by the beautiful chazzanut of Elton Krawitz. Terry Levene, treasurer and stalwart of the Chevra Kadisha was awarded honorary life membership, in acknowledgment of his exceptional service. In appreciation of the outstanding dedication of the men and women of the DUHC Chevra Kadisha a plaque that has since been mounted in the Redhill Cemetery Ohel was unveiled. This pays tribute to all the dedicated men and women of the DUHC Chevra Kadisha. On this milestone occasion of 125 years of service, we pray that Hshem bless the Chevra Kadisha for their holy work and give them the strength to continue this sacred service to the community.
