As we spend hours each day in the accelerated media landscape of the Internet, the COVID-19 pandemic has seemingly slowed down the pace of the day-to-day. The pandemic has shifted our sense of the past – pre-pandemic time seems years behind us, and our new memories of the pandemic take place almost exclusively in the same indoor space. The last nine months blend and blur together. Artistically and politically, people are increasingly looking to the past as a source of inspiration. From current uprisings evoking imagery from the Black Panthers to the revival of the Y2K aesthetic, we are warping through time and space. We wonder, how has history been warped to benefit the few? How have technology and capitalism warped social relations? Photography, too, enacts a sort of warp in translating 3D reality to 2D images. A photographer does not simply capture truth – instead they take it in, transform it, and return something new and unique. As photographers, we embrace the warp as it shapes our past and present. We use it to imagine the future.
