HARVARD ALUMNI IN HEALTHCARE 2021-2022

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear members, colleagues, and friends,

I hope that this message finds you safe and healthy. I am excited to address our community in our inaugural annual report detailing HAIH’s activity throughout 2022. As we wrap up the year, I am filled with joy, pride, and optimism about our organization’s progress. We provided more opportunities for meaningful engagement through a 4-fold increase in program offerings, created additional sources for connection such as through a membership directory, and successfully transitioned into a non-profit organization to amplify our impact in our alumni community. One program that I particularly enjoyed coordinating this past year was a conversation about lifestyle medicine and cancer with Dr. Elizabeth O’Donnell. Like many attendees, I found it to be a great learning experience and novel exposure to a new field of study Such events that spark curiosity and serve as a learning platform represent core aspirations we strive to achieve for our members.

We also hosted a record number of inperson events in 2022 As we transition to a new normal with an increasing emphasis on in-person events, we will strive to create more spaces for our members to bring their connections off the screen In the year ahead, we will also aim to offer a greater diversity of programming and grow our connections to the greater Harvard community.

None of this progress would have been possible without our dedicated leadership team and committee members. Thank you for the time and energy you put into shaping our organization.

I would also like to thank our community members for their continued engagement in our programs.

Wishing you a happy and healthy new year, and looking forward to seeing you soon

HARVARD COLLEGE LOW-INCOME VISIBILITY WEEK SERIES

Throughout October and November of 2022, HAIH partnered with the Harvard University Office of Career Services (OCS) for a series of events focused on empowering pre-health students, particularly those who identify as firstgeneration low-income (FGLI). These events were part of Harvard College’s LowIncome Visibility Week, but open to all members of the Harvard community.

HAIH and OCS hosted four events (3 in-person, 1 zoom) for this series, three of which are highlighted as follows.

CAREERS IN HEALTH LIGHTNING TALK ACADEMIC CLINICAL MEDICINE

On November 10, 2022, we invited seven incredible Harvard alumni who are now practicing as physicians in the greater Boston area to share their academic clinical medicine experiences with current pre-health students at the Office of Career Services.

LEARNING HOW TO ‘FLY’ WITH DR. KWAN KEW LAI

On November 7, 2022, Kwan Kew Lai MD DMD ‘77 SPH ‘77 presented her newest book, The Girl Who Taught Herself to Fly, which was released this past fall. The book is a memoir tracing her heartwarming, poignant, and powerful story of overcoming poverty and sexism to be the incredible writer, physician, and medical volunteer she is today. Dr. Lai read a brief excerpt from the book, then joined a conversation and open audience Q&A moderated by Felicia Ho AB ‘23 and Lisa Wong MD ‘79.

For this book talk, in addition to partnering with the Office of Career Services, HAIH also worked with the Arts & Humanities Institute at Harvard Medical School and the Medical Humanities Forum student group at Harvard College.

We had around 30 attendees on Zoom for this event with over 80+ registered. For those who were not able to attend, the recording can be found here (https://harvard.zoom.us/rec/share/6Wnq7dfEpNUHbWeQbNB4RvQCfsvBrjL2d2gHQ21iKx9B-bABicJ0AOF3d-4cjOR.kxwT5uvkdi d3QmV).

NAVIGATING PRE-MED LIFE AS AN FGLI STUDENT

On October 14, 2022, we hosted a panel on Navigating Pre-Med Life as an FGLI student, featuring Iqra Noor AB ‘23 and Sadia Laisa AB ‘23, with the conversation moderated by Esha Ahmad AB ‘25 (pictured left) Thank you to both students for being so open and vulnerable with sharing their stories and experiences as a pre-med at Harvard, and thank you to our respectful student audience who asked great questions!

We had around 15 attendees, and students also learned about our HAIH All-In Mentorship Program. Now in its second year, this program is a pre-health 1-1 mentorship developed especially for those who identify as underrepresented in medicine, FGLI, non-science concentrator, or first in their family to enter medicine. You can learn more about this program here (https://harvardalumnihealthcare.com/about-aim).

2022 HAA BOARD ELECTION CONVERSATIONS

On April 27 and 30, 2021, HAIH hosted two zoom sessions with alumni in healthcare running for the Harvard Board. We featured their bios on our website. Stanley Shaw AB '87 MD PhD '95 moderated the conversations, with Setu Mehta AB '21 serving as the technical host for the April 27th meeting and Felicia Ho AB '23 serving as the technical host on the 30th. The candidates were asked 2-3 technical questions about their viewpoints and vision, and then were asked more general questions about their alumni life. We had 26 registrants, with 6 and 12 attendees on the 27 and 30th, respectively. The recordings are available on our website. We then broadly shared the recordings with our community

The event was well received by the panelists, as they appreciated the engagement with their platforms. Many of them went on to win the elections.

FROM MEXICALI TO MAYO CLINIC: A DISCUSSION WITH DR. ALFREDO QUIÑONES-HINOJOSA

On February 16, 2021, HAIH, Harvard Latino Alumni Alliance (HLAA), and Harvardwood hosted a screening of the Netflix/BBC docuseries, The Surgeon’s Cut, featuring Alfredo QuiñonesHinojosa MD '98 (Dr. Q). Following the screening, moderators Stanley Shaw AB '87 MD PhD '95 (Vice President of HAIH) and Jacob Barrera MPH '18 (Co-President of HLAA) interviewed and spoke with Dr. Quiñones-Hinojosa about his life experiences and writing his book, Becoming Dr. Q: My Journey from Migrant Farm Worker to Brain Surgeon

We then opened up the floor to a brief Q&A. After the event, 10 attendees were randomly selected to win a signed copy of Dr. Q’s book.

Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa MD ‘98 is the William J. and Charles H. Mayo Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurologic Surgery at Mayo Clinic’s campus in Florida He leads a team of researchers at the Brain Tumor Stem Cell Research Laboratory at Mayo Clinic Florida to find a cure for brain cancer. Dr. Q’s work as a surgeon was recently featured in the Emmy award-winning Netflix/BBC docuseries, The Surgeon’s Cut, released in 2020.

We were excited to see over 100 attendees at the event, and we have shared the link to the recording on our website for those who were not able to attend (password: y9=bY64G).

HAIH REPORT 2021-2022

NEW INITIATIVES

This past academic year has been an amazing year of growth for HAIH In the summer of 2021, the first HAIH committees were formed by Felicia Ho AB '23, creating structure and boosting engagement for those members specifically interested in events coordination, inter-School and inter-SIG relations, the inaugural All-In Mentorship Program, and the People of HAIH interviewing feature series Since then, these committees have launched many of their own initiatives and events, including the All-In Mentorship Program and many People of HAIH interviews, which will be highlighted in the following pages. To further boost community engagement, the Executive Board has pursued other projects, like the creation of the HAIH Directory.

EVENT CALENDAR

We created the first ever events tracker and metrics measurement tool to analyze the reach of our events.

ALL-IN MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

Founded in the summer of 2021 by Dr. Paul Rufo AB ‘85 (HAIH Board Member) and Dr. Diana Hurwitz AB ‘87 with Felicia Ho AB '23, the All-In Mentorship (AIM) program connects HAIH with Harvard College students who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine. Our name, the “All-In” Mentorship program, recognizes her commitment to especially support and encourage students from first-generation low-income or underrepresented minority backgrounds, those without family members in medicine, and non-science concentrators as they embark on their pre-medical careers.

In its first year, the All-In Mentorship Program connected 35 undergraduates with alumni mentors and hosted two events a speaker event featuring culinary medicine pioneer Dr. John La Puma sharing his career path to medicine and a mentorship panel moderated by Felicia Ho AB ‘23 (HAIH Communications Director) featuring Dr. Jonathan Cohen AB ‘86 MD ‘90 (HAIH Board Member), Dr. Chris Min AB ‘89 MD PhD, Setu Mehta AB ‘21 (President of HAIH), and Sunny Tang AB ‘24

REPORT
HAIH
2021-2022

ALL-IN MENTORSHIP PROGRAM, CONT.

We conducted a post-program survey gathering responses from mentors and mentees and found the reviews to be mostly positive. Mentees joined the program identifying most often as first-generation students or first in their family to go into medicine. More than 60% of respondents reported being able to regularly keep in touch with their assigned mentor/mentee, and most mentors and mentees met on a monthly or fewer basis over video call. Many appreciated the regularity of the email check-ins from the All-In Mentorship Program committee, and mentees look forward to either being rematched with a mentor or continuing in the program with their current mentor.

We hope to further consider and analyze this valuable feedback about our pilot year program as we are now running our 2022-2023 program.

HAIH DIRECTORY

The HAIH Directory was created as a database for members of HAIH to connect with each other on a more personal level and reach out to colleagues and potential mentors with similar or different interests. While we hope to design a more engaging platform in the future, this directory is a live, continuously updated Google Sheet listing names, contact information, Harvard affiliation, and interests (general and mentorship) that is secure and only accessible to HAIH mailing list members. Those who wish to be added to the directory may fill out this linked google form, and they will be added into the spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1nRvNDOYlT6A9N716N3Tywd6tYWoBR BRQDW-br0FhVQk/edit?usp=sharing)

Already, this HAIH Directory has been well-used by many Harvard pre-medical undergraduates, as it has been shared with the Pre-Medical Team at the Harvard Office of Career Services. We encourage HAIH members to sign up and join the directory

HAIH REPORT 2021-2022

PEOPLE OF HAIH

People of HAIH is a spotlight series featuring members of the HAIH community from diverse backgrounds, fields, interests, professions, and more It was started in December 2020 by Felicia Ho AB '23 (HAIH Communications Director) to boost community engagement, and it has since grown to over 40 interviews with a robust interviewing team of undergraduates and career professionals. All of the inspiring, thought-provoking interviews are available to read on our website and have been featured in our Facebook group Should you be interested in being connected with any of these featured members, we encourage you to use the Harvard Alumni Directory (Harvard Key required). The following interviews are just a sampling of the conversations we have had thus far

If you would like to be featured in this series, please email fho@college.harvard.edu. It would be a pleasure to share your story with others!

JUDITH EDERSHEIM JD ‘85 MD ‘85

I’m Judith Edersheim, a physician and an attorney I practice forensic psychiatry I cofounded and co-direct the Center for Law, Brain, and Behavior at Mass General Hospital.

What drew you to law?

Law is a beautiful way of structuring your thoughts Legal arguments are careful, wellresearched, thoughtful, historically grounded, and serve important social functions. The appeal of that kind of thinking really drew me, and I also wanted to do good and you can do a lot of good in law. I loved law school, too. The training of law school is something you can never undo. It’s a bit like imprinting a little duckling you can never unthink like a lawyer. That’s a warning! Once a lawyer, always a lawyer.

What drew you to medicine?

The feeling that I wanted to help right now. That being said, that goal has shifted a bit over time as I chose psychiatry as my specialty. Psychiatry is often about helping someone help themselves It’s about providing a scaffolding so they can discover their strengths and see what’s holding them back, what’s interfering. It isn’t a specialty, then, where you can just fix things, like in orthopedics. It’s a specialty where you support, accompany, and inspire insights, but you have to sit with your feelings and maintain your boundaries Still, it is the greatest privilege to be involved in someone’s life at that level and to be able to help with the skills you have.

HAIH REPORT 2021-2022

KEE B PARK MD MPH ‘19

I’m Kee Park. I’m the Director of Policy and Advocacy at the Program of Global Surgery and Social Change, a program embedded in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School Our vision is universal access to surgical care. I also lead the Global Neurosurgery Initiative Team within the program, where we train future leaders in Global Neurosurgery and conduct research into the global public health dimension of neurosurgery. Finally, I’m the Director of the Korea Health Policy Project I’ve been to North Korea over 20 times and have a North Korean license to practice medicine. I not only work alongside North Korean doctors, but I also have a lab where we study health in North Korea and the role of geopolitical factors that impact the health of North Korean people. Those are the three main hats that I wear.

We know healthcare is important, but there are so many other factors that could negatively or positively affect the population’s health. For example, in North Korea, the fact that there is an unfinished war has huge implications as far as resources for the country to support healthcare and other social benefits for the population. As such, we look closely at current geopolitical factors [in my lab]; for instance, we examine the international sanctions that have been placed on North Korea as a result of their nuclear weapons and ballistic missile technology development Though it is explicitly stated that sanctions are not intended to harm the North Korean people, it is clear that they do Our philosophy is that we should never place innocent people especially women and children at risk in the name of national security. [We identify] potential entry points for international actors from South Korea, the United States, and other countries for whom it makes sense to engage in cooperative projects with North Korea Prepandemic, North Korea was prioritizing surgical care, so it makes sense for external actors to partner with North Korea on surgical system strengthening. But right now, protecting its people from the pandemic is their top priority.

HAIH REPORT 2021-2022

JEAN JUNIOR AB ‘09 MD ‘16

How do you deal with the struggle that structural inequities are often big and difficult to resolve?

I get very specific and concrete. For me, the way to try to maximize impact is to work in a setting that has the greatest need for pediatricians. When I finished residency, I spent a year working on the Pine Ridge Reservation in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, with the Indian Health Service There was just a need for a pediatrician there, so I felt that was a way to try to maximize my impact. This was a major reason I decided to do my fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine, even if it would add three additional years to my training, which is not trivial at this stage when you’ve already finished residency. I really wanted to hone my critical care skills, acute care skills, so I could care for the most seriously ill and injured kids then.

With this fellowship experience, I could be in a better position to competently deliver care in the US and other resource care settings where there’s not a pediatric ICU doctor or pediatric anesthesiologist right there. In a place like Pine Ridge Reservation, the closest PICU is hours away so you have to figure out a way to deal with the kid in front of you. Having these critical care skills is a benefit because, in care settings lacking resources, which are often abroad, there’s just no one to back you up sometimes. It’s a very difficult thing when you feel like you weren’t able to do all that you could for a patient for any reason, so having that extra skill set was crucial for me to commit to this fellowship.

The other aspect of my career is working on making structural changes. This is just as important, and I like to say that if I could wave a magic wand and completely resolve poverty, injustice, political disenfranchisement, and all these other huge structural determinants of health, but the tradeoff is that I would never be able to practice medicine another day in my life or touch another patient, I would choose that in a heartbeat and leave medicine behind forever. But I can’t do that, at least at this point.

The number of ways you can make a difference are certainly endless you can become a state or city public health official so when you’re trying to change the rules of the game, in addition to giving donations, there is always something you can do to make concrete change.
