CHOOSING SUBJECTS

It is not unusual for a student to not know what subjects they want to study at A level and beyond.

Be assured that we will guide you and help you to make the right choices for you but here are some key pointers that will start you thinking:

Chose subjects that you are genuinely interested in Think of the subjects that you enjoy currently at school, or those that you have read about and sound interesting even though they are new Think about your interests outside of school Talk to your subject teachers and to your parents – their previous experiences and insights will help guide you Make an appointment to see the Careers Counsellor Mrs Sheedy Make use of Unifrog to further research courses and careers

If you do have a clear career pathway and university course in mind,

Chose subjects that are a requirement for the course you wish to study, making sure you have the right subjects Do not exclude non-essential additional subjects to show breadth and diversity Make use of Unifrog to further research the requirements for specific courses in specific universities

As examples, for Medicine, you will need to study chemistry and biology and one from mathematics and physics and for English, English literature will be a required A level.

In the case of Medicine, a fourth A level in a creative subject such as music or art or a language will set you apart during the application process and for English, additional facilitating subjects such as history, the arts and languages will give a good balance.
