ith the vast network of torrent sites, SoulSeek and more, why should a budgetconscious student invest in records? The New Haven music scene is one that’s built on a thriving network of independent cultural producers, all of whom are united under a bootstrapping, DIY mentality — one that extends beyond Iron Hand 7", "Liquid Assets", from Safety Meeting Records shows and into record stores. If you’re looking to get involved with the local scene, start with not just going to shows, but buying records. Safety Meeting Records (safetymeetingrecords.com) founder and “el jefe” Carlos Wells says he got into putting out records for that very reason, “When I was a kid, one of the reasons why I really liked going to shows was to buy records.” Now Wells puts out an average of five to six records every year. The most recent is Mick Barr’s Coiled Malescence, the sleeves of which are letterpressed by New Haven’s own Dexterity Press (dexteritypress.com). (Dexterity operates a Universal Vandercook II letterpress, dating from 1934.) The majority of Safety Meeting releases take the form of 12” LP’s accompanied by CDs. But some bands decide to start their own record labels. According to Rick Omonte of the Mountain Movers (formerly on Safety Meeting Records), “a few things kind of edged us to do our own records. Mostly feeling that we could do it ourselves and that we had complete control. For bands at our level, it kind of makes sense.” The Mountain Movers’ label, Car Crash Avoiders (carcrashavoiders.tumblr.com), may eventually release related side projects, but for right now, it’s focused on releasing records, tapes, and tote bags, solely by the Movers. One recent release is Apple Mountain, which tells the story of two lovers that are separated during an unexpected blizzard — not just through song, but in the accompanying liner notes, illustrated with watercolors by band member Dan Greene. Meanwhile, in between releases for Estrogen Highs, Iron Hand, Sudden Walks, and more, musician Stefan Christensen’s effacingly-named Never Heard of It Records (myspace.com/ neverheardofitrecords) turned out Judge’s Cave, a box set of cassette tapes by New Haven-based artists, also with an accompanying zine. Conceptual, narrative, and illustrated — three things that are tough to find when downloading singles from iTunes, or ripping them from your roomie’s laptop. ood theater is interactive, bringing the audience away from reality and into a story. New Haven’s Lyric Hall Showcase, the area’s newest venue for live theater, is all about doing that -- in creative, unique, and often sitespecific ways. The building, located at 827 Whalley Ave., was originally built in 1913 as a vaudeville silent film house. Many renovations and uses (including a automobile repair shop) over the years left the building in disrepair before 2006. That’s when current owner John Cavaliere stumbled upon it. The man behind the curtain: Since then, Cavaliere Lyric Hall’s John Cavaliere. has renovated the building extensively -- furnishing it with antiques, and furbishing it with custom gilt work. Cavaliere says, “the details you may not notice consciously, but subconsciously the details invoke you with the time, feeling and character of vaudeville.” This feeling is most evident at Lyric Hall’s monthly (and often sold out) screening of silent films accompanied by original scores. “When you’re sitting there watching the films with the live musicians playing, you realize that this is surround sound at its best,” Cavaliere says, adding that “Lyric Hall Showcase is a theater that is theatrical all on its own.” In addition to the monthly silent screenings there’s Groove Haven, a dance party featuring live music, guest DJ’s and an interactive lightshow. Upcoming events include a burlesque show called TIKKI-AGO-GO on September 10 with performances by local surf-music all-stars The Clams. There’s also Forgot to Laugh Sideshow and Animation Festival, presenting vaudevillian performances like fire-juggling and sword-eating during the weekend of October 23. On October 27 to the 31, the play Irma Vep will be performed. The types of performances at Lyric Hall Showcase change just as quickly as its antique furnishings do. “The building speaks to me and I listen; when theatergoers come here they will most likely bring something new with each visit,” Cavaliere says. — Luke Hammerman

ew Haven’s a college town, filled with college students on college student budgets. Fortunately, it’s also filled with plenty of budget-friendly options. There are sale racks and discounted downtown shopping nights, thrift stores and dollar stores, big box stores and IKEA. And then there are the city’s open air markets. Traders’ Market, located at 86 Fitch Street, opened over the summer. Since opening, the market CitySeed’s downtown farmers market. has been doing well for itself. “It is growing and getting busier everyday,” Alyssa DiSpazio (a co-owner of Traders’ Market) says. Traders’ Market has an indoor and outdoor facility, so it runs all year round, Friday to Sunday. The market urges shoppers to “shop, swap and save,” just for the fun of it. The variety of items is large, selling lots of antiques, jewelry, clothing and collectibles. DiSpazio explains that customers can trade items with vendors. Haggling is allowed, but you may not be able to cut a deal. “It’s all up to the vendors,” DiSpazio says. Traders’ Market is also family-oriented. “We offer free popcorn, free admission and free parking,” she said. “Also, we do our best to keep out illegal items and knock-offs.” All-ages venue The Space operates a vintage clothing store on-site year round, but they host a flea market about four times a year. Vendors sell vintage clothing, records, cassettes, and more — “anything from staple flea market regulars to somebody selling vegan brownies,”owner Steve Rodgers says. Each market hosts between 30 and 40 vendors, sometimes with live music. And over-21 shoppers not interested in vegan brownies can partake in beers and barbecue at The Space’s sister venue, The Outer Space. The next two markets are September 23 and October 8. f you’re jonesing for an art fix, the months of October and November are sure to satisfy your craving. From October 12 to 30, for three consecutive weekends, New Haven itself becomes an exhibition space as part of Artspace’s 14th Annual City-Wide Open Studios. Local artists participating in the month-long visual arts festival welcome visitors to their studios in New Haven, West Haven, North Haven and Hamden. Other hot spots include Erector Square (the former Erector set factory), and the Alternative Space, an empty building for temporary installations. Some new features this year include an iPhone urban search app, which will allow registered artists to post updates to their studio information, and visitors to download CWOS maps, a special passport for studio visitors to use and fill during the middle weekend, making them eligible to win a specially commissioned print, and a private closing celebration party at the Yale University Art Gallery. Overall, “We’re trying to do some performances, and more activities in the studios,” says Executive Director Helen Kauder. In November, Artspace hosts an exhibition, organized by New York-based guest curator Rachel Gugelberger and funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts called Library Science. The title and premise of Library Science derive partly from conceptual artist Eleanor Antin’s 1972 work in which “pieces of information” describing women artists were catalogued by the Library of Congress classification system and subject headings. The show also finds inspiration in the field of library and information science, which investigates library resource usage, human interaction with library systems, and information organization. Library Science extends beyond the gallery in New Haven’s Ninth Square: Connecticut artists will display work commissioned specifically for the show in libraries within walking distance, like the Institute Library, Beinecke Rare Books & Manuscripts and Haas Arts Libraries, which house great visual resources. “We wanted artists to be able to have an opportunity to really establish connections with librarians,” says Kauder of what she considers the “living, transformative aspect” of Gugelberger’s show. “Artists often don’t necessarily have the easiest time to find resource materials.” Locals don’t always know what’s available to them either. As a part of the Library Science exhibition, Artspace plans to arrange a walking tour from library to library, which Kauder hopes will open these institutions up to the public. —Nicole Levy

iking is by far the smarter, cheaper and healthier way to get around New Haven. “All students should bike, because New Haven is the perfect city for biking,” David Streever, a cycling enthusiast on the board of Elm City Cycling, says. “New Haven is a relatively flat city with a layout that is centralized. Most destinations are close to each other.” Elm City Cycling is a nonprofit organization with more than 400 advocates who work at making New Haven more accessible and safer for cyclists. They hold monthly public meetings on the second Monday of every month. “It’s a great group full of friendly and helpful people, which makes it the place for newcomers to the city,” Streever says. More than just an advocacy organization, Elm City Cycling leads large group rides throughout the year. “We do group rides designed for people of all levels and abilities so everyone can experience the city in a different way,” Streever said. Elm City Cycling’s website (www.elmcitycycling.org) has a calendar with upcoming rides and meetings. Elm City Cycling and Devil’s Gear Bike Shop organize the New Haven Century, a 100 mile bike ride through New Haven County. Usually held in June, it’s been moved to the end of September this year. “We wanted everyone who wants to participate to be able to. In the summer many people (such as students) aren’t here,” Streever says. In October, Elm City Cycling and Devil’s Gear team up again for Artspace’s annual City-Wide Open Studios. They’ll offer guided bike tours to artists’ studios, allowing cyclists of all levels to experience New Haven’s vibrant arts scene. More than just books: The Institute Library.

Check It Out

ew Haven is a city rife with libraries, but there’s more to a library than just checking out books. This fall, why not take advantage of all the things they have to offer? On display until October 1 at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library (121 Wall St., New Haven; 203-432-2977, library.yale.edu/beinecke) are selections from the library’s collection of American literature, and from its collection of children’s literature. Highlights in an exhibition titled Multitudes: A Celebration of the Yale Collection of American Literature, 1911-2011 reveals the collection’s strengths and its development in the last century. How Is a Book…Written? Illustrated? Printed? Bound? shows its audience, using excerpts from Ingri and Edgar Parin d’Aulaire’s Book of Greek Myths, the evolution a pre-digital book undergoes from idea to ink-on-paper. Across the New Haven Green, the Institute Library (847 Chapel St., New Haven; 203-562-4045, institutelibrary.org) hosts a book sale and open house in late September. The book sale (an effort to fund the library’s renovations) will feature donated books and books from the library’s collection, according to Executive Director William Baker. Tours of the library’s facilities will be offered to nonmembers. In October, the library will celebrate the re-opening of its third floor, replete with new space for reading, study, art exhibitions and lectures. In November, the building will accommodate a showing of photographs by Meredith Miller and Rob Rocke, as a part of the citywide Library Science exhibition coordinated by neighboring non-profit Artspace. he boom box may be an artifact of yesteryear, but online radio is alive and kicking. Across the board, college radio stations in Connecticut are streaming their broadcasts online. That includes stations rated the best by Advocate readers this May: University of New Haven’s WHNU 88.7 FM streams at wnhu.net, Quinnipiac University’s WQUN 1220 AM at wqun.com and Southern Connecticut State University’s WSIN 1590 AM at radio.southernct.edu. It was, in fact, a college radio station, University of Chapel Hill’s WXYC 89.3 FM, that pioneered the rebroadcasting of its on-air signal live over the Internet. Since 1994, WXYC has had listeners from all over the world contact the station with comments and requests via e-mail and instant messaging. For these listeners, the appeal of online radio — distributed via streaming in audio formats like mp3 and Windows Media Audio — is variety. Four years ago, Yale University took the online arrangement a step farther, launching WYBCX, an Internet-only, free-form radio station intended to reach radio-less students and provide a nurturing launch pad for DJs-in-training. Yale shifted all student and community programming to the station two years later. This upcoming school year, “We’re also going to be doing some minor redesigns for our website wybcx.com so that it’ll be easier and more appealing for listeners,” General Manager Carl Chen, a rising junior at Yale, says. Aiming to “bak[e] the magic back into magic radio cake,” WYBCX will “continue to broadcast various genres and talk shows in accordance with [its] freeform broadcast philosophy,” promises Chen, as well as cover “every football and hockey game and many other sports.” —Nicole Levy NICOLE LEVY PHOTO

n this town, dogs inspire controversy. Just last month, Conte West Hills Magnet School on Chapel Street closed the gates of its sports field to dog walkers who had exercised their animals there and failed to pick up after them. At the time, some dog owners contested the charge that they had disregarded “curb your dog” signs posted in the lot; more significantly, they lamented a shortage of public spaces where their pets could run free. In most city parks, like Edgerton and Edgewood, laws require owners to walk dogs on their leashes. If the New Haven police catch a dog off-leash at Edgerton, its owner can be fined $92. “Police will not distinguish between dogs that pose a threat to people and dogs that are well-behaved and harmless,” reads a sign that the Edgerton Park Conservatory has posted at the park’s entrance. In their letter to the New Haven Register, Conservatory President Veronica Tomasic and Treasurer Margaret Devane wrote: “Too many dog walkers continue to let their dogs run through the park off-leash,” despite the Conservatory’s efforts to enforce leash laws. “Barking, leaping dogs can frighten children and adults; they pose a safety threat to everyone, and they disturb the tranquility of the park.” So where should dog owners go if they are looking for a place to let Fido loose? There are two dog parks in New Haven: the Yale Divinity School Dog Park on St. Ronan St. and the Edgewood Park Dog Run on Edgewood Ave. The St. Ronan St. Park, open weekdays from 6:30 a.m.- 8 p.m. and on weekends from 8 a.m.- 9 p.m., is a sheltered if not very grassy space. The park offers shade, sun and two benches for humans. Although the park sits on land owned by Yale, that land is surrounded by residential property, and neighbors periodically protest the incessant barking. In February 2006, the Yale Divinity School almost closed the park permanently, but negotiations between park regulars and neighborhood complainants saved the park for owners and dogs willing to adhere to a new “no-bark” policy. Has it worked? A neighbor walking a longhaired dachshund and a mammoth sheep dog says this: “It’s quite noisy if you sit out on the patio.” Further away from residential neighborhoods, Edgewood Park Dog Run may be a safer choice for dog owners who would prefer to avoid controversy. Other dog parks further afield include the Hamden dog run at Bassett Park (with a special section for small dogs!), located at the intersection of Ridge Road and Waite St.; the Branford dog park on Shore Road; the Branford Trolley Trail, which spans between Tilcon Road and Thimble Islands Road; and Young’s Pond in Branford at Blackstone Ave. and Pine Orchard Road. —Nicole Levy

Richard believes it’s the humor that distinguishes gay hiking from its straight counterpart: “We saw salamanders one time, and we thought about Like regular hiking, but gayer. what if we saw snakes,” he recalls. “The guys would scream and run in the other direction.” The LGBTQ hikers of this state first assembled at the foot of Sleeping Giant in 2010, after long-time hiking enthusiast and nursing instructor Rocky shared his proposal for a new community activity with receptive leaders of the New Haven Pride Center and New Haven Mix and Mingle gay social organization. The Pride Center promoted the new group on its website, Mix and Mingle spread the word to its mailing list, and, in only a year, with an intermission for the winter months, CT Pride Hikers has welcomed as many as 40 participants on the group’s monthly excursions. CT Pride Hikers charges nothing for membership, and attracts couples and women. Hikes and trails are usually of an intermediate level with some elevation, but nothing beyond that level of difficulty. Although Rocky considers Sleeping Giant the CT Pride Hikers’ “home base,” because it still attracts the largest turnout, all of Connecticut has been fair game for the hikers’ boots: That includes part of the Appalachian Trail in Litchfield County, East Rock Park in New Haven and Steep Rock Reservation in Washington Depot. Bad weather has never stopped the CT Pride Hikers. “We do not postpone for light or intermittent rain,” reads their blog. “Instead, we have a wet T-shirt contest when we reach the peak.” The group’s network is always expanding says Rocky, who prefers not to reveal his real name because he thinks it is wiser not to “scream” about his sexuality. “This week, True Colors,” a nonprofit organization supporting LGBTQ youth, “contacted me and asked if mentors could come with some of the DCF teenagers.” He is all for a larger network, as long as mentors take full responsibility for the teens, because as Rocky insists, “there’s risks to any outdoor activity.” Rocky has acknowledged that there have been scrapes and falls along the way, but he has “met people on hikes that you never meet anywhere else because a lot of them are not bar people.
