The Light Institute An international school of photography in Richmond, Yorkshire, the Light Institute presents a new public milieu for the site, merely a stones throw from the historic market square and overlooking castle keep. Using light as the driving force to differentiate the internal spaces of the school, a variety of spaces were created, each with a different sense of atmosphere.

By exploring Richmond from a desaturated photographic perspective, it allowed us to focus on elements of the rural town that would often be wholeheartedly overlooked.

10

Removing the colour from each of these situations draws a greater attention to detail involving the relationship between light and matter, the way in which light reflects off of leaves, or the tapestry of shadow caused by light striking a brick wall.

Thinking Through Making ‘Thinking Through Making’ Week provided us with an opportunity to try our hand at modelling methods that we may have never previously used. Working with plaster casting, we were able to use a variety of materials to coat/mould with in order to create a multitude of different textures on the surface of the casts.

Time Capsule Sanctuary In 1972 during alterations to the Trinity Church tower, a sealed lead box was discovered, inscribed with instructions to be opened in 1999. The box was opened, and the time capsule can now be seen in the Richmondshire Museum. A new box was placed in 2002 with instructions to be opened in 2090. The Sanctuary aims to create a flexible-use community space with the ability to house and exhibit past and future time capsules.

Charrette Week Collaborating with students from stages 1 & 2, we set out to ‘reinvent the standard brick.’ As a group we chose to create a concept of DIY bricks, providing a mould for casting your own bricks which slot together in order to form a wall.
