Favel Parrett on memories that turn into our most important stories I know about kindness because of my grandma and granddad. When we were very young, my brother and I spent a lot of time with them in their little 1940s flat on the second floor. When I think of the word home, I think of that flat. I have often wanted to go and find that flat, to see if it is still there - white walls

and large windows, with a little garage underneath. It was warm and comfortable. It always smelled of roasted pork or biscuits or frying butter. It had a large lounge room and a connected dining room with folding glass doors. The kitchen was small but always alive, always the best room to be in. We would spend hours in there helping grandma cook.

There Was Still Love Favel Parrett Paperback $29.99

In There Was Still Love, Favel Parrett weaves her literary magic again, taking us between Prague and Melbourne as we fall into the fragments of a family separated by war and circumstance. Beloved by booksellers. Limited signed copies available.

My grandparents were working class and there was never any spare money no matter how much they budgeted or tried to save. They never took us to the movies or out for lunch, and Christmas presents were usually something small and useful. But there was always enough food. There was always enough time and love. My Grandmother was from Czechoslovakia, and even though she was forced to leave when she was a teenager, I don’t think her soul ever really left home. She was completely Czech for the whole time I knew her. It was there in the way she dressed, in her accent that never softened. It was there in her cheekbones, sharp and angular and proud. Sometimes I feel that my grandparent’s flat was really in Prague. My novel, There Was Still Love, is mostly fiction, but some of it is based on remembered things – important things that have shaped me as a person. I hope you enjoy reading.

Crossing to Safety Wallace Stegner Stegner’s classic, written in his late 70s, on the lifelong friendship between two couples. One of my all-time favourite books. The Spare Room Helen Garner I love this possibly

A fun and reflective game of timelines, trivia and risk. How well do you know the past? Recommended for 14+ years and 3+ players.

Archie Roach on telling his life story I have long been on a journey that started with a letter from my loving sister Myrtle, telling me of a family I didn’t know I had, and of a life that had been taken from me. When I learned at 14 that both my mother and father were dead, and found out about brothers and sisters that matched uncertain echoes in my mind, my world quickly

unraveled. It sparked not only a search to find out who I was, but a love of writing songs that have helped heal me from past traumas. I have sung my story and the story of my Aboriginal brothers and sisters, revealing not only our suffering and pain but the resilience of our spirit, and I have shared these stories with audiences right around

the world. I now know that at the epicentre of everything, at the heart of humanity, is love. My story charts my individual course towards love, but story belongs to everyone. We are all story, we all have story. People come, people go, but story remains.

has a swing attached to a tree that leans out over a sheltered cove, and if the tide is right, your toes touch the water. It’s very peaceful. And have you ever watched soldier crabs? Dozens of them all march together on the sand flats until they see you, then they all quickly spiral dig into the soft sand and now, they’re gone. It’s also important that you don’t ruin the day by going home with a sunburn. When I was young, in the time before we

knew how strong the sunlight was, going to the beach meant I would stay as long as I could in the hottest part of the day, then go home, cooked. But now, a beach visit means a big hat, sunscreen and maybe one of those pop out cabana shade tents. And of course, beaches are more fun when you’re with family and friends. I’d sure feel a bit silly, digging a huge sandcastle, throwing a Frisbee or a beach ball if I was just by myself!

Sami Bayly on what drew her to natural history As a young girl, I grew up on a small property that was always filled with a range of plants and animals. Some of which were pets, such as dogs, rabbits, miniature ponies and donkeys, while others were a little further out of our control, such as snakes in the garden, possums in the tree and the frequent huntsman on the wall.

My mother also had a love for creating, and was always doing larger-thanlife portraits of our pets to decorate the home, something which always inspired me. It was the constant exposure to nature and art which I believe led me on my path to natural history illustration.
