HARRISMITH | CORNÉ VAN NOORDWYK ‘n Provinsiale speurder van Georganiseerde Misdaad, Kaptein Alfons Kokonyana, van die Thabo Mofutsanyana Distrik hier in Phuthaditjhaba saam met Harrismith Crime Prevention het twee verdagtes suksesvol by Christina Farm gearresteer ná ‘n onlangse huisroof wat op 'n plaas naby Harrismith plaasgevind het, waarin 'n 77-jarige pensioenaris aangeval is, maar nie beseer nie. Hulle het die slagoffer van drank beroof. Daar word beweer dat die 77-jarige vrou op Dinsdag 11 Januarie 2022 omstreeks 16:15 die middag op haar plaas was toe sy die water buite die huis hoor loop het, sy het gaan ondersoek instel en gevind dat dit 'n geiser is en het terug in die huis na haar slaapkamer gestap. Sy het weer uit die slaapkamer gekom en is verras deur 'n verdagte wat 'n mes by hom gehad het. Hy het toe vuurwapens en kontant van haar geëis. Die verdagte het na bewering haar van drank beroof en toe op vlug geslaan. Volgens die slagoffer moes hy toegang deur die venster gekry het. ’n Saak van huisroof is deur die polisie ondersoek en twee verdagtes van 22 jaar oud van Christina Farm-distrik Harrismith is saam met 'n mes in hulle besit gevind. Hulle het ook die drank, 'n sak en 'n beursie wat aan

die klaer behoort in hulle besit gevind.

Hulle is aangekla van huisroof en die besit van 'n gevaarlike wapen en het op Vrydag, 14 Januarie 2022 voor die Harrismith-landdroshof verskyn. In nog 'n onlangse voorval op Sondag 16 Januarie 2022 het 4 terroriste 'n sekuriteitswag oorval en op 'n plaas naby Digby toegeslaan, ook hier in Harrismith. Die aanvallers was gewapen met 'n vuurwapen, 'n spies en 'n mes. Die aanvallers het die wagte vasgehou en op die winkel toegeslaan.

Hulle het gevlug met 'n aantal items, insluitend 'n sweismasjien, kragopwekker en gereedskap. Tydens hierdie aanval is die wagte nie beseer nie. “Dit was die tweede aanval die afgelope paar dae in hierdie gebied en die publiek word versoek om bedag en waaksaam te wees en hul veiligheid te probeer verbeter,” het die Provinsiale Kommissaris van Vrystaat, lt.-generaal Baile Motswenyane kort na die eerste aanval aan die media gesê. Hy loof die lede se uitstekende werk en toewyding aan hul werk om die aanvallers vas te trek en het gewaarborg dat geen steen onaangeroer gelaat sal word in sulke misdade nie en dat die polisie alles doen om seker te maak dat geregtigheid sal seëvier.

Three out on bail after huge dagga-bust HARRISMITH | CORNÉ VAN NOORDWYK The Harrismith Highway Patrol team have recently arrested three suspects from Ladysmith on the R74 Bergvile-Harrismith road. This is after searching their suspicious vehicle and finding them in possession of six bags containing dagga weighing 166 kilograms. On Sunday 16 January 2022 at about 16:00 the Harrismith Highway Patrol was on duty patrolling the R74 when they spotted a suspicious tinted windows silver Toyota Avanza with an FS registration. The vehicle was driving from Bergvile side towards R714. They stopped the vehicle and found three occupants inside with

large bags containing wrapped loose dagga weighing 166 kilograms with an estimated street value of more than R200 000. All three suspects were arrested and detained. It is alleged that the three suspects were headed to Welkom.

The dagga and vehicle have been seized as exhibits and proceeds of crime. Three suspects aged between 29 and 30 from Ladysmith, Kwazulu-Natal appeared before the Harrismith Magistrate Court on Tuesday 18 January 2022 for dealing in dagga and they were released on bail of R500 each.

Pragtige ‘alibino’-leeu van Harrismith word gebruik vir wêreldwye bewusmaking HARRISMITH | CORNÉ VAN NOORDWYK 'n Asemrowende withaarleeu met sy bos onberispelike maanhare het bewys dat hy beslis 'n toonaangewende aantrekkingskrag by 'n plaaslike wildreservaat is. Die prag-leeu is deur die wêreldbekende Amerikaanse fotograaf Simon Needham (55) verlede jaar by die Glen Garriff Lion Conservation hier in Harrismith afgeneem. Die asemrowende foto's het die witleeumannetjie in al sy glorie vasgevang terwyl hy in die bewaring rondgedwaal het. Een van verskeie beelde wys hoe die leeu met sy indrukwekkende maanhare op die grond lê, terwyl verskeie ander die dier in al sy glorie vasvang. Simon het oor dié spesifieke pragtige wit leeu gepraat en gesê: “Ek het hierdie beelde van ‘King Moya’ juis geneem om die Glen Garriff Lion Conservation op sosiale media te help bevorder! Wanneer ek foto’s neem wat ek weet sal help om die liefdadigheid waarvoor ek foto’s neem te ondersteun, is die genot wat ek daaruit put as ek die eindproduk sien, altyd vir my 'n ongelooflike lekker gevoel. Dit is baie moeilik om

mense aandag te trek, veral as dit kom by ‘n goeie saak, maar mens kan treffende visuele beelde gebruik om mense se aandag vinniger te kry. Alle bedreigde spesies en diere wat gered word uit toestande waarin hulle mishandel word, het ons hulp nodig, as ons wil hê dat hulle vir ons kinders en kleinkinders agtergelaat moet word. Dit is slegs met ons mensdom se volgehoue ondersteuning moontlik, om te verseker dat hierdie spesies van uitwissing gered kan word."

Alhoewel dit lyk asof die leeu ‘n albino's is, is wit leeus die produk van 'n seldsame kleurmutasie bekend as ‘leusisme’. Hierdie toestand veroorsaak 'n gedeeltelike verlies aan pigmentasie by diere, wat 'n kenmerkende wit voorkoms tot gevolg het. ‘Leusisme’ word gewoonlik veroorsaak deur 'n resessiewe geen, bekend as 'n kleurinhibeerder. Die eerste leeu is in 2002 aan die Glen Garriff Leeubewaring bekendgestel en nou het die organisasie meer as 70 leeus onder sy sorg.

"In die begin het God die hemel en die aarde geskep.

Die aarde was heeltemal onbewoonbaar, dit was donker op die diep waters, maar die Gees van God het oor die waters gesweef." (Gen. 1:1-2) Ek vind myself elke keer in verwondering as ek die Skeppingsverhale lees (ja daar is twee, in Genesis 1 en 2). Dit fassineer my nog my hele lewe lank en ek wens so ek kan eendag eerstehands by die Here die fyner detail hoor. Iets wat my opval is dat daar telkens, na elke skeppingsdag, geskryf staan: God het gesien dit is goed. Alles wat Hy geskep het, is goed, en dan lees ons die volgende in Gen. 1:31 : "Toe het God gekyk na alles wat Hy gemaak het, en dit was baie goed. Dit het aand geword en dit het môre geword. Dit was die sesde dag.“ Sien jy dit raak? Dit was BAIE goed. Alles is baie goed en dit sluit die mens in. Die natuur wat perfek in balans bly, die sterre en planete in die buitenste ruim wat vir altyd in ewewig bly. Die afstand van die maan en son na die aarde toe, is perfek geplaas om lewe moontlik te maak. Álles is baie goed. Die kos wat die Here vir die mens beskikbaar stel, die energiebronne wat tot ons beskikking is, en tegnologie wat ontwikkel word, is baie goed. So is jy ook báie goed, en die hele mensdom is oorwegend báie goed! Nou sê jy nee, die mens is verdorwe en vernietig alles, en misdaad verwoes ons, en niemand kan vertrou word nie! Dan sê ek vir jou jy is verkeerd, dis steeds uitsonderings.

Enige mens op aarde kan 'n groot mes in die hande kry, en baie het toegang tot vuurwapens, maar daar is steeds nie elke dag massa slagtings nie.

Jý, ja jý, is BAIE goed! En dis nodig dat jy dit vandag hoor. O nee reg, jy sê vir my ek ken nie jou lewe nie, jy sukkel met dít en dat, dan sê ek vir jou dat jy in die oë van die Here baie goed is. Het jy nie ook al tientalle kere verstom gestaan oor die goedheid van mense nie? Was jy nie ook al verras deur vreemdelinge se welwillendheid nie? Het jy nie ook al gewonder hoekom mense soms so uit hul pad sal gaan vir ander nie? My vriend, dis omdat die Here nou nog steeds sê: Dit is báie goed! Natuurlik man, jy is immers na sy beeld geskep, en Hy is baie goed. As sy hande jou gevorm het, kan jy niks anders wees nie, hoewel daar tog wel vele mense is wat in ons oë glad nie goed is nie. Moet asseblief om vadersnaam nie die hele wêreld oor daardie kam skeer nie, en beslis nie jouself nie! Voel goed, voel nou dadelik goed, want 'n Meester het jou gemaak. Jy hoef nie vir my te glo nie, glo die Here.

The Phuthaditjhaba Tactical Response Team has recently arrested a man following information that he possesses a firearm. The members who were officially on duty followed up on information of the alleged possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition around the Tseseng area. They spotted the suspect at Makeneng near the local tavern. He was approached, searched and they found a 9mm pistol and live

ammunition and couldn't produce any documentation of possessing the firearm. The 32-year-old foreign national currently residing at Namahadi village here in QwaQwa was arrested and detained in police cells. He appeared before the Tseseng Magistrate court on Friday, 14 January 2022 and faces a charge of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Group fight leaves one dead after he got stabbed PHUTHADITJHABA | CORNÉ VAN NOORDWYK A man from the Lusaka section of the Makwane Village was stabbed with a knife here in Phuthaditjhaba Industrial Two-area during a group fight. He was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his sustained injuries. The local police are now looking for the suspects responsible for stabbing the victim. It is alleged that on Thursday, 13 January 2022 at about 17:30 the Phuthaditjhaba police received a complaint that was called in from the Phuthaditjhaba Industrial Two-area. The caller reported a group of males stabbing each other. They rushed to the crime scene but unfortunately found that the groups already fled and one victim was taken to the hospital with a private vehicle. The police went to the hospital and found the victim, who identified himself as Tsoeu Mofokeng, with multiple stab wounds. He is from the Lusaka section of Makwane Village here in QwaQwa. Unfortunately, he couldn’t provide further information about the fight due to his critical and unstable condition.

A case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm was then opened but later changed to a murder investigation because later that day at approximately 22:20 the police was summoned to the hospital where they were informed that the stabbed victim has died. A case of murder is still being investigated by the police.

The Harrismith highway patrol has recently intercepted two suspicious vehicles that were travelling on the N3 highway on the north bound towards Johannesburg. Officers then seized suspected stolen tower batteries, the two vehicles used to transport them and arrested the five suspects. On Friday 14 January 2022 at approximately 08:20 two members of Harrismith Highway Patrol were patrolling on the N3 near Eeram Farm about 25 kilometres from Harrismith. They spotted a white suspicious Nissan bakkie and stopped it. Upon searching it they found nine tower batteries and arrested the two occupants. The arrest of the two suspects led police to drive extra 30 kilometres towards Warden where they arrested three suspects travelling with a black Toyota Yaris. There were three occupants and when searching the car, police found three other tower batteries. All five suspects were arrested and detained. A total of 12 batteries was retrieved from the suspects. The service provider of the batteries has been contacted to come and identify and verify their property and where it might have been stolen. Other charges could be added to this case. The five suspects between 30 and 40 years of age appeared before the Harrismith Magistrate court on Monday, 17 January 2022 and faced charges of possession of suspected stolen property.

VIR DIE REKORD Die gees van opgewondenheid en oorwinning spoel oor die groen grasvelde terwyl die klanke van “jam blikke Jam blikke 3 x 3” die stilte breek. Die reuk van jaffels en pannekoek en lekker boeretroos hang in die lug terwyl die atlete aantree in die stryd om die algelehele wenner te word en rekords wat alreeds vir jare staan te breek. Hoe lekker is dit nie om na ‘n ruk van geen skole sport weer in die stadion te sit en te sien

| CORNé VAN NOORDWYK hoe die talente hulle self uitleef op die sportveld nie. En hier besef ons weer dat daar so baie is waarvoor ons kan dankbaar wees. Dis die samesyn van ‘n gemeenskap om die sportveld wat in die sukses en glorie van ons kinders deel. Ons skole vorm die lewensaar van ‘n suksesvolle gemeenskap. Vir plattelandse skole is die stryd om in dieselfde liga as die groter finansieel sterker skole te meeding ‘n uitdaging. Maar Rekord

NET ‘N OOMBLIK My vriendin, Marlene Murphy Jordaan vertel van die koei wat haar agter 'n dun boompie laat skuil het. ‘n Hurter en n Brahmaan is nou maar net maatjies. Stompie, die eerste bul van papierafkoms wat ek kon onthou, was nie lief vir wit mense nie. Hy het behoorlik vir my oorlede pa 'n seslyndraad hekkies laat hardloop.

Ou Mpe, die Hurters se "all sorts handyman" en regterhand kon met Stompie skou, maar wees net wit en jy is die gebroke Matador. So boer die uwe mos ook self. Ja, ja boer om uit te boer ook...(wink wink). Man, hiérdie antie het haar eie plaas gehad. "Memories...I had a farm in Africa."

Bietjie agtergrond vir my storie: Kransfontein is die Ficksburg-plaas in die familie. Brahmane het in die sandsteen voetpaaie uitgetrap tot bo die berg. Die Brahmane wat miskien

kan getuig dat die klein skole nie terug staan nie! Geleenthede is daar om elke kind tot die beste te slyp word weekliks bevestig met die skole nuus wat met trots gedeel word. Dit maak ons trots om te weet dat ons skool, ons gemeenskap se naam hoog hou. Skole nuus is meer as net ‘n foto en ‘n byskrif. Dis ‘n getuigskrif dat die skool aan wie jy jou kinders se opvoeding aan toe vertrou het die regte keuse is.

Steak and Kidney Casserole Steak and kidney, Old Brown sherry and cubed butternut make this a casserole that's perfect for a meal around the table…

PREP TIME: COOKING TIME: SERVES:

10 minutes 2 hours 5-6

Recipe Ingredients 10 ml SPAR olive oil +-675g cubed steak and kidney mix 1 medium onion, coarsely chopped salt and freshly ground pepper 100 ml Old Brown sherry (4 tots) 2 ml dried thyme 125 ml hot beef stock (prepared with 1/2 stock cube) 600g punnet FRESHLINE Butternut Soup Mix 75 ml SPAR MILK mixed with 25 ml corn flour

Recipe Method Pre-heat oven to 180ºC. Lightly brown the meat and onion together in heated oil in a pot. Season to taste and pour on the sherry and thyme. Bring to the boil.

Transfer to a casserole dish.

Pour on the hot stock, cover and place in the oven for 1 hour.

Stir in the soup vegetable mix, cover again, and cook for a further 30 minutes.

Stir in the corn flour/milk paste to thicken the sauce. Serve.

Hints & Tips For those not wanting to use alcohol in cooking, substitute sherry with the juice and grated rind of a freshly squeezed orange

AFRICAN RED-EYED BULBUL | PYCNONOTUS NIGRICANS AFRICAN RED-EYED BULBUL APPEARANCE The African red-eyed bulbul has greyish/brown plumage on its upper parts, extending onto the chest, with white plumage on their underparts. The head is darker with a crest on the top of the head. A bright yellow vent is visible. The eyes are dark, bill, legs and feet are black. A conspicuous orange to red eye ring surrounds the eye.

This is a smallish bird at 20 cm, with males being slightly larger than females. Easily distinguished from the darkcapped bulbul by the red eye ring.

DIET The red-eyed bulbul mainly eats fruit, but will hawk insects occasionally. At certain times of the year, they feed on nectar and flower petals, making them important pollinators.

AFRICAN RED-EYED BULBUL BREEDING African red-eyed bulbuls are monogamous. The female builds a cup nest, always well concealed in foliage, using dry grass and twigs. The two to 3 eggs are incubated for around 15 days. The Jacobin robin brood parasite the African red-eyed bulbul. The African red-eyed bulbul will breed with the dark-capped bulbul and the Cape bulbul, forming hybrids, in areas where their ranges overlap.

AFRICAN RED-EYED BULBUL BEHAVIOUR African red-eyed bulbul are normally seen in pairs or small groups. During the breeding season, the red-eyed bulbul is territorial.

THREATS None, very common across its range.

AFRICAN RED-EYED BULBUL DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT The African red-eyed bulbul is a near endemic, and is found in central and western parts of South Africa. It is absent from the eastern side and most of the Western Cape. This birds preferred habitat is arid to semi-arid woodlands along drainage lines. This bulbul is common in urban gardens and parks. They are never far from water and their range has extended with the provision of livestock water points.

The popular bakkie has never been slack in the offroad department, but the Toyota Hilux GR Sport is more capable. There’s an upgraded suspension system featuring monotube shock absorbers, new front springs, automatic limited-slip differential and active traction control. There are also upgrades to the vibration and noise countermeasures.

Toyota Europe has confirmed the launch of the new Hilux GR Sport. With inspiration straight from Toyota Gazoo Racing, this looks to be the sportiest Hilux to date.

Toyota claims these upgrades ‘ deliver significant improvements in handling characteristics, including steering effort and steering angle response, straight-line performance, a flat ride and reassuring roll and rear grip feel.’ As far as visual changes go, the Toyota Hilux GR Sport features a black front grille with G-pattern mesh and a classic-looking Toyota emblem. There are new larger front fog light surrounds, 17-inch alloy wheels which are

black and machined and wrapped in all-terrain tyres.

There is black detailing on the door mirror casings, side steps, tailgate handle and over-fenders. The shocks and springs are finished in red and there are subtle GR Sport badges. It’s more subtle than the Thai-built wild Revo Hilux shown in 2021. Inside, the cabin gains sports seats finished in black leather and synthetic suede with red perforations and contrast stitching. There’s GR Sport

branding on the seats, carpets, starter button and dashboard graphics. There are also aluminium pedals, carbon fibre-style trim and a red insert across the dashboard. Now if you’re expecting an engine upgrade, remember this is a GR Sport model, not a pure GR so the focus here is on a sportier drive and look. The current 2.8 engine offers plenty of go in any case with 150 kW and 500 Nm, paired to a 6-speed automatic gearbox. – Source: cars.co.za

GWM P Series Bakkie is a beast!

Courtesy: Cars.co.za Billed as the most ambitious Chinese double-cab to date, GWM has stated its intentions to become a 'Top 3' bakkie brand with its new P Series. Design proportions are bold, and the P Series measures 5.4 metres nose-to-tail, 1.86 metres wide and stands 1.93 metres tall. This new Chinese double-cab rides on the P71 ladder-frame platform, which it shares with the Haval H9 large SUV – familiar to South Africans who are followers of the Chinese brand.

The cabin architecture is impressive for a Chinese vehicle with a large touchscreen infotainment system and passenger vehicle-like ergonomics.

Mechanically, the P Series is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol which drives all four wheels via an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine boosts 140 kW and 360 Nm. GWM has also equipped the P Series with 3 differential locks, which should theoretically give it unrivalled offroad ability. GWM has not yet been clear as to whether the 3 differential locks will be a standard configuration or optional, as part of a dedicated off-road package. Features? Plenty. There is a surround-view camera, rear-view camera and 12 radar pods allow for lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control. All active safety interventions systems are managed by Bosch’s 9.3generation stability control. .
