Ilearned about Harpeth Hall from a family friend who encouraged me to apply. My parents were concerned about the financial commitment but were immediately drawn to the academic opportunities it affords to girls in the community. We were excited to learn that we qualified for financial aid, and I enrolled as a student in the seventh grade. I was nervous at first about going to an all-girls, private school, but everyone was so friendly and welcoming. I soon learned the ease of accelerating in an atmosphere without boys — and reveled in the female camaraderie.

Harpeth Hall truly set the foundation for who I am today. It instilled in me a drive to succeed and underscored the persistence and necessity of female leadership in society. Harpeth Hall inspired me to pursue paths that are not always highlighted for young girls. I went on to study engineering in college while playing a varsity sport, overly prepared by teachers who had taught me how to study and manage my time. I continued my studies in law school, ultimately choosing to focus my legal career on intellectual property and patent law, specifically. And at every turn, I leaned on my ability to think critically, to lead confidently, and to live honorably to overcome the various challenges I faced as a diverse female determined to succeed.

In the end, it is the lessons and values I learned as a young student at Harpeth Hall that have stayed with me the most. It is also what keeps me involved in the Harpeth Hall community years later. I enjoy being a part of an institution that recognizes the importance of the advancement of young women, and I try to give back in any way I can to ensure the opportunities continue to grow. Every girl has a place at Harpeth Hall, and the faculty are focused on making each girl better. The long tenure of many of the teachers at Harpeth Hall speaks for itself; they love what they do and are leaders in their field. The students and community are the direct benefactors of their commitment.

Even though I do not live in Nashville, I have maintained my connection to Harpeth Hall by serving on the National Advisory Council and the Board of Trustees. I have two daughters who attend a public charter school in Atlanta, and I am always looking to Harpeth Hall as a model. Harpeth Hall stays on the cutting edge of education, and I will continue to be in awe of its dedication to our young, female leaders of the future.

Harpeth Hall is a place that I think of very fondly. I made lifelong friendships, the teachers encouraged my love of learning, and I was challenged at a personal and academic level. When I began at Harpeth Hall in seventh grade, I could see that the opportunities were endless. These opportunities led to interests, which in turn led to passions and careers. Now seven years out, I can easily see how Harpeth Hall has influenced my fellow classmates and me. Today, we make up a group of leaders in education, the arts, business, and science. Looking back at my own path, I can trace its roots back to the classrooms of Harpeth Hall. In middle school, I completed capstone projects, in which I examined the physics of swimming and learned about coral bleaching. In high school, I joined Science Olympiad and engineering competitions. With a vast array of opportunities to explore my interests, biology became my primary focus, and I declared as a Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology major at Yale University. In student clubs at Harpeth Hall, I honed leadership skills that were crucial in college when I was elected captain for the varsity swim and dive team. When the team clinched the championship title, I was reminded of the camaraderie and teamwork of Harpeth Hall’s swim team under Polly Linden. Harpeth Hall excels in establishing a strong liberal arts foundation. From classes in the arts and humanities, I developed an appreciation for cultures and narratives from all over the world. Dr. Art Echerd’s enthusiasm about art history was infectious. Years later, I was amazed to see the painting Las Meninas in person in Madrid. When I traveled through Japan by train, I remembered Dr. Jack Henderson’s lectures on the history of Japan and their distinct traditions. Through Winterim, I learned how adapt to unfamiliar scenarios when I taught English at a school in rural Thailand. Winterim experiences were instrumental when I joined the workforce researching with global collaborators in the HIV field. Harpeth Hall instills values of integrity, determination, and confidence — values that I will carry with me on my next journey to the University of Tennessee — Memphis medical school this fall. I prioritize contributing annually to Harpeth Hall, in part because I am thankful for my education and for the financial aid I received through the Melkus Family Scholarship. I have strong hopes that Harpeth Hall will remain steadfast in its commitment to enrich the school in diversity and to provide an environment for young women to realize their potential to become the leaders of tomorrow.

When the Advancement Office asked if I would be featured in the annual Report on Philanthropy, it was not even a question. Of course, my answer was yes. So much of my Harpeth Hall experience has never been a question. I knew without question that I wanted to follow my mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother to this special place. I knew without question that I wanted to take advantage of every opportunity the school had to offer. And as an alumna, I know without question that I want to support Harpeth Hall in every way I can imagine. Like many alumnae, I credit Harpeth Hall with creating the woman I am today. While academics did not always come to me easily, I learned that success was still possible with hard work and the knowledge that no one can achieve success for you. I also learned the value of confidence in the face of adversity, and I found my sense of humor here too. I’ve taken these lessons into the real estate world and they have led me to great success, including being named to Nashville’s Top 100 Realtors and winning numerous industry awards. Now as I balance my career in real estate with my life at home with my wife and our two-year-old, Anne Fleming, as well as another little girl on the way, I am already imagining the special place that Harpeth Hall will be for my girls. Preparing financially for my girls to be able to attend my alma mater is a central goal for my future. When I think about Harpeth Hall’s future, I want it to be a place that is inclusive for all, a place that continues to transform lives, a place that continues to grow to meet the needs of girls and young women. For my hopes for the future to be realized, I know that I must do my part by supporting the school. I have coached Middle School lacrosse, volunteered with the Advancement and Alumnae Relations office, and I have even emceed every Sunday on Souby since its inception over a decade ago. I have also supported the school financially by being a loyal donor to the Annual Fund, and I joined the Founders Society at the young age of 25. It was a natural choice to include the place I care so deeply about in my estate plans. Additionally, I appreciate that I can adjust the planned gift as my life circumstances change. Harpeth Hall is here after my grandmother is long gone, and I want Harpeth Hall to be here when I am long gone too. Until then, I am sure I will continue to be known for my obsession with Harpeth Hall, and it will be a badge I wear proudly.

Annual Fund Parent Chairs Carolyn and Steve Taylor with Eleanor ’22 and Avery ’18

The Taylor Family

We are proud to say we have now been Harpeth Hall parents for more than eight years. We moved our two girls from a co-educational school to Harpeth Hall because we believe in the power of an all-girls education and the lifelong value it offers. It is often said that “girls here don’t have equal opportunity, they have every opportunity” and we could not agree more. In addition to a premier academic education, girls here develop both amazing leadership and team-building skills and are also deeply engaged in extracurricular activities at Harpeth Hall and in the wider community. Through our older daughter Avery ’18, who is a junior at Duke University, and her friends and classmates, we have seen firsthand how well-prepared they were to transition to college and life beyond this beautiful campus. They are mature and confident young women who are seeking out and taking advantage of opportunities and excelling in their studies. Through our younger daughter Eleanor ’22 and her friends and classmates here at Harpeth Hall, we see girls who are encouraged to try new things and pursue their interests, knowing they are both challenged and supported along the way. Harpeth Hall fostered our daughters’ creativity through its amazing arts program and also fostered their ability to think critically through its rigorous academics. In today’s world, those two things are equally important as both are needed to craft new ideas and solutions to problems. We are grateful for the incredible Harpeth Hall community of families, faculty, administration, staff and coaches — now more than ever in the midst of the pandemic. It has been a privilege to serve as your Annual Fund Parent Chairs this year. Thank you for giving back to this school that has given to all of our daughters, and all of us, so much education, growth, empowerment, and joy.
