THE 2014 CHILDWICKBURY ARTS FAIR TAKES PLACE ON THE 4th, 5th & 6th JULY

In 2003 the Childwickbury estate first opened its gates to a new art event for St Albans; it has since grown into a hugely popular and well respected event for both visitors and participants. Childwickbury Arts Fair now consists of marquees housing over 60 artists, live music, fresh and healthy food, a licensed bar, education and activities for everyone, all in a special and unique atmosphere.

What makes this event so inspiring is that all artists and craftspeople demonstrate their skills on site. The relaxed and easy going attitude of the fair creates the perfect environment for visitors to approach artists and ask them questions about how they work. Of course it is also a perfect occasion to buy original pieces of art direct from the artist.

CLASSICS ON THE COMMON 2014 Little wonder Classics on the Common, already Britain’s biggest mid-week classic car show, now ranks among the top events of the classics calendar. This year’s main beneficiaries will be Community Meeting Point, Alzheimer’s Society (Local Branch), Youth Talk, Macmillan Cancer Support and Guildford Rotary Eye Project. The organisers, Harpenden Village Rotary Club, thank all who support the event so generously.

Classics on the Commmon, organised by Harpenden Village Rotary Club, will be on Wednesday 30th July. Once a year Harpenden Common (that calm, sweeping tract of common land, that Jewel in the town’s crown) comes alive for half a day with more than 1000 classic cars and other four-wheelers, plus motor cycles and scooters. There you’ll find a Chevy Bel Air rubbing shoulders with a 1927 Trojan, and a rare 1978 Mantra Bagheera with a ‘59 Berliet. Plus 10,000 admiring spectators.

Last year’s event raised £23,000 for charity.

CLUB Harpenden mum Caroline Jones loves her music, but couldn’t find what she wanted on her AL5 doorstep, so in October 2012 Caroline launched Rewind, a pop up disco, bringing the dance floor to town. “I only set Rewind up so I could guarantee myself a night out and then be home in time for the babysitter!” Working with friend and designer Chris Walker www. chriswalkercreative.com the artwork was created, using the old style tape cassette as the visual image “I used to love recording the top 40 and was for ever rewinding the tape recorder in pause/play mode”. School gates were her target and soon the word spread, in October 2012, hiring a local church hall, Caroline launched Rewind. Rewind continues to grow, regularly selling out to 300 capacity crowds and the word is spreading. Private bookings are also taken and Rewind often pops up at school PTA events and private birthday parties (for grown-ups only!)

“Rewind is about playing cool tunes, right across the decades, so you may hear resident DJ Vinyl Ritchie playing Little Richard, followed by the Stone Roses, followed by Run DMC”. “We mix it up and the crowd love it”. “We also encourage requests and the blackboard is much in use”. Rewind continues to receive some great 5 star reviews: “top tunes all evening”, “Fantastic night! Would definitely go again, what a great idea!” “Wicked night. Love love love rewind pop-up club!” Tickets are now on sale at The Silver Palate deli, Vaughan Road and here’s the dates for your diary.... Saturday 27th September 8pm - midnight, £10. Then we look forward to our big Christmas night on Saturday 13th December, doors opening at 7pm with music until 12.30am, £14.

www.facebook.com/Rewindpopupclub We are also delighted to be a shortlisted ‘Best Party Provider’ finalist in the Mum’s Guide to Harpenden 2014 Awards (winner to be announced 11th July).

ST NICHOLAS SCHOOL HISTORY EXHIBITION The collection will also include a small number of artefacts kindly loaned to us by Harpenden’s Historical Society which include a desk, old ink pens, slate boards (this will help us set up a Victorian classroom set up which we are hoping to contrast with a contemporary classroom style). To raise funds a fee will be charged on the door.

This event will take place on Saturday 12th July from 10am to 12.30pm in the school hall, exhibiting numerous artefacts and photos collated over the years (in addition to the cabinet funded by the PTA unveiled before Easter).

They will also be selling the school history booklet, refreshments and possibly a quiz to enter (or similar event). They are also hoping to provide activities for children e.g. writing with quill-like pens and ink. Please do save the date in your diary for a family visit. Grove House (part of Rennie Grove Hospice Care) provides care and support to patients with life-limiting illness throughout the Chilterns area of Buckinghamshire & the St Albans, Harpenden and Dacorum districts of Hertfordshire. The hospice charity’s services are tailored to the individual’s needs: whether supporting patients through treatment to full recovery - or ensuring a patient can receive the best possible end of life care in the place of their choice. SPOTLIGHT ON ST ALBANS CHRISTMAS MARKET

The Christmas market was the subject of St Albans City and District Council’s Public Services Scrutiny Committee’s deliberations at its meeting.

We made a number of recommendations for the Committee to consider including improving chalet decoration, lighting, entertainment and signage, and having more food chalets.”

The Committee heard that an estimated 45,000 people visited St Albans Christmas Market in 2013 and that over 87% of chalet days were sold. Many City centre retailers reported increased footfall and trade and there was positive feedback from the majority of exhibitors, most saying they would return this year.

Chair of the Public Services Scrutiny Committee, Councillor Chris White said: “It is clear from the feedback of the Christmas Market Task and Finish Group that a positive start was made with this year’s first St Albans Christmas Market. It is also clear that the team has learned many lessons.

Research identified a number of weaknesses too including late planning, problems with the Vintry Garden site, poor chalet decoration and lack of entertainment and festive atmosphere.

“The Committee wants to see a boost to the market this year with more stalls accommodated in a wider area. We also want to see lots more entertainment to create a better Christmas atmosphere. If anyone has ideas for developing the Christmas Market for the future, we would like to hear from them.”

Councillor Roma Mills, Chair of the Christmas Market Task and Finish Group commented: “Our working group has been looking into how the operation of the first market went and feedback so far received from traders, visitors and residents.

To give your views and ideas for developing St Albans Christmas Market in 2014, please email: scrutiny@stalbans.gov.uk or telephone 01727 819529

IS THE CUP COMING H O M E THIS TIME?

Resistance is futile. The World Cup is just around the corner, and there is very little you can do about it!

Still, if you can’t fight the tide, you may as well learn to swim along with it! FOOTBALL fans worldwide are readying themselves for five weeks of wall-to-wall football, and as the 20th FIFA World Cup heads to Brazil between 12th June and 13th July 2014, the five time champions will be hopeful of lifting the trophy again. But with Spain and Germany in good nick, and other surprises sure to come to the fore, the month-long football festival will not be one to miss.

SUMMER FUN Variety is said to be the spice of life and I’m not one to disagree. For me the summer has to be a mixture of lazing about but also keeping active so that I don’t start to feel sluggish. So that you can fully enjoy those moments of lounging in the shade with a drink in one hand & kindle in the other, I’ve had a think about some fun and games to spice up your summer holidays. Who remembers Swingball? This is one of those fabulous games which you can play almost anywhere & which isn’t a faff to set up. It’s not overly sweaty unless you get fiercely competitive yet it’s wonderful for upper body toning, waistline work and, if you let your imagination run away with the rules, can provide a total body workout. Next on my menu of outdoor delights is Speedminton, a variation on badminton which works brilliantly on sand or grass. You can even get luminous shuttlecocks to play at dusk when you don’t want to leave the beach just yet! Frisbees get the thumbs up every year as a portable, fun & easy to learn activity. Some people call it a sport although for me there’s always way too much laughter involved to give it that title! The great thing about Frisbee is that it offers an effective cardiovascular workout & some great plyometrics depending on how high you’re prepared to jump.

& GAMES

Twister is an incredible activity for beach holidays or camping trips.Again, it’s portable and easy to understand. My tip for anyone wanting to become the summer 2014 Twister Champion is to warm up before you play so that your muscles are supple ahead of the game.

I hope I’ve given you some inspiration for an active and enjoyable summer. Feel free to get in touch for more motivation and inspiration at: www.greenlightlifestyles.co.uk Wishing you a happy and healthy summer. Erica Spencer Green

NEW CHARGING SCHEME FOR COUNCIL CAR PARKS Changes are being made to charges at car parks to make the most of available capacity, helping workers and visitors to St Albans. The new charges come into effect at car parks owned by St Albans City and District Council from 1 April. They are designed to encourage the use of particular car parks by leisure users, workers or shoppers. It means that the charges will now vary between car parks managed on behalf of the Council by NCP under its new contract. Workers wanting to park all day in St Albans will now only have to pay £5 if they park at the following NCP-managed car parks: • Bricket Road North • Keyfield Terrace • Gombards, • Townsend Avenue.

At NCP car parks elsewhere in the City and at the Civic Centre, it will cost £10 for all-day parking. Charges have also been frozen or reduced for stays of up to three hours at the following NCP car parks, benefitting leisure users and shoppers: • Drovers Way • Russell Avenue • Bowers Way East • Bowers Way West • London Road • Amenbury Lane • Adelaide Street Cllr Beric Read, Portfolio Holder for Community Engagement and Localism at St Albans City and District Council, said: “There is a tariff now to suit every customer. In the week, shoppers and workers can park in the City centre at rates that are the same or cheaper, depending on where they park. This strategy not only helps residents but also supports the local economy.” Continued on page 22

NEW CHARGING SCHEME FOR COUNCIL CAR PARKS Continued

Leisure users and shoppers will still be able to use the Council-run Westminster Lodge car park free of charge for up to two hours.

A Pay By Phone service is also being introduced at all NCP car parks, making it easier for customers to pay for parking. This will complement the Pay By Phone service introduced in August last year in relation to off-road and on-street parking.

They will also be able to park on Sundays for £1 at the Council’s NCP car parks and at the Council-run Civic Centre car park (accessed from Bricket Road, St Albans). This will mean that on Sundays the City centre car parks normally used by visitors will have the same £1 charge. This will allow us to promote shopping in St Albans more easily. The charge also compares favourably with surrounding areas.

Cllr Read added: “I am very happy to see the introduction of a better charging strategy, giving the majority of parkers a reduction or hold on parking costs and allowing a better management of parking volumes. This is a great step to making it easier to park in St Albans, and improvements in technology will be following.”

The new contract with NCP also provides for improvements to car parks. Brighter LED lighting will be installed at Drovers Way and Russell Avenue, helping to improve the safety of customers.

The Council has also reviewed the cost of parking permits and is introducing a 2% increase. For a resident’s all day permit Type B this equates to an increase of 76p to £38.76.

WHERE IS THE TOP UK TOURIST DESTINATION? But why?

The shopping centre is enormous, and is a major reason why many people cram themselves into the town centre every weekend. The Friary Centre is so large that you can hire cars to push your kids round in to stop them moaning. Surprisingly Guildford has been named UK’s tourist destination of the year is for 2014. Known throughout the world as the spiritual and cultural centre of the UK, with delights from the Friary Centre mall to the thrills of the cinema multiplex, it’s the jewel in the crown of the UK tourism industry... apparently. The Surrey town of Guildford has been named the tourist destination of the year by the Tourist Network Awards. The town sees millions of day-trippers every year, and the network put the number of visits together with the quality of the attractions and the service provided by people working in tourist attractions.

Aside from shopping, there’s Guildford cathedral (a modern cathedral where scenes were filmed for The Omen), Loseley House, Clandon Park, Hatchlands Park, Spike Heritage centre, the castle (with a statue of Alice in Wonderland in the garden to reflect the fact that the town was home to Lewis Carroll), the museum, the lido, the leisure complex and a number of theatres. It also has some great claims to fame - including the fact that it was where The Stranglers grew up (they were originally known as The Guildford Stranglers), it was the fictional home of Ford Prefect in The Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy, and it was the first recorded place where cricket was played (in 1598). TEAM - CAPTAIN SLOW RAISING MONEY FOR TOMMY’S

Harpenden Lads London To Surrey 100 mile Bike to raise money for Tommy’s, the baby charity because every Mum and Dad deserves to see their baby smile - Please help “Team - Captain Slow” to raise as much as possible!

in London were inspired to start fundraising for more research into pregnancy problems. Soon, their cause was taken up by others and a charity affectionately known as ‘Tommy’s’ (after St Thomas’ Hospital) was born.

That was 1992. Today,we lead the way in maternal and fetal research in the UK.To give every baby the best chance of being born healthy, we work to fund medical research into the causes of premature birth, stillbirth and miscarriage. (Matthew Downes, Peter Scrivener, Ross Clark, , Duncan Matthews, Mark Scrivener)

A team of five are taking part in the 100 mile Prudential RideLondon on August 10 2014. They are all local guys and three of them are fortunate enough to have children. They are taking part in this event to raise money for a great charityTommy’s.The reason they chose this charity is because they all know couples that have gone through the sadness of having a miscarriage, premature birth or had a still birth. To show their support to this charity, they aim to raise as much money as they can to help with the research. Tommy’s exists to save babies lives by funding research and providing information on the causes and prevention of miscarriage, premature birth and still birth. Tommy’s funds research into pregnancy problems and provides information to parents. We believe it is unacceptable that one in four women lose a baby during pregnancy and birth. When a pregnancy fails or a baby dies, the families affected can be devastated and often have a desperate need to know why. Frustrated at the lack of research that meant they could rarely answer this question, two obstetricians working in the maternity unit at St Thomas’ Hospital

The lads have just recently completed a 50 mile bike ride for a local charity and wanted to set themselves another physically challenging goal, as well as raise money for a charity very close to their hearts. So what better way to do this then cycle 100 miles in the Prudential RideLondon, London and Surrey on Sunday 10 August 2014! Here are a few words from Rob & Emma from Harpenden who have been through what Tommy’s aims to prevent:On the 14th November 2013 a very special little boy was born sleeping. Rob and myself became parents that day to a baby we will never see again but we will never forget. Tommys is a charity that aim to halve the number of babies that die during pregnancy or birth by 2030. I hugely believe that every parent has a right to see their baby smile. So boys I know 100 miles is a long way but if you can help towards this aim for Tommys you will have one very proud little boy looking down on you for every mile you cycle. 10 things you may not have known a bout Wimbledon

Wimbledon Fortnight 2014 runs from June 23th until July 6th. Whether you like tennis or not you cannot deny the rich history which surrounds the tournament and the associated ritual and attention to detail. 1.

The Wimbledon Championships date back to 1877 but did not take up residence at Church Road until 1922, where the ground now has a capacity of 35,000.

2.

Up to 40,000 tennis balls will be used during the tournament, each one hand-tested for weight, bounce and compression and stored at exactly 68 degrees

3.

Yellow balls were first used in 1986 and will this year be collected by a total of 200 ball boys and girls who have all undergone a rigorous training programme.

4.

More than 27,000 kilos of English strawberries are likely to be eaten by spectators, topped by 7,000 litres of cream.

5. In 1968, when prize money was first awarded at Wimbledon, the total was ÂŁ26,150. 6.

The trophy for the men’s singles at Wimbledon is one of the most recognisable

in sport and dates back to 1887. The magnificent gold cup stands 18 1/2 inches high & has a diameter of 7 1/2 inches, but the eagle-eyed might notice the pineapple design which adorns the top of the lid.

7.

The longest match lasted 112 games, between RA (Pancho) Gonzalez & Charlie Passarell, both from the US, in 1966. The first set alone was 46 games long.

8.

The famous Wimbledon turf is a mixture of 70% perennial rye grass and 30% Barcrown creeping red fescue. It is cut to a height of exactly eight millimetres.

9.

More than 6,000 people staff the championships, including a temporary staff of several hundred hired by the All England Club as well as others who are provided by firms, contractors, voluntary bodies and public services.

10.

During World War II all tennis halted at Wimbledon, but the grounds of the All England club were pressed into action to aid the British war effort.

HOW COULD AFFECT US Climate change is a large-scale, long-term shift in the planet’s weather patterns or average temperatures; Earth has had tropical climates and ice ages many times in its 4.5 billion years.

According to the Met Office, Scientific research shows that the climate - that is, the average temperature of the planet’s surface - has risen by 0.89 °C from 1901 to 2012. Compared with climate change patterns throughout Earth’s history, the rate of temperature rise since the Industrial Revolution is extremely high. Rothamstead research developed a weather based model to look at the impact of climate change on wheat. They found that, with temperature increases, wheat flowering would occur earlier, and the incidence of disease would increase substantially. This would have a dramatic impact on the world as wheat is one of the world’s most important crops for human consumption. Research based on climate change models are predicting warmer, wetter winters in the UK, which will result in a greater incidence of wheat crop blight by the middle of this century. Climate change has, and will continue to have, a dramatic impact on crops.

Researchers from St Albans and Harpenden fear that these changes will lead to an increase in disease and weed distribution. Harpenden’s Rothamsted Research scientists, along with an EU consortium, have developed a model to predict the shift in distribution of ragweed (a plant native to North America) in northern latitudes. Dr Jonathan Storkey, Rothamsted’s lead scientist for the study, said it was a serious weed which has highly allergenic pollen and, as it flowers late, would significantly increase the hay fever season. The weed has already spread into Hungary and the Rhône valley in France. Dr Storkey said the climate in the south of the UK was predicted to be suitable for ragweed. As a result, Rothamsted has urged ongoing surveillance and research on existing ragweed patches in the UK.

£5k for 5k?

Tragically most of us know someone who has been dealt the devastating blow of being diagnosed with cancer.

Each time a diagnosis is made, it affects more than the individual concerned; whether given to a grandparent, parent or child, a diagnosis touches the lives of entire families. If there was something you could do that would mean that those families had greater odds of a happy ending, you would do it wouldn’t you?

That thought is what made a group of mums from St Hilda’s School in Harpenden start thinking … What if they could do something to help raise money for Cancer Research UK? The mums (who now number a team of 9) have joined together to raise money by taking part in local 5k Race for Life events.

Jennie Gillies, one of the mums, explains more: “Cancer Research UK is a significant charity for many of us who have lost loved ones to cancer. However our predominant reason is to celebrate the courage of those we know - parents just like us - who are currently fighting their own battles with verve, vigour and a smile on their face. If they can do that, we should be able to manage some short term pain around the race track?”

So far the St Hilda’s Angels have raised over £4k – can you help them raise £5k?

They can be sponsored by texting STHA50 followed by the amount you would like to donate to 70070 or by visiting:

GREEN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AT THE HEART OF ECONOMIC PROSPERITY Councillor Julian Daly, Leader of St Albans City and District Council, has highlighted the importance of green technology to the future of the St Albans economy.

“St Albans is one of the most economically resilient areas of the country. Underpinning that resilience are three factors; our great transport links; our beautiful historic city; and the prosperity afforded us by high value local jobs. In St Albans these are overwhelmingly in the professional services and green technology sectors. The concentration of green technology business, research, education and enterprise is fundamental to our prosperity. This cluster is becoming known locally as The Green Triangle.” Two major world class centres of excellence specialising in environmental issues are located in and around St Albans. Rothamsted Research in Harpenden has an international reputation for science in support of sustainable land management and its environmental impact. The Building Research Establishment (BRE) in Bricket Wood is world-renowned for its expertise in environmental construction and the sustainable build environment. The BRE’s Innovation Park has over 300 different innovations and emerging technologies and features the world’s first zero carbon house.

“They are developing an important environmental skills base through engineering, training and stimulating green technology enterprise. They are also providing infrastructure linking green research, science, engineering and technology enterprises in the UK.

“This area is the only one in the UK that has this level of expertise and specialism in green technology. It is built on the continuing global success of the key partners” - Rothamsted Research, the Building Research Establishment and the University of Hertfordshire. They have the shared knowledge and specialised services to sustain green business growth and are able to collaborate on specialist research. “The Council and our business and research partners are actively lobbying government to raise the profile of the St Albans Green Triangle.”

HATS FOR HIRE AND/OR SALE

A third centre of environmental innovation, The University of Hertfordshire, is located in nearby Hatfield. As individual local employers, these three organisations are among the largest in Hertfordshire. Together they have a research spend in the region of £100 million and employ around 1,500 highly skilled research staff in green technology. Councillor Daly continued: “Our superb green technology businesses are working together to encourage innovation in green business and attract global investment into the area.

And if you venture outside the gates of the Discovery Centre there is even more open space and another playground. Cognisense™ from CMC The growing demands of financial regulaon present serious challenges for those responsible for managing insurance company data:

• • • • • • •

Current plaorms result in mulple manual intervenons, which are prone to error Most current systems focus on singular regulatory regimes Regulaon is moving toward trusted, systemic data and risk informaon aggregaon, as mandatory governance Vital business specific management & - reporng informaon is ‘locked in’ to legal documentaon There is no data standard for raw regulatory data There is no data standard for regulatory data aggregates There is no readily available self-service reporng to mulple channels and devices

The soluon: Cognisense™ Cognisense from CMC Insurance Soluons brings together data from mulple systems and assembles it into pre-configured data aggregates ready for business manipulaon & regulatory reporng in a controlled and governed manner. Cognisense is your short-cut to scenario modelling & regulatory reporng which can help make sense of even the most complex regulatory data environment. With Cognisense, the results you get will accommodate long term architectural goals, whilst ensuring consistent, business decision making, mely reporng and coherent regulatory compliance. The key to Cognisense is data virtualisaon. The most appropriate source data can be garnered from primary transaconal systems with the use of either nave or generic data adaptors before being integrated within the virtualised environment. Controlled transformaons and enrichment can take place under strict quality management and governance rules and reporng can then be undertaken according to individual requirements. This produces mely, consistent, coherent reports with minimal interrupon to crical systems. In this manner insurers can get on top of reporng data issues while leaving data in its current locaon. This will ensure that data is not further copied around the organisaon and limits further data decay. Data can be accessed in real me as it is pulled from source systems as required.

CARITAS COMES TO HARPENDEN

Award-winning ladies choir Caritas Harmony will be combining their love of music with their dedication to supporting good causes when they perform in Harpenden for the first time on Saturday 5th July. The 40-strong group will be performing a medley of popular songs from musicals like Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables as well as popular classical pieces in aid of The Hospice of St Francis in Berkhamsted. And after the success of winning the Luton Choirs Aloud Competition in December, the ladies are hoping to fill St Nicholas Church, on Church Green, Harpenden, where the concert kicks off at 7pm.

“When we visited The Hospice of St Francis in Berkhamsted, we saw what an amazing place it is and what a difference it makes every day to people’s lives. We are proud and pleased to be able to put on a concert to help raise much-needed funds to support their care.” Hospice Community Fundraiser Sarah Ajder said, “I am so pleased that Caritas are helping to raise the profile as well as funds for the Hospice of St Francis in Harpenden, where the Hospice sometimes still seems to be a closely guarded secret! This is a great opportunity for the local community to enjoy a varied program presented by a wonderful choir in a lovely setting.” Tickets, priced £8, are available from the Hospice’s Love to Give shop in Southdown, Harpenden, from Oui Ladies Fashion in Harpenden High Street or from Fay Benning on 01763 853696.

“We’re hoping it’ll be a sell-out,” said Caritas Chairman Tracey Andrews. “We’ve raised over £130k for our local hospice in Luton over the last 10 years and we have a great affiliation to hospices generally.

The Hospice of St Francis cares for patients living with life-shortening illnesses across Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire, offering the only in-patient unit in the area for patients living in Harpenden and St Albans and access to health and wellbeing services to a wide section of the community through its Spring Centre.

“A lot of our members are hugely supportive of the hospice movement. They know someone who has benefitted from hospice care and we’re all conscious of how little Government funding hospices receive.

It also supports patients’ families and carers. All its care is given free of charge but it relies on voluntary donations for more than 80% of its £4.7m a year running costs. To find out more, visit www.stfrancis.org.uk 54

Explore the town’s fascinating past with Harpenden & District Local History Society Town Trail No. 1 Starting from The George and returning to the Harpenden Arms, a fascinating walk back in time along Harpenden High Street.

Ever wondered about Harpenden in days of yore? Harpenden is a thriving town, but to older residents it remains ‘the village’. Many of the buildings and other landmarks from that earlier era are still with us, though their history is sometimes not readily apparent. Other important features from the past are now only memories, but the Society seeks to keep these alive, by bringing Harpenden’s heritage to a wider audience. In the Society’s archive collection are many thousands of historical pictures, books, maps and other fascinating documents and artefacts. The History Centre at Park Hall is open on Tuesday afternoons, and otherwise by arrangement, for academic study as well as for anyone wanting to browse and know more about the gradual evolution of the area and it’s community through past decades, and indeed centuries, to the present day. Supported by Harpenden Town Council, St Albans District Council and Hertfordshire County Council, and with the co-operation of the Harpenden Society, the Local History Society plays a vital role in giving Harpenden its unique identity within Hertfordshire.

1. The George is first mentioned in 1507, but maybe not on this site. It was rebuilt in C19 and is seen here in the 1930s. The site of the garage to the south (now Pizza Express) was a tea garden in Victorian times, when parties drove in by wagonette for ‘Beanfeasts’ and dancing on the lawn. 2. Kingston House, No. 6 High Street was built in 1912 as Edgar Salisbury’s hardware shop on the site of Dr Kingston’s house. Later occupants were Halford’s, C&A stores and M&Co. Note the shields above the windows marking Industry, Strength, Goodwill and Service; also the Harpenden and Hertfordshire coats of arms. 3. TheWhite Lion at No. 28 High Street was a small Victorian pub, with decorative moulded bricks. The Perfect Pizza sign hangs from a bracket which once supported a model of a white lion, see left. 4. The Old Cock Inn has traces of a C17 timber-framed building and is more than likely the site of still earlier hostelries.

2. 72 High St - Another much altered C17 timber-frame structure lies behind the brick façade. It is believed to have formed part of an even earlier & larger group of hostelry buildings. It was the Old Red Lion in the early 1900s, and Rolts cycle & pram shop in the 1960s, until it was refurbished as shops in 1976. 60

Illustrations from the Local History Society archives. We have a large collection of photos of Harpenden and the surrounding area. 61

6. 73-75 High Street, at the corner of Sun Lane. A late C17 timber-framed structure, the end of which was demolished to widen Sun Lane in 1931. The remaining section was converted into shops in July 1955. The Sun pub was here from about 1637 until 1800 (or maybe 1877). It was owned by the Hawkins family in the 1780s. 7. 65-69 High Street. The C17 timber-framed cottages at 67 (The Limes) and 65, had early C18 wallpaintings imitating panelling, which were destroyed when the building was refurbished in the 1970s. In the 1850s No. 65 was Harpenden’s first post office. No. 69 (Tollgate Cottage/Hotel) was added in the 1870s.‘Tollgate’ refers to the barrier controlling traffic from Luton, just south of Sun Lane, when the Turnpike Trust was formed in 1743. 8. The Foresters Arms, a pub which has given its name to the 2012 housing development behind, became an off-licence, before conversion into an estate agency. The Foresters were a self-help charity founded in the early C19. 9. Bowers Parade was built in 1936 in the gardens of Bowers House, which still stands behind. Though a handsome parade, the fact that it concealed Bowers House was highly controversial at the time, which helped give birth to the Harpenden Society. 10. Cross Keys pub - formerly the White Hart.A much altered early C18 building. The innkeeper in 1830 was Henry Oldaker who moved to The Bull (The Old House, Leyton Road) and helped start regular horse racing on the Common in 1848. 62

11. Brewery House - built in 1871 as his home by James Mardall, who owned the Peacock Brewery (on the site of the Methodist Church), one of two breweries then in the High Street. In 1951 the house was sold and converted to shops (currently Harpenden Interiors and WH Smiths). 12. Vaughan Road was cut through in the 1890s, following the demolition of cottages in Lower High Street, with Pellants (clock makers/repairers) at the corner. Willmott’s grocery was replaced by the County & Westminster Bank (now NatWest).

13. Home Farm and Chestnut Cottage were pulled down in 1894 to build Ridley’s ironmongers’ shop at the Corner of Station Road (formerly Staker’s Lane) - now HSBC. 14. Harpenden Arms Hotel built as the Railway Hotel in 1870 by James Mardall (owner of the Peacock Brewery), the landlord in 1890 was Richard Longland, a wine and spirit dealer, corn and hay merchant, and proprietor of the Livery Stables behind the hotel further up Station Road. 63

Building a bond with your dog right from an early age is key to successful training. It is important to teach your dog to focus on you in a calm and rewarding way and training should be fun for both you and your dog. Modern dog trainers use treats, toys and lots of praise in order to get the behaviours required from their dogs. Let’s look at the ‘recall’ for example. All too often when we call our dogs it is for something that isn’t much fun like time to go home, stopping him playing with other dogs or going back on the lead. So not much incentive to come back to you! Try making the ‘recall’ into a fun game.

Offer treats, and a game when he comes back to you. Try hiding behind trees and other obstacles for him to come and find you. Make lots of fuss and then allow your dog to go off again and explore the environment. To help ensure you have a good ‘recall’ try practising using a long line. If you dog does not come first time of calling you will be able to reel him in and then praise and reward him thus being able to reinforce the behaviour. As with any training the 3 P’s. Practise, Patience and Perseverance! For more information on courses please call Susie of Leadership Dog Training on 07884 051313 or email: info@leadershipdogttaining.co.uk

2 0 1 4 Film Guide 2014 by Chris Jelf.

Gandhi Richard Attenborough spent 20 years getting Gandhi on the big screen, and its release was not anti-climatic in the slightest. Having studied Gandhi as part of my History degree at University, I hold somewhat of an interest into this incredible human beings desire to gain social equality and integration in Indian society, and the role he had in halting British Imperialism. Attenborough succeeded in displaying the spiritual, political and moral significance of Mahatma Gandhi. It is well known that during the many years Attenborough tried to undergo his Gandhi project, he had many high profile actors lined up to play Gandhi. Ben Kingsley was the final selection for the role, and he was relatively unknown in the release year of 1982. Kingsley adopted quite extreme measures to prepare himself for the role. In essence, he tried to live by Gandhi’s very basic philosophies of living – losing weight, spinning cotton etc. The one great irony of Gandhi’s life was that his concept of ‘satyagraha’ and peaceful non-resistance often lead to violence and factions.Attenborough and the huge supporting cast display this fantastically, with a masterpiece of a film. Its 8 Oscars display the extent of this film’s brilliance.

Goodfellas This is a film I have personally seen many times, will almost definitely see many times more, and highly recommend it to anybody who likes the style of director Martin Scorsese’s cinematic genius. Martin Scorsese has adapted the popular book ‘Wise Guy’ by Nicholas Pileggi, and combines it with his usual spin of Italian-American mafia charm, unpredictability and violence. Goodfellas is different to many of the other popular early gangster films, such asThe Godfather or Casino. Goodfellas is less of a story and more of an examination. Its purpose is to examine the relationships, mannerisms and dialogue of the people involved in a mad, violent and psychopathic sphere of organized crime. Scorsese has created a cast that is comprised of many gangster film ‘veterans’. This includes Robert DeNiro, Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci as the main body of the film. The story follows Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) as he progresses from a young age, through the ranks of the local Italian-American organized crime syndicate. His crimes get more serious, as the film and his rank progresses. Joe Pesci plays ‘Tommy’, an absolute lunatic determined to become a ‘Made Man’, and ‘Jimmy’ (Robert DeNiro), the repressive, but composed mastermind behind many of the crimes. Goodfellas was nominated for five Oscars, with Joe Pesci winning ‘Best actor in a supporting role’.This film is not for the faint hearted. It displays immorality, vice, and a psychotic life completely outside the law. 69

Health

STAYING SAFE IN It is important to protect your and your children’s skin in the sun to avoid sunburn and heat exhaustion. Here is some useful advice from the NHS to help us all stay safe in the sun this summer. What sun protection factor (SPF) should I use? Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. The higher the SPF, the better. Go for broad spectrum sunscreens, which protect against harmful UVA and UVB rays. Make sure the product is not past its expiry date; most sunscreens have a shelf life of two to three years. And don’t use little, it takes 9 teaspoons to cover an adult from head to toe… which is a lot more than most of us use. What is broad spectrum and the star-rating? Broad-spectrum products provide protection against the sun’s UVB and UVA rays. The sun protection factor, or SPF, is a measurement of the amount of UVB protection; the higher the number, the greater the protection. In the UK, UVA protection is measured with a star ratings; snscreens has from 0 to 5 stars. The higher the number of stars, the greater the protection.

How long can I stay in the sun? Don’t spend any longer in the sun than you would without sunscreen. Sunscreen should not be used as an excuse to stay out in the sun; instead, it offers protection when exposure is unavoidable. The summer sun is most damaging to your skin in the middle of the day so spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm, under umbrellas, trees, canopies or indoors. Should I reapply sunscreen if I swim? Water washes off sunscreen and the cooling effect of the water can make you think you’re not getting burned. Water also reflects UV rays, increasing your exposure; even “waterproof” sunscreens should be reapplied after going in the water. Are children more at risk of sunburn? Young skin is delicate and very easily damaged by the sun. Use at least a factor 15 sunscreen and choose a broad-spectrum brand that has a four or five-star rating. Apply it to areas not protected by clothing, such as the face, ears, feet and backs of hands. Choose sunscreens that are formulated for children and babies’ skin, as these are less likely to irritate their skin.

WHEATHAMPSTEAD’S BEST KEPT SECRET! I have driven past The Beautique in Wheathamstead many times over the years and assumed it was just a small Hairdressing salon. I was inside for the first time last week and what a surprise.... It’s like Dr Who’s Tardis! There are 3 really lovely “Beauty rooms” hidden from view.

When I was there I met Karen Keegan, the owner of The Beautique. Karen took over the salon a year ago and she showed me the changes she had made. “What a transformation!” was the comment one of her customers made. I also discovered that for 4 years prior to coming to Wheathamstead, Karen was working in the local area in a Redbourn salon. She is Champneys trained with Cidesco and Cibtac Beauty qualifications.Additionally, she is also fully professionally trained in specialist treatments with Nouveau Lashes, Bio Sculptue Gel nails and Dibi skin treatments. When I talked to Karen, she was very clear about what all customers at the Beautique should expect in 2014.

With the summer approaching we’re all hoping for good weather to come so we can enjoy lots of outdoor parties. How about inviting friends around for a World Cup Brazilian barbecue themed party with lots of delicious Brazilian food? ARROZ À GREGA- (Greek style rice)

Method

This is a delicious fancy rice that we love having in any type of gatherings in Brazil, whenever food is involved. People keep asking me why Greek style…and I have to say that I have no idea but that is how this dish is known in Brazil.

For the rice you can either use some left over if you have some already or you can cook it from scratch following the instruction on the pack.

Ingredients 4 cups cooked rice ½ cup of milk 1 chicken or vegetable stock cube 1 tablespoon butter 1 small onion, finely chopped 1 grated carrot 1 cup cheddar cheese, chopped or grated 1 cup chopped ham 1 red or yellow pepper, finely chopped ½ cup of cooked peas ½ cup raisins 1 tablespoon of parsley, chopped 1 tablespoon of spring onions, chopped 2 hard boiled eggs Salt & pepper to taste

First you need to heat the milk up and dissolve the stock cube on it. Set it aside. Put a large pan in medium heat and start by melting the butter. Add the onions and fry for two minutes. Add the carrots and raisins and fry for another two minutes. Add the rice and all other ingredients except the eggs. Give it a good mix and transfer to a serving dish. Slice the eggs and decorate the rice with them. It is now ready to serve. Bon Appetit! “Brazilian Barbecue Party Recipes” book is available for your Kindle. Visit www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00KOCU7M0 or alternatively go to Amazon Kindle and type the title of the book “Brazilian Barbecue Party Recipes” or the authors name “Carina Nugent”

Main Course Classic Coq au Vin

Prep: 24 hrs Cook: 3 hrs 50 min Serves: 2-3 Ingredients - Serves 4 • • • • • • • • • • • •

1 large free range chicken, jointed 1 bottle of red wine 1 sprig of thyme 1 bay leaf 1 stick of celery 1/2 a small leek 1 carrot 1 medium onion 2 cloves of garlic 12 small button mushrooms 100g of pancetta, cut into 1cm cubes 6-8 baby pearl onions or shallots

Method 1. Separate the thighs from the drumsticks and place in a suitably sized tub or zip-lock bag. Crush the garlic, then chop the carrot, celery, onion, and leek into rough 1cm dice and add everything to the chicken along with the wine, thyme and bay leaf. Leave in the fridge to marinate for 1 day. Put the chicken breasts aside for another recipe. Make a simple stock with carcass; crush slightly and snugly fit it into a medium-small pot.

Cover with cold water & slowly bring to the boil, skimming any scum that rises. Simmer gently for 3 hours, then strain & discard the bones. Reduce the stock by half, & place in the fridge until needed. 2. Heat the oven to 180C. Transfer the chicken & its marinade to a roasting tray, then bring to the boil on the stove top & simmer for 3 minutes to remove the alcohol. Place in the oven for about 45minutes, or until the meat is tender. 3. Meanwhile, heat a frying pan and cook the pancetta, onions & mushrooms over a high flame until nice & golden. Add the chicken stock to de-glaze, then simmer until the mushrooms & onions are just tender. Set aside. 4.When the chicken is cooked, remove from the tray and pat the skin dry with kitchen towel. Strain the braising liquid into a saucepan, add the chicken stock poured off the from the mushrooms & shallots pan. Bring to the boil and reduce by about two thirds, until it is dark and rich. Season to taste. 5. While the sauce is reducing, crisp the chicken skin; in a frying pan heat some oil over a medium-low flame and brown the chicken, being careful not to burn it. The skin should be dark and caramelised.Serve with the mushrooms, shallots, pancetta & sauce poured over.

Dessert

Chocolate Fondant Serves: 5 Prep: 25 mins Cook: 30 mins Extra time: 1 hr chilling Ingredients • 120g unsalted butter, diced, plus 20g melted for greasing • 2 tbsp cocoa powder • 120g dark chocolate, broken into pieces • 2 eggs and 2 egg yolks • 120g caster sugar • 1 tbsp plain flour, sifted • clotted cream or vanilla ice cream, to serve (optional)

Method 1. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6 and put a baking tray on the middle shelf. Brush the inside of 5 pudding moulds with the melted butter, then put the cocoa in one and turn it to coat the inside, holding it over the second mould to catch any that escapes. Repeat with the other moulds. 2. Put the butter and chocolate in a heatproof bowl, set over, but not touching, a pan of simmering water and stir occasionally until melted. Allow to cool slightly. 3. Using electric beaters, whisk together the whole eggs, yolks, sugar and a pinch of salt until pale and moussey this will take 3-4 mins. Gently fold in the melted chocolate and butter, and then the flour, being careful not to knock out too much air. Spoon into the prepared moulds, stopping just shy of the top. Chill for at least 1 hr. 4. Put on a hot baking tray and cook for 12-14 mins until the tops are set and coming away from the sides of the moulds. Stand for 30 secs, then serve in the moulds or turn.

Homes UK BUYERS WILLING TO PAY MORE THAN ASKING PRICE According to estate agents as the supply of homes continues to drop, more buyers than ever before are willing to pay more than the asking price to secure their dream property. The latest data from the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) shows that back in March the supply of housing on the market has fallen for the sixth consecutive month from an average of 57 properties in September 2013 to 42 in March 2014, almost a 10 year low.
The result of this is increased competition, with buyers prepared to offer more than the listed market price to secure a property. Some 19% of properties sold for more than the asking price in March, nearly three times the 7% recorded when the NAEA first collected this data in September 2013. With this willingness to pay more, NAEA member agents also reported an increase in the average number of sales agreed per branch, up from nine in February to 10 in March. It points out that although those looking to buy are serious purchasers, the average number of house hunters registering with NAEA agents dropped by 5% in March, down from an average of 331 house hunters in February to 313 in March. As the buyers face the realities of dwindling housing stock, the percentage of first time buyers purchasing a property fell from a four year high of 29% in February to 25% in March, showing the first signs of a struggle amidst a fast moving housing market.

Home owners were looking to upsize from their existing property in March with 50% of house hunters looking to do so, a marked increase from September 2013 when data was first collected showing only 32% of house hunters doing so. ‘The supply crisis continues to deepen, and the government must act now to offer house hunters hope in an increasingly congested market. Current conditions mean that in just a few months we’ve seen a large increase in the amount of people willing to offer over market price to secure homes,’ said Jan Hÿtch, president of National Association of Estate Agents.

? ? ? ? ? ‘Overall property sales may be up, but the proportion of first timers purchasing a property is down and with the significant changes that the Mortgage Market Review will bring just around the corner, we’ll be watching closely to see what kind of an impact is felt,’ she added. THE BEST WAY TO GET YOUR WINDOWS TO SPARKLE THIS

SUMMER!

An E-Cloth and Water You can’t beat an E-cloth for speed and results - use it with a spray bottle filled with water and see smudges and grime shift. For very dirty surfaces, you might need to use some water diluted with washing up liquid and applied with a sponge, then wiped and buffed dry with the E-Cloth.

The cloth itself contains lots of tiny fibres that pick up dirt. It’s also good at adding shine to stainless steel taps, hobs and sinks.

Vinegar, Water and Newspaper Dilute your vinegar with water (roughly 1:4) and use a lint-free cloth or chamois leather to clean off grime. For a really good shine, buff the windows with crumpled newspaper - or use the chamois or lint-free cloth.

The exterior of windows will almost certainly need more than diluted vinegar to come up clean. Diluted washing up liquid, ideally used with a sponge and squeegee; you can then buff them to a shine with newspaper (or your lint-free cloth).

Steam Cleaners The powerful jets of steam dissolve grease and dirt quickly and effortlessly (and also sterilise surfaces.) In order to clean windows you will need one with the appropriate attachments.

ROGUE TRADERS

Hertfordshire Trading Standards is advising residents to always say NO to traders who turn up uninvited on the doorstep. Rogue builders and gardeners often trick people into paying high prices for unnecessary or shoddy work and give false names and addresses. The following advice is given: • Only deal with callers by appointment • Always ask for ID and check it carefully • Keep front and back doors locked • Fit a door bar/chain and use it • Do not keep large sums of money in the home • Do not buy goods or services at the door • Don’t be a victim, say NO to doorstep callers. For the majority of contracts made at your home (both invited and uninvited visits), you will be entitled to a seven-day cooling-off period.

The trader should give you a cancellation notice explaining your rights, and he must not start work within the seven days without you requesting him to do so in writing. If the trader fails to comply then he is breaking the law and the contract is unenforceable against you, you don’t have to pay. If you need to have home improvements carried out, consider using a Trustmark-registered trader. www.hertdirect.org/trustmark or call Harpenden Directory on 01582 469117.

LOFT CONVERSION BOOSTS HOME VALUE BY A FIFTH

A new study shows that developing your attic can boost the value of your home by a fifth!

Home owners could boost the value of their property by 21% by adding a loft conversion, a study shows. According to research by the Nationwide Building Society putting in an attic room has been found to have the potential to add £37,000 to the value of a home, while just adding an extra bedroom can equate to an extra £20,000.

An extra bathroom could add £8,900 to the value of a home and boosting floor space by 10 per cent could add a similar amount. (Amounts, according to Nationwide’s price index, based on the national average house price of £178,124 in the first quarter of 2014.)

LOCAL COMPANY HAS SEEN THE LIGHT! I’m Ben Hobbs, owner and operator of Ultratech Blind Cleaning Services based in Hertfordshire.

We specialise in cleaning most types of blinds including venetians, verticals, wooden and rollerblinds using state of the art ultrasonic cleaning technology. I came up with the idea whilst on holiday in the USA a few years ago with my partner Jade. Blind cleaning was big business out there and frequently saw company vans, and adverts in the local papers. Having venetian blinds ourselves I was always frustrated how hard they were to clean; sometimes after cleaning with ordinary dusters I was still not satisfied with the results. After lots of research and training I decided to start my own company cleaning blinds. I invested £13,000 in the latest ultrasonic cleaning equipment, which not only removes dust and grime from your blinds; it also cleans the cords, tracks and ladders to which are the hardest parts to clean and impossible with dusters alone. We have a workshop based in Hemel Hempstead and offer a same day collection and drop off service for all our customers in Harpenden, Wheathampsted and Redbourn.

By having your blinds cleaned, it will improve the air quality at home or in your business as it removes allergens and bacteria that build up on the blinds over time. The ultrasonic cleaning system works by piezo electric transducers that are attached to the cleaning tank. They generate ultrasound waves that vibrate the cleaning fluid at very high velocity, creating a process called cavitation. Millions of tiny bubbles implode within the solution and penetrate into every orifice of the item being cleaned, removing dirt and grime within seconds. We only use environmentally friendly solutions to clean your blinds and we have been credited by the Green Achiever association. After your first initial call with us we will arrange a convenient date and time with yourselves to collect your blinds, take them to our workshop for cleaning then return and reinstall them on the very same day!

FINDING THE RIGHT SOLAR PANELS FOR YOU Choosing solar panels can seem confusing but in most cases, the choice can be made simple. The first thing to decide is what kind of energy would be most valuable – hot water or electricity and then try to rank; budget, power and aesthetics in order of priority. Solar thermal collectors are 80% efficient at turning sunshine into hot water and if you have a large family, it’s a fantastic technology.

The recently launched RHI adds a financial payment to the savings and there’s nothing better than bathing in water that has been heated by the sun. PV panels are less efficient (typically 15%) but electricity is considered a much higher grade of energy. The Feed in Tariff adds a considerable incentive and many systems can achieve a return on investment of 10-12%. High efficiency panels are useful if you want to achieve a powerful array on a small roof and modern ‘all-black’ panels can look great on tiled or slate roofs.

OPEN YOUR DOOR TO

COLOUR!

It’s the first thing people see when they approach your property, so make an impression with colour! Gone are the days of only being able to choose from a list of a few colours, now the world is your oyster with .... Blue - A blue front door signals that the homeowner views his or her home as a place of refuge -- calm, serene, and relaxing, the perfect retreat from an often harsh and demanding world. Green - Psychologically speaking, green signifies health, safety, tranquillity, and harmony, all highly desirable attributes for the home environment.

Black - A black front door projects strength, sophistication, power, and authority, indicating to all who enter or even passers-by that the home is a serious place inhabited by a person of substance. Red - By painting the front door red, the homeowner is saying that the home within is a vibrant place, full of life, energy, and excitement. Brown - A brown front door looks natural and organic, but it can send mixed messages in terms of colour psychology. On the one hand, brown conveys warmth, stability, and reliability, positive attributes all, but certain darker shades of brown signal a desire for privacy, even isolation.

JOBS IN THE GARDEN THIS SUMMER

Gardens

Taking cuttings is one of the great pleasures of summer gardening; you can propagate a wide range of plants at this time of the year for little or no cost. You’ve got nothing to lose, so sharpen your secateurs and get out in the garden! TYPES OF CUTTINGS Softwood cuttings are taken from actively growing new shoots, often root more quickly, but losses through wilting and rotting can be greater. Semi-ripe cuttings are taken from new shoots that have finished growing with fully developed leaves and a base that is starting to turn woody. Semi-ripe cuttings are easier to handle because and are more robust and less liable to wilt, but be patient as they often take longer to root.

Once early performers have finished flowering, many produce a flush of new growth. Those that don’t can be encouraged to do so by dead-heading, watering and feeding. Many early flowering herbaceous plants produce new shoots from the base, which make ideal material for summer cuttings. Spreading types tend to produce new growth from existing shoots, which can also be used to make cuttings. In either case, each cutting needs to be 10-15cm long

HERBACEOUS PLANTS

Plants that flower during late summer or early autumn can be propagated now from stem cuttings taken from the thrusting new shoots.

Although advice is to take cuttings from herbaceous plants in spring as new shoots are produced, they will root just as well from cuttings taken during the summer.

Normally, just the tip of the stem is used, but with a few easy-to-root subjects, such as phlox and sedum, you can use sections of the stem as well. Continued on page 124

JOBS IN THE

GARDEN THIS SUMMER

Continued from page 123 SHRUBS Most shrubs are easy to root from cuttings taken at this time of the year. However, it is a common misunderstanding that shrubs have to be propagated from semi-ripe cuttings. In fact, many root more easily from softwood cuttings, but you must not allow them to wilt. Most shrubs can be propagated from the nonflowering shoot tip, cutting just below a leaf joint and removing the lower leaves.

CLIMBERS Climbers tend to produce shoots with long stems between leaf joints; this means that preparing stem tip and leaf bud cuttings are the most practical ways of propagating most climbers. Many popular climbers, including clematis, jasmine and honeysuckle, also produce side shoots from horizontally trained stems that can be used to make semi-ripe cuttings - trimming the cutting at the point it joins last year’s growth.

The prepared cutting should be 10-15cm long depending on the type of growth. Very easy-to-root shrubs, such as artemesia and buddleja, can be rooted from cuttings taken part-way down the stem as well. You will get better results from some shrubs, including deciduous azaleas, ceratostigma, chaenomeles, genista, lavender, pieris, sage, viburnum and weigela, taking semi-ripe cuttings trimmed from the point it joins last year’s growth. A few shrubs, including camellia, fatsia and mahonia, root better from leaf-bud cuttings - this is a mid-stem cutting trimmed just above a leaf joint with a short piece of stem, about 5cm long, below it.

How to Improve Curb A ppeal Home Selling Advice to Help You Attract Potential Buyers. A large percentage of home buyers decide whether or not to look inside a house or take it seriously based on its curb appeal—the view they see when they drive by or arrive for a showing. You can help make sure they want to come inside your house by spending some time working on the its exterior appearance.

Park where a potential buyer would and walk towards the house, looking around you as if it were your first visit. Is the approach clean and tidy? What could you do to make it more attractive? Take photos of the home’s exterior. If you have a digital camera, view the colour versions first, then remove the colour and look at it in black and white, because it’s easier to see problems when colour isn’t around to affect our senses.

Bespoke Metalwork It’s difficult to look at our own house in the same way that potential home buyers do, because when we become accustomed to the way something looks and functions, we can’t see its faults. Decide right now to stop thinking of the property as a home. It’s a house—a commodity you want to sell for the highest price possible. Curb Appeal Exercise The next time you come home, stop across the street or far enough down the driveway to get a good view of the house and its surroundings. 1. What is your first impression of the house and yard area? 2. What are the best exterior features of your house ? How can you enhance them? 3. What are the worst exterior features of the house? How can you minimize or improve them?
