:HDWKHU 7R )O\ THE SWINGLE SINGERS The Swingle Singers are thrilled to release "Weather To Fly," the group's first full-length album since 2009. An electrifying set that reflects the excitement of their current show, "Weather To Fly" captures the best of the group’s a cappella repertoire. “This is, quite simply, the album our audiences have asked for after every performance,” says bass singer Edward Randell. Based in London and touring on four continents in 2013, The Swingle Singers have assembled some of their favourite music from home and abroad. All-vocal arrangements of songs from Turkey, Spain and Argentina sit alongside reimagined British pop from Elbow, Florence Welch and The Beatles. For half a century, The Swingle Singers have pushed the boundaries of what the human voice can achieve. Their vocal agility and blend, combined with captivating showmanship, have thrilled audiences across the globe. Celebrating their 50th anniversary in the 2013-14 season, today’s young and gifted Swingle Singers represent the group’s evolution from baroque jazz pioneers to contemporary a cappella phenomenon.

The group’s history is a remarkable tale of renewal. In 1963, American-born Ward Swingle assembled a group of Parisian session singers to sing Bach’s keyboard music. The resulting album, Jazz Sebastian Bach, launched The Swingle Singers to fame. Over five decades the group has sustained a level of international popularity beyond its founder’s wildest dreams, with each new singer bringing something fresh to the Swingle sound. The Swingle Singers have sung on the world’s most famous stages, from Ronnie Scott’s to La Scala. They have won 5 Grammy Awards, featured on the soundtracks of Sex and the City and Glee, and made over 50 recordings.

6L[ )RU 6L[ KENNY WHEELER Kenny Wheeler convened an all-star British band for this new album, recorded back in April 2008 at Bauer Studios in Ludwigsburg, Germany. For the occasion, the Canadian-born, English by adoption, trumpet and flugelhorn player lined up Stan Sulzmann, on tenor and soprano sax, Bobby Wellins on tenor sax, John Taylor on piano, Chris Laurence on double bass and Martin France on drums. This is a Kenny Wheeler, who, at the time of the recording, was almost 80 years old and yet still brilliant and elegant. The album opens with a classic “call and response, with wind and brass pursuing each other, calling to each other and interacting (“Seven, Eight, Nine - Part 1 is the title of the track, the first of eight, all penned by the leader). After this we hear clear reference to music by Miles or arrangements by Gil Evans, with a Wheeler who puts himself on a par with as his recording colleagues, choosing to not set himself up in a soloist role, but also not remain in the background, to let the others improvise on his themes.

9RRGRR 6HQVH JOACHIM KUHN TRIO inviting ARCHIE SHEPP Whether playing together with greats of classical jazz such as Stan Getz, Joe Henderson and Michael Brecker, with American and European members of the avant-garde such as Ornette Coleman, Michel Portal and his own brother Rolf Kühn, with world musicians like Rabih Abou-Khalil, young tearaways like Michael Wollny and Adam Baldych or even in a highly reputed Bach project with the St. Thomas Boys' Choir of Leipzig, whether performing solo or in a big band – Joachim Kühn loves surprising encounters. This love is reinforced by his new ACT album "Voodoo Sense", on which he once again acts as a catalyst, bringing together people and their music that had previously inhabited entirely different spheres and in doing so fusing together the past, present and future. Old sparring partner Archie Shepp plays on three tracks and a hand-picked team of African percussionists and singers joins the trio of Kuhn, the Moroccan guembri, oud virtuoso and vocalist Majid Bekkas, and the Spanish percussionist and drummer Ramon Lopez. Highly expressive, expansive solo improvisations join with the power of lumbering Afro-Arabic rhythms, giving rise to a new, trance-like jazz.

Sketches of Ethiopia MULATU ASTATKE Mulatu Astatke, on his first album for Jazz Village, bears witness to an extraordinarily rich career, that has seen him hailed as the father of Ethio-jazz. From his musical studies at Trinity College, London, and Berklee College of Music, Boston, through groundbreaking recordings for the legendary Amha label during Addis Ababa’s musical golden age, to his contribution to the Jim Jarmush film Broken Flowers which assured him of cult status amongst savvy music fans, Astatke has a unique musical history. His new album, Sketches of Ethiopia, brings to mind the great arrangements of Gil Evans and late Ellingtonian tone poems and is an homage to the rhythms and dances of Mulatu’s homeland that still provide the engine for his music. It also demonstrates that the grand old man of Ethio-jazz is not standing still. Still finding new ways to express his music, he’s brought together a top team of the UK’s young jazz talent, some of the finest new Ethiopian voices and the unique vocal talents of Malian diva Fatoumata Diawara to create the strongest album of his late flowering.

Yo LP ROBERTO FONSECA DOUBLE 180G VINYL EDITION WITH BONUS TRACK Roberto Fonseca is one of the most charismatic Cuban musicians of his generation. The Buena Vista Social Club prodigy and Havana Cultura star has grabbed Cuban music by the horns and drawn it, hot, stylish and sultry, into the 21st century. In place of his usual jazz quintet, with Yo Fonseca develops a union between electro and analogue, African instruments and Hammond organs, all together combined in a synthesis of Afro-Cuban groove and Griot tradition. As for his relationship to Africa, and to the Yoruba culture in particular, it plays an integral part in his family heritage. A connection which the pianist has chosen to deepen by inviting numerous African musicians to perform at his side, including Baba Sissoko, Sekou Kouyate and Fatoumata Diawara.

Searching for Jupiter MAGNUS ÖSTRÖM It took two years for Magnus Öström to find his way back to music after the tragic death of his friend Esbjorn Svensson, and to bring out his first own album: "Thread of Life". Öström now presents his follow-up "Searching For Jupiter". His loss is still palpable in heavy, yearning tracks like "Mary Jane Doesn't Live Here Anymore" or "Hour Of The Wolf", but Öström has taken some decisive steps forward: He now has a strong and tight band together with guitarist Andreas Hourdakis, bassist Thobias Gabrielson and pianist Daniel Karlsson. They have rigorously pursued a jazz rock and progressive rock leaning - "The Moon (And The Air It Moves)", for example, is reminiscent of Pink Floyd not only in name, and there is more optimism again: Melodies once again play an important role ("Dancing At The Dutchtreat"), even major-key cheerfulness shines through from time to time ("Happy And The Fall"), and the album ends with an anthem of hope with "At The End Of Eternity".

5XQQLQJ JULIAN & ROMAN WASSERFUHR With their fourth album "Running", the Brothers Wasserfuhr are now definitely standing on their own four feet. It has turned out to be their most personal album, they themselves were responsible for most of the compositions, recording and production. That they decided to take that risk bears witness to the astounding maturity that these two musicians have already acquired despite their young ages. On "Running", Julian and Roman Wasserfuhr call on the young musicians of the Cologne scene, who they also play their live gigs with. Bassist Benjamin Garcia Alonso and drummer Oliver Rehmann were important factors in making "Running", an album on which all pieces of the jigsaw puzzle fit. Strings here and there, father Gerald Wasserfuhr on the clarinet and the young vocalist David Rynkowski complete the line-up.

Teamwork LP NILS LANDGREN FUNK UNIT DOUBLE 180G VINYL EDITION This might well be the best Funk Unit that Nils Landgren has gathered around him since 2010: technically outstanding, this is a group of team players who combine well with a great groove connection. James Brown meets Parliament meets Crusaders meets Funk Unit: that's one way you could describe the musical concept on "Teamwork". It is pure party feeling, the notes whirl coolly through the ranks, superb horn sets alternate with ecstatic solos, dance beats, smooth vocals and strong melodies, but there is also time for elegance and heartfelt blues. 7KH %RQHV RI $UW STEVE TURRE Steve Turre recalls, “when I was ten years old, I wanted to play violin. My dad said, 'Beginning violin sounds like a cat in the alley. Pick a horn.'” It is probably safe to say that the jazz world has been immeasurably enriched because of the senior Mr. Turre's dislike of the violin. His son, Steve, has won any number of Downbeat Critic's and Reader's Polls and has been a fixture in the SNL TV band for nearly thirty years. He has, almost single-handedly squashed the trumpet-saxophone front line monopoly and has circumnavigated the globe several times with his most recent forays overseas taking him to Russia and South Africa. Here Steve has assembled a completely unique ensemble including three other trombone-playing Art Blakey alumni. (Get it? The Bones of “Art”?) With Steve Davis, Frank Lacy and Robin Eubanks, Steve and company give ample testimony to the fact that the golden age of the trombone is now and put on display the many moods and capabilities of perhaps the noblest instrument in jazz.

7KH &RQQHFWLRQ RAY MANTILLA One would be hard-pressed to name a working jazz musician who has played with a longer list of great artists than Ray Mantilla. Beginning his career in the 1950s with Latin music greats such as Xavier Cugat and Monguito Conjunto, Ray has played with such wildly diverse personalities as Eartha Kitt, Freddie Hubbard, Larry Coryell, Morgana King, Gato Barbieri, Cedar Walton, Michael Urbaniak, Kenny Burrell, Shirley Scott and countless others. Together with Max Roach, he was a founding member of the popular percussion ensemble M'Boom. Here on The Connection, Mantilla has taken his decades of experience in music and synthesized it into a language which encompasses the best of all genres while never quite leaving his Latin roots and heritage. With a band made up of long-time colleagues Ray rips through an imaginative program of originals and standards where the Latin beats are tinged with echoes of Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Spain and Ray's own Nuyorican roots. Employing a two-horn front line (trombone and tenor saxophone), the group’s sound was rooted in hard bop, with an emphasis on R&B and soul. They would shorten their name to “The Crusaders” in 1971, when they decided to adopt a jazz-funk style. A long alternate take of “M.J.S. Calderazzo continues to perform as a solo pianist, at the head of his trio, and as a member of the Branford Marsalis Quartet.

Infinite Possibility JOEL HARRISON The most intriguing artists are those that continually seek new challenges. They grow and adapt. Guitarist/composer Joel Harrison is a musician who is never complacent, continually learning, yet always true to his own vision. Infinite Possibility is Harrison's latest journey, compositions written for a 19 piece jazz orchestra. Like all of Harrison’s output, the music is at once contemporary and timeless. The recording begins with “As We Gather All Around Her,” which is based on an Appalachian hymn Harrison had heard Stanley Brothers do, and features a startling vocal from Everett Bradley. The haunting then rollicking “Dockery Farm” is inspired by Harrison’s trips to the Mississippi plantation where Charlie Patton and Howlin’ Wolf learned the blues. There is a wonderful moment in the middle where the three trombones and tuba freely improvise with Harrison, playful and mournful all at once. “Remember” is both tender and barbed, a tone poem with no improvisation, featuring vocalist Liala Biali.

“The Overwhelming Infinity of Possibility” is a bright, hopeful piece that begins with muted energy and builds to a raucous density, inspired by the works of György Ligeti and electric Miles Davis. The declaratory “Highway” is an inspiring, rich piece based on gospel and road song. The program concludes with “Blue Lake Morning,” a shimmering, warm piece that flowers with Harrison’s blend of classical harmony and roots songcraft. Track listing: 1. Hush Point HUSH POINT John McNeil / Jeremy Udden / Aryeh Kobrinsky / Vinnie Sperrazza It takes time to develop a deep rapport within a jazz ensemble. Often in today's jazz community, this is not seen as cost effective, and as a result, jazz has become a scene of one-off gigs with minimal preparation and everyone reading the music. Fortunately, you can still find bands that invest the time to evolve as a unit. Trumpeter John McNeil and saxophonist Jeremy Udden established Hush Point as a group that does just that. Also including bassist Aryeh Kobrinsky and drummer Vinnie Sperrazza, Hush Point is a working and rehearsing ensemble, and on their new self-titled album, Hush Point, the group shows a cohesiveness of concept that is only achieved through hours of practice, performance and experimentation. The wide stylistic range of their repertoire is immediately striking to the listener.

"It’s an album of dry and intimate and surprising music, much of it a kind of X-rayed blues language, volume cut in half, swing rhythm subtly stretched into more up-to-date grooves, emotional dynamics present but suppressed. Nameless Neighbors NICK SANDERS TRIO Music impacts life. Life impacts music. For jazz pianist Nick Sanders, his life experiences and his musical influences have converged in a perfect storm, creating a truly fresh musical voice – wholly original yet clearly shaped by the masters he has studied and embraced. His unique sound is profound, soulful and rich, resonating with the moody isolation that characterizes so much of modern life, yet also with our deep yearning for human connection … both sentiments clearly expressed on his debut recording for Sunnyside Records, Nameless Neighbors. Nick Sanders was raised in New Orleans, Louisiana and currently lives in New York City. He holds a Master of Music degree in Jazz Performance from The New England Conservatory. In 2010, 2011 and 2012, he won the Marion and Eubie Blake International Piano Award for performance excellence of traditional American music. “In these days of cookie-cutter pianists, Nick Sanders is a true original. He is already a world-class pianist – and an intriguing and quirky composer as well.” FRED HERSCH (Producer)

Ochumare YILIAN CAÑIZARES Yilian, a child prodigy, studied at home, in a capital which is a crossroads. Then she set off for Caracas: the orchestra, symphonies, meticulously learning the violin, an instrument that likes to rebel. She made her own destiny, far away from her people, ending up in Switzerland to perfect her arpeggios. Strangely enough, it was here, right in the middle of Protestant Europe, that she founded a quartet named after a Yoruba divinity: Ochumare. Ever since then, they’ve been doing their best to reactivate the hybridised power of Latino jazz, by mixing in everything that, directly or indirectly, has been through their hands.

A percussionist from Lausanne, Cyril Regamey, who everyone believes must be concealing his Caribbean origins. A Cuban pianist, Abel Marcel, admired by Chucho Valdés, who brings together in a cadence heritages drawn from French impressionism and Black witch doctors. A Venezuelan bass player, David Brito, who has given his instrument a woman’s name; he anchors the group with his thirst for syncopations. And in the middle of these three guys, imperturbably, Yilian Cañizares doesn’t remain content with dispensing sweetness and light. SERGE GAINSBOURG Gainsbourg charmed us and repelled us, which made him a familiar enigma, a dazzling mystery. Gainsbourg is almost unique in French music. Only he and Léo Ferré developed their own texts and their arrangements to such an extent. Serge Gainsbourg wrote and composed not as an author or a musician would, but like a painter. He used words, notes and instruments as he would have done colours and paintbrushes. Light or dark, gentle, cynical, wild with excitement, pastel, bright, warm or cold, peaceful or violent, his poetic images are impressed upon us.

Chansons Réalistes Le Siècle D'Or

BORIS VIAN Boris Vian, novelist, poet, song-writer, performer, did not have the time to enjoy his moment in the sun. It was not until, and partly because, he died aged just 39, that his songs began their inexorable rise to immortality. Le Déserteur was sung by all the pacifists on earth (Joan Baez and Peter Paul & Mary, among others), just like La Java des bombes atomiques, this time given a touch of humour. In France, he inspired various artists such as Jacques Higelin, and above all, Serge Gainsbourg, who always claimed Vian was his main source of inspiration. The small selection of songs presented here, whether they are sung by Vian himself or other performers, demonstrate his incredible modernity, as if their author (and perhaps therein lies the rub) was very much ahead of his time.

Nowadays the sevillana is danced at ferias (annual local festivals) or during romerias (religious pilgrimages) in Spain (Seville, Jerez, Barcelona, etc.), but also in southern France (Arles, Nîmes, Dax, Mauguio, Béziers etc). Twenty pieces are presented on this album, each one chosen for its authenticity and for the impact and meaning of its words (letras). Laurent Maltinti, known as ‘El Tempranillo’, is a singer and guitarist of Italian origin, who now lives in Provence, where he is also well known for the wines he produces. ‘El Tempranillo’ is well-known in the flamenco world for his strong, mature voice and his unusual flamenco guitar technique (toque).
