Metamorphosis BARTÓK String Quartet No.4 LIGETI String Quartet No.1 “Métamorphoses nocturnes” KURTAG 12 Mikroludien Cuarteto Casals harmonia mundi • HMC 902062

Hk948 1c(^ #@ZP Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

It is often said that the essence of classical music lies in the principle of variation. However, when constant transformation of the musical material drives scores like these quartets by three eminent Hungarian composers of the 20th century, the resulting sonic impressions are very different. The governing principle here is metamorphosis, an idea as dear to Bartók as it was to the compatriots who succeeded him. On this fascinating CD, Cuarteto Casals offers a persuasive case for both concept and execution of this modernist compositional style.

This fascinating new collection from Westminster Abbey features music one might hear at the Abbey on its patronal feast day, that of St Peter the Apostle, which falls on 29 June. The program broadly follows the structure of the three major choral services of the Anglican tradition, all of which can in turn be traced back to the worship familiar in the pre-Reformation period when the Abbey was a Benedictine monastery — Matins (or Morning Prayer), Eucharist (Mass) and Evensong (Evening Prayer). The two principal musical elements are William Byrd’s Mass for five voices, and, linking the morning and evening Offices, four movements from Charles Villiers Stanford’s Service in B flat. Also featured is Walton’s choral masterpiece The Twelve. The Choir of Westminster Abbey sings with its usual full-throated joy, expertly directed by James O’Donnell.

Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Howard Shelley (piano) Hyperion • CDA 67765

Aa34571c!& ^%[Q Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

Hyperion’s Romantic Piano Concerto series continues to surprise and delight with a 51st disc of 19th century pianistic splendor. This release includes works by Wilhelm Taubert and Jacob Rosenhain. Both were near exact contemporaries with Mendelssohn, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Wagner and Verdi. Nearly half a century separates Taubert’s two concertos. The second reflects developments in the areas of harmonic expansion, cyclic development, and, of course, increased virtuosity. It was described by Schumann as ‘one of the best’ and he noted the parallels between it and Mendelssohn’s Op.25. Rosenhain wrote two works for piano and orchestra — a Concertino (probably written in the 1840s), and the concerto included on this disc. Although fairly conservative in its form, there is much gorgeous and masterful music here. Howard Shelley directs the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra from the piano; a partnership that has garnered the highest praise for their previous Hyperion recordings.

Aa34571c!&*#^XN Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

Francisco Guerrero was born in 1528 in Seville, Spain. A child prodigy, he was appointed maestro de capilla at Jaén Cathedral at the age of 17. Guerrero was much in demand as both a singer and composer and established an exceptional reputation well before his thirtieth birthday. Unlike most of the Spanish Renaissance composers, Guerrero lived and worked most of his life in Spain and his works remained popular for hundreds of years, especially in cathedrals in Latin America. The main work on this disc is the gloriously sunny and joyful Missa Congratulamini mihi, Motets. Based on an Easter motet by Crecquillion (also recorded here), it is full of the exuberance of the Paschal season. Also included are a selection of Easter motets. Voluptuous performances by Andrew Carwood’s award-winning Cardinall’s Musick shed new light on these rare gems of the Renaissance.

Schubert: Fantasy in C

Acclaimed Dutch cellist Pieter Wispelwey presents a disc of works written for and dedicated to the great Mstislav Rostropovich. The Cello Symphony marked Benjamin Britten’s return to symphonic writing after a period dominated by the composition of operas and vocal music. The work’s title refers to the democratic sharing of musical material between cello and orchestra. It is the largest concert work from Britten’s later years, and provides ample evidence of the composer’s mature mastery of structure and symphonic thinking. The Cello Suites were the first solo instrumental music that Britten wrote for Rostropovich. Inspired by hearing Slava play Bach, Britten originally planned to write six suites, but only three were completed before the composer’s death. Britten’s first suite was composed at the end of 1964 and is comprised of nine movements, played without pause.

The combination has proven commercially potent in Europe, and given the attraction of Steve Reich and the other minimalists among aficionados of electronic music on the pop side, it is surprising more composers haven’t explored the combination. Live in Berlin mostly draws on material from Einaudi’s album Divenire, which is scored for piano and orchestra. The album shows that this composer’s studio-oriented sound can be effectively transferred to a live setting. The music, with its waves of arpeggiated piano chords, evokes the sparse structures of early minimalism. However its romantic lyricism, combined with the rich sonic textures and firm rhythmic backbone of the electronics, creates a mood and style that are unique and powerfully compelling.

Hk948 1c(!^@ VL Price Code: A22 (Suggested Retail Price: $22.98)

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD In commemoration of Robert Schumann’ bicentennial, the Prazák Quartet is joined by the Russian pianist Evgeni Koroliov to reproduce a concert given in January of 1843 at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig by Clara Schumann and Ferdinand David’s quartet. On that date, Schumann’s String Quartet in A minor and the Piano Quintet received their première performances. These two paragons of musical Romanticism provided inspiration to a generation of composers including Brahms, Dvorak, Franck, Liszt and Tchaikovsky.

Sydney Symphony Orchestra, NWDR-Sinfonieorchester, Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt Tahra • TAH 698

Between 1952 and 1973, conductor Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt made over forty-five recordings with the Orchestra of Radio Hamburg for eight different recording companies and many have been reissued on CD. On the other hand, curiously, his Telefunken recordings (made between 1953-1959) have never been issued on CD until now. It is a rediscovery to which Tahra have added a very rare live recording that Schmidt-Isserstedt recorded on tour in Australia in 1956 with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. The original recordings have undergone careful restoration and remain a shining example of Telefunken’s excellent recording technique.

Friedrich Wührer (piano) Tahra • TAH 704

August 2010

This new set from Tahra dedicated to the great Austrian pianist and teacher Friedrich Wührer is the first release in a new series called “Back from the Shadows,” the aim of which is to give a second life to recordings by artists that are unjustly forgotten. Wührer was a close associate of and advocate for composer Franz Schmidt. He also was a champion of the second Viennese school and other composers of the early 20th century. His recorded legacy, however, centers around German romantic literature, particularly the music of Franz Schubert. This set is entirely dedicated to Beethoven and includes the complete piano concertos, the triple concerto and the last three piano sonatas.

Inspired by Rachmaninov’s Vespers and the great anthems written for the Russian Orthodox Church, Shchedrin composed The Sealed Angel, a Russian liturgy scored for mixed choir, soloists, two boy’s voices and flute, in 1988. Based on sacred texts and an 1872 short story by Nikolai Leskov, it tells the tale of a group of people in 18th-century Russia who belonged to a sect called the Old Believers. Leskov’s text is read to the audience interspersed with nine choral anthems and the solo flute represents the spirit of a holy icon that is central to the story. On this new recording, Maris Sirmais leads the Latvian State Choir in a particularly moving performance of a remarkable work.

This CD takes us on a foray into the land of shadows — its compositions make remarkable use of light and shadow effects while simultaneously recalibrating the relationship between ensemble and soloist in unique ways. Michael Jarrell’s violin concerto refracts the solo instrument’s line through the prism of the ensemble. Stefano Gervasoni’s concerto for double bass is like a dream full of odd sound forms — until the alarm goes off. Taking an (early-morning) look in the mirror, the solo flute in Durand’s Ombre/Miroir finds itself still faced with shadowy creatures as well. In Brian Ferneyhough’s Shadowtime VI, the angel of history appears and in verses by poet Charles Bernstein, he shows his gloomy face.

— THE OBSERVER

26

File In: World / Senegal Carlou D is an outspoken singer, songwriter and an exceptional guitarist who emerged out of Senegal’s exciting hip-hop scene of the 90s. As a young adult Carlou joined Senegal’s first, and arguably most successful, hip-hop group, Positive Black Soul. In 2004, after having performed with the band worldwide, he left to start his solo career. Instantly recognizable in his traditional Muslim robes with his dreadlocks signaling asceticism, he wears the image of Cheikh Ibra Fall around his neck as a tribute to his spiritual guide. It is from the leader of this spiritual sect, the Baay Fall, that Carlou takes much of his musical inspiration, preserving and modernizing the chants, melodies and rhythms used in celebration of this man who has millions of followers around the world. With a pure voice and infectious sense of rhythm, and backed by a scintillating band, Carlou D’s international debut album Muzikr is destined to make him one of Senegal’s next great musical exports. This is electric, spiritual roots music, straight from Dakar’s ripe music scene. The album features Carlou’s mentor Youssou N’Dour as special guest singer on the track “Goree.”

Hk948 1c(%!)@YO Price Code: A18 (Suggested Retail Price: $18.98)

File In: World / Collections With its different moods — sensuous, soft, bewitching — the magic of In the Wake of the Phoenicians resembles a journey of initiation. Each port of call is the pretext for a different stage in the development of the musical itinerary, a metaphor of eternal landscapes, a pictorial allegory painted by a contemporary artist using ancient colors with a futurist varnish. Sometimes a chant rises like a muezzin’s prayer or a siren’s song, or a touch of flamenco or a Sardinian motif suddenly emerges mischievously, then a swaying rhythm appears before vanishing into the swirls of the synthesizers. By mixing ancient and modern, eminently contemporary electronic sounds with traditional instruments and vocals, DJ Milan plays with every shade of blue in the Mediterranean; this music is the soundtrack of a luxury cruise that touches on the universal.

His unique style was the forerunner of what we now call ‘world music.’ Dibango is perhaps best remembered for his 1972 afrobeat single “Soul Makossa,” often considered the first disco record. This new best-of collection from Frémeaux features twelve tracks released between 1978 and 1989, including the 1978 Kingston remix of “Reggae Makossa.” Guest artists include Michael and Randy Brecker, Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare.

Although the Patrick Favre Trio is not yet well-known in the US, their playing is tight and this selection of nine original tunes, all composed by Favre, should bring them well-deserved attention in the American media.

Django’s Works offers a selection of the master’s finest tunes. Reedman Michel Portal’s legendary album Turbulence from 1987 makes a welcome return to the active catalog. Portal is considered a father figure of the French modern jazz scene. This album combines a kaleidoscope of sounds and influences into one of the most fascinating (and well-recorded) jazz albums ever released.
