Last year, local non-profit groups, raised more than $20,000 for their organizations at the festival. This statistic has been consistent over the years the festival has transitioned from up in town to down around the center. The impact this is having on our community continues to be positive. More than 63 percent

of our vendors this year are from Harlan County, so much of the money that is spent here at the festival will stay here. We will have a record number of vendors this year! The Harlan County Fiscal Court is committed to the sustainability of this festival. It’s one of the oldest in Kentucky. I appreciate magistrates Clark Sparky Middleton, Bill Moore, David Kennedy, Jim Roddy and James Howard for approving funding for this wonderful festival. I encourage you to thank your magistrates and tell them how much you enjoy the festival. We also sincerely appreciate all of our corporate sponsors who put forth their resources to provide more entertainment, activities, and promotion of the Poke Sallet Festival. The financial support put forth by these fine businesses and organizations truly shows their commitment to the festival and to all of us in the community who enjoy it. They are listed in the center of this tab. I would also like to thank Mayor Howard, the Harlan City Council, Harlan Tourist Commission, and Harlan Police Department for accommodating us on their properties during the festival. I want to thank my outstanding staff and the festival steering committee for helping me again this year with this major undertaking. Without all of their help, the festival would not be a success. This festival will provide plenty of fun for the entire family again this year! I hope you enjoy it and we look forward to seeing you there!

POKE SALLET FESTIVAL

Spirit of tradition, nod to our roots As co-coordinator of the 63rd annual Poke Sallet Festival, I am thrilled to present to you Harlan Countians, you out-oftowners, you Poke Sallet fanatics and you casual festival goers alike anBrandon other great year of family Pennington fun in downtown Harlan! Harlan Tourism This festival has grown Executive Director/ and evolved since its conFestival Co-Coorception and it has moved dinator locations a few different times throughout the years, however, one thing remains true to this day: Poke Sallet Festival is uniquely Harlan County. In my duration as Executive Director of Harlan Tourism, I cannot count on one hand how many times I have been posed the question, “What is Poke Sallet?” Of course, I give the traditional answer being that Poke Sallet is a poisonous leafy green weed that’s indigenous in much of North America but in the South, and especially Appalachia, it’s a delicacy that has been foraged and eaten as a vegetable for centuries. However, there’s another answer that I find to be much more meaningful, impactful, and, truthfully, special. Poke Sallet is a symbol and a spirit here in Harlan County. It’s a symbol of community that binds us to our culture, our people, and our language. It’s a spirit of tradition and a nod to our Appalachian roots. That is reason to celebrate. That is reason to come together as a community and throw a festival in

the name of Poke! The steering committee for the festival has been hard at work to make this the most special festival yet. All of your favorite attractions will be returning, which includes the carnival, the Sue Ford Memorial Car Show, music throughout the day, inflatables, games, the Run for the Hills 5K, the Miss Harlan County Pageant on Thursday night, and so much more. You will once again be able to see festival goers soar across

a zipline that spans the concert area thanks to the Black Mountain Thunder Zipline. Our carnival will return with all of your favorite rides and possibly some new additions! We are extremely excited to have the contemporary Christian band, Sidewalk Prophets to headline our Thursday night, the supremely talented indie folk up-and-comer EmiSunshine to play the main stage on Friday, and American Idol’s latest winner Trent Harmon on Saturday. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the impact that the Poke Sallet Festival has

within our community. First and foremost, you will find that over 60 percent of our vendors are from Harlan County. By partaking in this festival, you are keeping Harlan County dollars in Harlan County. You are also helping local families take care of their families by playing their games and buying their products. You are helping a local church raise money for their congregation, schools raise money for their teams and clubs, and local nonprofits continue their services.

val for without their commitment there would be no Poke Sallet Festival nor a trickle-down effect to our families, our businesses, our restaurants, our charities, and so on. First and foremost, thank you to Dan Mosley and the Harlan County Fiscal Court for your commitment to Harlan County and the festival. I can confidently say that your generosity in presenting the festival does not go unnoticed by the community. Thank you for also affording me the opportunity to co-coordinate the festival as well. It has been a wonderful experience and one in which I hope to continue. Thank you to all of our corporate sponsors who have also committed to the festival. Your commitment allows us the opportunity to bring quality entertainment at affordable prices (if not free!) for all of Harlan County. This is especially critical within Harlan County with the current economy. Thank you to the mayor of Harlan Enterprise File Photo and all of the departments of the city of Harlan for donating your services and Secondly, in terms of tourism, this festi- property for the duration of the festival brings many out-of-owners into our val. Finally, thank you to the Poke Sallet community that partake in the festival, Festival Steering Committee. The team that shop at our stores, that buy gas at that makes up the steering committee is our gas stations, eat at our restaurants, one that is dedicated, hardworking, and and stay at our hotels. These visitors to works nonstop before, during, and after our beautiful mountain hometown bring Poke Sallet to protect the integrity of the money and tax dollars to our communi- festival, provide a safe and fun environty so be sure to invite all of your out of ment for the entire community, and entown family and friends to join us in all sure that the festival is a major success! of the uniquely Harlan County fun and I know I speak for us all when I say we cannot wait for you to see what we have festivities! Lastly, I would like to take a moment planned and welcome to the 63rd Annuto thank all of our sponsors for the festi- al Poke Sallet Festival of Harlan County!

Trent Harmon headlines main stage Saturday Big Machine recording artist Trent Harmon and season 15 winner of American Idol will take the main stage Saturday at 9 p.m. for the 63rd annual Poke Sallet Festival in downtown Harlan. He achieved Top 15 success with his first single “There’s a Girl.” Trent ’s debut CD was released on May 18 of this year and his current single “You Got ‘Em All” is moving up the charts. ••••••• Trent Harmon was excited to tell his girlfriend that he had big news. But she did too…she was leaving. When his longtime love shared she was moving to Thailand to fulfill her dream of teaching overseas, the country singer-songwriter was heartbroken. Propelled into the writing room with the raw emotion of how much he would miss her, he suddenly felt a kinship with pets everywhere. “I equate it to whenever a dog’s owner leaves,” says Trent with a laugh. “In their brain, that’s the last time that dog thinks he’s ever going to see you again. So, I said it out loud, ‘Guys, I’m the dog who she just left forever.’” Fortunately, Trent’s empty feeling had a happy ending. “Of course, she came back,” he says with a sheepish smile. And not only did he get the girl, he delivered a poignant new single, cut-you-tothe-core “You Got ‘Em All (Big Machine Records). The chill-inducing song is a study of the particular type of solitude he was left to experience, running down the laundry list of shared memories and sung in the expansive tenor that won Trent the title on the last season of American Idol

in 2016. From the lone piano notes that open the ballad to the story-telling lyrics of a girl fleeing her small town to spread her wings and the boy lost without her, “You Got ‘Em All” perfectly encapsulates that universal bittersweet ache of letting someone go. His expressive vocals blending melody and sentiment of knowing the right thing to do if you truly love someone. “I don’t get to be with you, but I hope you’re happy. I hope that fills that void that you’re leaving me with,” sums up Trent. Amazingly, Trent says that he and co-writers Justin Ebach (SESAC Songwriter of the Year 2017) and Jordan Minton — whom he had never met before — wrote “You Got ‘Em All” in under an hour. “It was so strange,” says Trent of the speedy session. “I don’t normally write like that. I’m really slow and methodical. I think that’s why her sudden news shook me at first.” But his wounded pride coupled with Minton’s impending nuptials — he was headed to his rehearsal dinner that night — provided inspiration. “We had two opposite trains of thoughts going on.” Indeed, Trent credits Jordan with bringing the hopeful energy to the song since, if left to his own devices, he says with a laugh, “It just would’ve been sad. I was probably 90/10 sad and he and he brought me back to about 60/40.” “You Got ‘Em All” is one of hundreds of songs that Trent wrote, with some of the biggest songwriters in Nashville, after dedicating himself to an ambitious

mission. At the start of 2017 he told his publisher Big Machine Music “I want to write once a day until February 2018. Twice a day if you can schedule them.” He kept his word to himself and is in the process selecting songs for his debut album, to follow up his Top 15 introduction called “There’s a Girl.” This writing process was therapeutic for Trent, who over the past year hadn’t been able to record music because of contract restrictions through his previous management deal. Though winning American Idol was a dream come true, it brought along a unique set of challenges. Yet like the moments of rising to the top each week, Trent once again has triumphed with his most personal work

to date. Growing up working on his parents’ farm and in their farm-to-table restaurant in northeast Mississippi, Trent recalls plugging his headphones in and singing along with everyone from Dolly Parton and Patty Loveless to Elvis Presley and Marty Robbins — his first album purchase — and being inspired to learn piano, guitar and drums to put his own music under that big voice. That soaring-to-the-rafters voice propelled him into the national spotlight, but now, fans will experience the soul behind the singer. With the release of “You Got ‘Em All” Trent exposes his heart, offering more than just the ending credits of TV.

Sidewalk Prophets take the stage Thursday Sidewalk Prophets, a Christian, pop and rock band out of Nashville, will take the main stage at 9 p.m. on Thursday in downtown Harlan during the 63rd annual Poke Sallet Festival. •••••• For pop/rock band Sidewalk Prophets, fans are family. And for the band that originated at Anderson University, this means inviting their fans into their entire recording and touring process. Comprised of Dave Frey (lead vocals), Cal Joslin (bass), Daniel Macal (lead guitar), Blake Bratton (keys/B3) and original co-founder Ben McDonald, who recently stepped off stage to work fulltime as the group’s manager, Sidewalk Prophets is intent on putting the message of the Gospel front and center and keeping their fans in the mix every step of the way. From letting fans suggest concert cities and venues and assembling album artwork based on fan-submitted photos to building tours around fan engagement, Sidewalk Prophets proves they put their fans first in every aspect of their work as they craft songs that point to something bigger than themselves. With a career spanning three major label studio releases — 2009’s These Simple Truths, 2012’s Live Like That and 2015’s Something Different (plus 2013’s celebrated holiday offering, Merry Christmas To You) — and multiple hits, including “The Words I Would Say,” “You Love Me Anyway” and “Live Like That,” among others, Sidewalk Prophets remains a mainstay on Christian radio. The Dove Award-winning band

has sold nearly 700,000 albums and 1.6 million digital downloads. In addition, the group has garnered five No. 1 songs, eight top five radio singles and more than 11 million views on YouTube. They’ve been nominated for a Billboard Music Award, multiple K-LOVE Fan Awards and four Dove Awards, taking home the New Artist of the Year Dove in 2010. Over the course of their career, they’ve played for more than 2.5 million fans, and counting. Known for spending more days on the road than anywhere else, Sidewalk Prophets’ most recent tours have morphed into interactive experiences for the band and fans alike. The Great Big Family Room Tour welcomed attendees into an intimate living room setting where they were greeted at the door by the band members themselves. Meanwhile, their highly-successful Prodigal Tour combined film, music and top-

notch production for an unparalleled immersive experience. The band will continue to set precedence with their creative live shows as a part of this fall’s Big Church Night Out Tour, alongside Newsboys, Blanca, 7eventh Time Down, and others. Sidewalk Prophets’ latest album, Something Different (Fervent/Word), also found the band approaching their creative process in an innovative way. Instead of scheduling a string of cowrites in Nashville, the longtime friends holed up in a secluded cabin on a lake in Pennsylvania for an extended amount of time to pray and write. “All these things were happening in our lives at that time, but here we sat, on the peaceful serenity of this lake. It was a different way to approach writing. Instead of a clock-in and clock-out approach to writing, we were in the moment, in this environment for days

on end asking God to fill the quiet but remove the distractions and burdens, and allow Him to speak through us,” Frey shares of the process. “I think the whole experience facilitated, in turn, a different way to show our hearts to the world.” Produced by GRAMMY®-winner Seth Mosley ( for KING & COUNTRY, Newsboys), Something Different has generated a string of Gospel-centric anthems, including “Prodigal,” “To Live Is Christ,” “Impossible” and “Come to the Table,” all of which reveal the heartbeat of the band’s missional vision. “There are so many different people we’ve met on the road—so many lives — and they’re all different,” Frey offers. “We’re all separate people. We all have our stories, but it’s the same God who connects us, and He is the something that makes us different.”

EmiSunshine, 13, headlines festival on Friday EmiSunshine will take the main stage at 9 p.m. on Friday in downtown Harlan during the 63rd annual Poke Sallet Festival. ••••••• It’s nearly impossible to explain the exceptional talents of EmiSunshine, the 13-year-old prodigy from East Tennessee who has captured the nation’s attention and enchanted hearts-a-many with her musical wizardry. Born Emilie Sunshine Hamilton, the singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist has been surrounded by family members who possess a genuine love for “salt-of-the-earth,” mountain melodies and lyrics. Emi embraced the classic country, blues and folk music that echoed throughout her Madisonville, TN home. Steeped in Appalachian music, Emi is a true vocal stylist. Influenced by legends (Loretta Lynn/Tanya Tucker/ The Louvin Brothers), she is a throwback to earlier eras of country music when Carolyn Reeves, Owner Licensed Specialist

trendsetters like Bessie Smith, June Carter, Loretta Lynn and Hank Williams made history. The sassy, strikingly powerful, ultra entertainer is bound and determined to follow in their footsteps, and while she has some pretty big shoes to fill, this little lady fits the bill. Emi launched her professional career performing at churches, community outings, and local festivals. It’s the spectacular 2014 performance at a Tennessee flea market that skyrocketed her career to become a worldwide phenomenon when a video of her stage show went viral on YouTube. Since her breakout at just nine years old, Emi has garnered more than 14 million YouTube views and a half million Facebook followers. Emi’s indescribable and inexplicable talents have taken the world by surprise. The witty songwriter self-produces all of her music (live and in the studio). Emi plays a wailing guitar; she can make the mandolin cry and the ukulele sing. Her

ability to combine her youthful, bubbly disposition with deep, meaningful and rather dark song content brings her imagination to life. While her music as been described as “old-timey,” she adds her own unique, contemporary blend of roots music that is equal parts Americana, Bluegrass, Gospel, and Country, with a sprinkle of Blues and a whole lot of “shock factor.” Described as a “modern-day Janis Joplin,” she delivers vivid emotion with every spine-chilling, spirited yet haunting note. The crooner now plays more than 50 dates a year backed by a group made up of those closest to her. Her father plays upright bass, her brother (John Letner) accompanies her on mandolin and “Uncle Bobby” Hill plays drums. The fearless entertainer has performed on The Today Show and The Grand Ole Opry (more than a dozen times), at The Ryman and numerous renowned festivals (CMA Fest and Merle Fest) making evident her confident musical direction.

The EmiSunshine bandwagon is loaded with adoring fans numbered in the millions from all over the globe. Personal musical heroes have been captivated by her commanding stage presence; Loretta Lynn, Emmylou Harris, Tim McGraw, Ricky Skaggs, Marty Stuart and The Grateful Dead (to name just a few) have stepped forward to sing the praises of EmiSunshine as her biggest applauders.

POKE SALLET FESTIVAL

Harlan authors – Looney, Edwards – to be at annual Poke Sallet Festival Harlan County natives and authors Bill J. Looney and Dr. Richard Edwards will be participating in the Poke Sallet Festival on June 1-2. Both will be at the Harlan Center signing and selling their novels which feature Harlan County settings and characters. Looney has authored five suspense novels and Edwards has just completed his seventh book. Looney is a 1970 graduate of Harlan High School and then attended the University of Tennessee where he played football. He graduated from UT with a degree in business administration in 1974 majoring in finance and banking and later served as the Budget Director for the State of Tennessee under the late Governor Ned Ray McWherter. He retired as City Manager of Ocala, Florida, in December of 2008. He currently lives in Columbia, South Carolina, and is writing on his sixth thriller. Looney’s newest book being featured at the festival is a joint venture with his Harlan High School classmates of 1970. “A classmate of mine who lives in Naples, Florida, Kaye Cole Hinson, called me with an idea of a class anthology. I immediately agreed to assist and now we have a beautiful collection of stories and poems from our classmates in a book titled In the Shadow of the Mountain,” said Looney. “The stories and poems based on our class memories of being students in Harlan are filled with emotion. Some are sad, some humorous, some thoughtful, some offer gratitude but all are filled with precious memories for all of us.” Dr. Edwards, Dickie as his classmates remember him, has now published his seventh novel. His books are fictional mysteries that take place in Harlan County. His latest, titled The Adventures of Preacher Puss, like his previous six novels spins a tale around his beloved home town. Edwards’s tales mix excitement, humor, and mountain characters that reflect his mountain heritage.

Dick described his last book as one like none other you’ve ever read. An exciting adventure as told by a cat. Preacher Puss is the feline resident in the Harlan County Sheriff ’s office with a unique ability to subdue crooks. The novel intertwines an attempt by a team of North Korean air force pilots to bomb a farm home in Harlan County with numerous heart-warming and hilarious escapades of Preacher Puss. In an effort to get revenge, Kim Jong-un, North Korea’s madman Supreme Leader, sends in a strike force to kill seven of his countrymen who failed in previous missions and were granted political asylum and living in Harlan County, but Preacher Puss thwarts their efforts. Officials decide to recognize their special hero by making

her an honorary Harlan County Deputy Sheriff, but the ceremony almost allows the bad guys to achieve their goal. Those readers that are either cat lovers and/or enjoy fast-paced adventure will treasure this story that mixes huge doses of mountain characters and humor with a thrilling story line. One reviewer said, “It is a thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat, but then I almost fell to the floor laughing at the antics of Preacher Puss and all the funny stories. This is one book I truly couldn’t put down. I read it in one day!” “Writing about Harlan has been a joy and pleasure. My early life was shaped here and my memories are precious to me,” said Edwards. “I know the reader will feel at home reading my stories.”
