Push forward. By the time you read this, we will be in month nine of the pandemic. Although much can be said about that, we choose to focus on the positive steps we’ve made to adjust to our “new normal” and look forward to what we can accomplish moving forward. College faculty, staff, and administrators have pivoted to make sure the level of education we provide does not waiver. Yes, some classes have been adjusted and some things can’t happen right now, but we still have 525 class offerings ready to go for spring. Along with that, the College has received funding from the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER) Fund to provide scholarships and stipends to retrain those affected by COVID-19. The Rural Maryland Council grant will expand our workforce offerings in the Edgewood area and a $1.5 million grant from the Phillip E. & Carole R. Ratcliffe Foundation will help us establish Harford’s Leading Edge Training Center Powered by the Ratcliffe Foundation, a workforce training facility located on the Rt. 40 Corridor. There is still a lot going on and we’re committed, as always, to all of you in the community. As virtual learning continues into spring, we hope you will take this opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and try an online or remote class. Many have been surprised at how much they enjoy them and how nice it is to connect with others, albeit through a computer. As a reminder, we offer several types of classes: Remote classes will be offered on set dates and times. You’ll have a live instructor and be able to interact with everyone in your class. It’s as close as you can get to face-to-face instruction without being in the same room. These classes will be offered primarily through Microsoft Teams. Online classes are more flexible. You‘ll log in on your own schedule and have a flexible amount of time to complete class expectations. Most of these classes are offered through our longtime partner ed2go. Hybrid classes are for your classes that require a hands-on component. Students will attend remote class instruction and then come to campus in a limited capacity to complete the hands-on training portions of the class. You’ll be notified directly if this applies to a class for which you are registered.. Ask Amy Training classes offer one-hour live demo computer training. They provide a great intro to online learning as well as skill-building classes that can enhance your resumé. Although campus life is definitely different, there’s still a lot going on at Harford! New classes are highlighted on pages 4 & 5 of the book, and there are several options for recreation, skill-building, career advancement, and enrichment.
