Interview with Mr. Sperling
I had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. Cissel in our last issue of The Harbor Hub. For this issue, I am excited to welcome . Mr. Andy Sperling, our next head of school. We met him when he visited in September, but he was kind enough to allow me to ask him a few questions so that we could be better acquainted before his July 1 start date.
What made you apply for this job?
Several aspects of HCDS really piqued my interest: - The mission “cherishing childhood” and a dedication to hard work - “Sine labore nihil” - The focus on community, kindness, and inclusivity - The fun traditions like the Gingerbread Extravaganza, Trunk or Treat, and Pi Day
What was your first impression of Harbor during your last visit?
Spending time at Harbor was such an honor for me. My first impression was that kids felt confident and connected. It was obvious that students felt safe and teachers challenged them. It is definitely a very special place. I was struck by how positive and affirming the culture felt. Everyone was very proud of their school.
Do you plan on making any changes to our school?
I don’t. Schools like Harbor grow and evolve because of how dedicated the teachers are to their own growth. With the excitement around the new building additions, there is much to anticipate! It always takes collaboration to make change. So, as we grow together, I can imagine teachers, students, parents, and members of the leadership teams all working together to develop new ideas for HCDS!
What is your philosophy for a Pre-K through 8 school?
- A place where children feel deeply known - A school must live its mission—and be committed to making decisions based on what’s best for kids -Teachers are responsible for helping students feel that they can do more than they imagine
What was your biggest accomplishment in your former school?
I am proud to have played a role in the growth that has taken place at LFCDS. Together, my colleagues and I designed an amazing STEAM Innovation Center. Perhaps I’m also proud of the influence I’ve had on our math program which allows students to feel both challenged, supported, and confident.
Is there anything else you would like us to know about you?
- I am getting married on April 3rd which is very exciting! My fiancée, Hilary, and I are extremely excited to be moving to Long Island in July and to be a part of such a warm, welcoming school community.
- I love to build computers as a hobby. Typically, I update and upgrade the parts, but every so often I rebuild the entire thing to keep up with technology advancements.
- I have been teaching math for over 30 years. My students inspire me – and it would be great to explore ways that I might be able to teach my favorite unit – I call it the Quadratic
Conundrum!
- I am looking forward to sharing more with everyone in the Harbor community.
