An Interview With Our Veteran Teachers

-How has the school changed positively since you first came here?

Mrs.McKenna:The school grew in size with the addition that now includes the two math rooms, history room, student lounge and lockers. The library was moved and the lunchroom made more available. Also, our camp added an in-ground pool.

Mrs. Huang Ernst:Harbor has changed positively with the growth of technology, the new playground and the beautiful soccer field.

- What is your favorite tradition?

Mrs.McKenna: Pi Day Mrs.Huang Ernst: The food drive and Toys for Tots are my favorite traditions. The Harbor community comes together to help the surrounding community.

- Was Trunk or Treat and the Gingerbread Extravaganza a tradition?

Mrs. McKenna: No, both are newer traditions that have become very popular. Mrs. Huang Ernst: Trunk or Treat and the Gingerbread Extravaganza did not became a tradition until about 20 years ago.

- How long have you been teaching?

Mrs.McKenna:30 years Mrs.Huang Ernst: A very long time

-Which class has impressed you the most so far?

Mrs.McKenna: I have no favorites; each class has their unique assets. Mrs.Huang Ernst: Each class that I've taught has been special in their own way. I'm glad that each class has been different from the next. It makes each one memorable.

-Was online learning positive or negative to the school in your opinion?

Mrs. McKenna:Online teaching/learning was a benefit to the school at a needed time. I do not think it was negative. “Think Positive!” Mrs. Huang Ernst: Online learning was a substitute for in-person learning. Nothing is better than being in person with your class!

-Who were some of the teachers that were at the school when you first came?

Mrs. McKenna : Mrs. Sharpe, Ms. Otterspore, Mrs. DeGroot, Mr. DeKnipp, Mr. Schwenk, Dr Irvin, Mrs. Pollina, Ms. Huang-Ernst Mrs. Huang Ernst : Mrs. McKenna

- What is your favorite memory at Harbor?

Mrs. McKenna : Graduation! It is so nice to be part of and see students graduate. I’m very proud of them. Mrs. Huang Ernst:I love each graduation - watching each class get ready for their next educational adventure - always feeling certain that they are well-prepared for high school.

- Would you consider Harbor your second home?

Mrs. McKenna: I have made many long-lasting friends at Harbor, so I consider them like family. Mrs. Huang Ernst:Harbor has been a big part of my life for many happy years.
