Dr. Sonia Lobo Planey

As a biomedical research scientist, I identify new diseases, understand how diseases work and to develop ways of detecting and curing them. I enjoy the thrill of discovery, innovation, and the challenge of stretching my mind to develop new research ideas. Working at TCMC has enabled me to become part of something that has the potential to impact so many people, whether it is through the physicians and scientists trained by the school or through the innovative discoveries made in our laboratories. I love spending time with my kids outdoors, especially hiking in the local state parks and geocaching. I am also a United Way Community Impact volunteer. I love Scranton’s strong sense of community and tradition, natural landscape and big-city appeal with a small-town feel.

Associate Professor of Biochemistry , The Commonwealth Medical College (TCMC) Education: PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Thomas Jefferson University Family: Cole and Noah, Sons Resides: Scranton www.scrantonchamber.com

The Chamber of Commerce has been a catalyst in the growth of Net Driven,® providing financing options, training, marketing opportunities, networking and workforce development. They helped provide the foundation for our company, as well as tools to help us gain strength and independence to grow. I founded Net Driven,® in 2007, because as a third generation tire dealer, I personally understand the struggles the industry is facing. Dealers that do not have a strong internet presence struggle to compete with big box stores with massive marketing budgets. Net Driven® produces distinctive internet solutions tailored to individual automotive business. We have clients in all 50 states, every Canadian province and other foreign countries. Between graduating from Dunmore High School and returning to Scranton in 2005, I have lived in eight different cities (including London and Paris) and visited over 40 different countries, but I have never found a better place to live than Northeast PA. The people of the region create a feeling of togetherness that is unique. The recent progress made in Scranton is amazing. It is inspiring to work in a city like Scranton where so many people are dedicated to the success of the region, the local economy and the city’s sense of identity. This year we celebrated the opening of our new headquarters in downtown Scranton. We work with regional colleges and Scranton Career Link to find local talent. We sponsor events such as AAF NEPA ADDY® Awards and TEDx Scranton that inspire regional progress.

The Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce has been a strong supporter of the medical college and a driving force behind the Regional Bioscience Initiative. Biomedical research can have profound effects on a community in terms of improving quality of medical care by attracting physicians and scientists to the region, leading to the development of novel, cutting-edge treatment strategies for patients and improving quality of care. Biomedical research can also lead to positive economic growth through creation of jobs in the development of small biotech companies, intellectual property development and working on federal research grants.
