Brief Outline A three part day brief in collaboration with Jake Greenhalgh. The brief was set by Dr. Me and the format resembled ‘A Day In The Life Of Dr. Me’ with a set amount of time allocated to do each part. Part 1 Create a vinyl cover for the release of a limited edition 12” of an Evian Christ mix called duga 3. Considerations Attempt to make the concept graphically represent the 10hz tapping sound making up the duga 3 transmission. Part 2 Create a poster for Odonis Odonis with Saint Coltrane as support scheduled for Wednesday 18th of April, 2014 at Kraak Gallery. Format A3 Part 3 Create a piece of work to no brief and for no reason other than the process of creativity and artistic freedom. Format 230 x 160 mm Work Process Research was carried out together and concepts were discussed collaboratively. Designs were made individually according to our own interpretations for the purpose of presenting two designs for each brief as requested.

Part 1 - Vinyl Cover Design, Evian Christ

Research

Concept

Research into duga 3 transmission jointly undertaken. It was found that it is a Russian ‘over the horizon radar system’ which can detect early warning signals. By listening to Evian Christ’s mix duga 3 there was a tapping sound which could be interpreted as gun shots continuously being shot at targets. There was a sense of a journey in the sound. This sensation through listening to the music mixed with research to inform that the duga 3 transmission is a Russian ‘over the horizon radar system’ which can detect early warning signals, led to the design for the vinyl cover. Dark, eerie colours with the targets in red for the tapping sound.

A simple design with shooting targets created in red and overlaid an image of the metal towers. A sensation of a journey is depicted in the position of the target, which appear to be disappearing up between the top of the metal towers.

Research Research into Odonis Odonis and their previous vinyl covers was carried out. By listening to their music it was found that there were elements of structure in amongst unstructured, dark, almost wild moments. The music appeared quite dark.

Concept The design for the poster is especially inspired by the sensation of the music with an attempt to reflect this by overlaying a simple pattern over the band’s name. With the typeface used for their logo being unstructured and rugged in the outline this then represents the wild, unstructured part whilst the structured pattern of the four squares works to represent the calmer more structured part of their music. The black colour with white text has been chosen because of the dark a eerie effect the music can have.

Part 3 - Self Directed Art Piece

Research Due to very short amount of time given to finish this brief only a limited amount of research was undertaken, the form of finding images with moving elements.

Concept After a day of experiencing sounds, the inspiration for the design came from waves, sunbeams and grass moving in the wind. With a very short amount of time left to create the design it was kept very minimalistic.
