resistance within human life

i started my research by looking at things people had fought for in their lives, the resistance groups of the past.

21st c resist

century tance

as well as the resistance of people and their beliefs, i have looked into the resistance of objects we use in our daily life & the clothes we wear. this interest came to me whilst browsing ikea & remembering the mechanical displays they featured in the 90’s that demonstrated the product’s resistance to daily life

thought process point; combine the two, resistance of the fibres of the clothing worn by resistance movements & freedom fighters. possible texture or pattern created by intertwining fibres & movements

BELFAST:

OF POLITICA

A CITY AL MURALS

Belfast & it’s painted murals represent an important example of cultural & political expression. the city is littered with murals, however the higher concentration is in working class areas. Both sides of the resistance movement used the murals to highlight their political issues & rally support. s this society edges towards a post-conflict situation, murals continue to be a prominent form of memorial. Many images commemorate the loss of life on both sides, caused by years of violent conflict. In some areas the peace process has generated a number of humorous, cartoon-style murals. In the Protestant areas, for instance, bulldogs allude to the British connection.

The murals not only represent political resistance but commemorate important events in irish and english history

the use of public and residential space to say something reminded me of the series of adverts for havaianas that were created around new york city.

typography in resistance

here are examples of typography in resistance movements, in the mexican example (left) the serif text holds similarities to that seen in french resistance literature (below) however its gand rendered quality emotes a feeling of a more personal kind.

Medals of resistance

i think that resistance of whatever form, be it in terms of trying something outside of the graphic design ‘rules’ or standing up for beliefs is something that should be commended for its bravery, whether its outcome is ultimately good or bad. to resist something is a personal quality that takes great courage.

i want my outcome to represent the struggle of resistance members of the british public face combined with the resistance i face in my personal life

initial vector

the lines represent resistance of the pattern on the medal of the resistance & the breaking in the lines is the logo of resistance, its positioning represents the breaking of typical layouts

experimentation with textures of the ribbon on the medal of resistance

final poster, i also think that it is something that will stand out amongst typical posters on people’s walls. if i had more time & resources i would like to project it onto the side of a building like the murals of belfast or maybe use fabric printed like this to make wartime poppys for experimentation in photography.
