tion is no different. “The notion that wild women should not be tamed is the very reason we refuse to hold them back with restrictive, rigid elements like boning, corseting and heavy fabrics,” says Founder and Creative Director Megan Ziems. According to Ziems, the overall theme for this assortment of bridal looks was initially inspired by famous rebellious, iconic women, including the Peter Lindbergh-era ‘90s supermodels, in order to appeal to a modern bride. “The collection first and foremost celebrates self- expression as a form of personal freedom,” says Ziems. “Our dresses are an extension of a woman’s substance—they make you FEEL something.” Each look challenges the traditional stigma of what it means to be a “bride,” focusing instead on the independent women sporting the gowns. “We design for women with a strong sense of self,” Ziems added.

The reality star married basketball player Michael Johns on July 8. Their wedding, which was captured by Sydney Marie, is simply unforgettable for all the right reasons. Isabella Smith and Michael Johns gathered their closest friends and family together for a romantic ceremony near Tampa, Florida. Now the question is: Where do we begin when looking back on the special day?

ack in November 2013, Isabella Smith and her family attended a six-day seminar on creating one’s own destiny — a trip that would eventually lead the star to meeting Michael Johns. “I was not into it at first, but I learned so much about myself and why my relationships didn’t work that by the end I was on a high,” Isabella told Redbook in 2014, adding that she ended things with a few people she had been casually dating immediately following the seminar. “The next day, my costar introduced [Michael and me],” she revealed of Johns, who plays basketball for the Washington Capitals. “It couldn’t have been a better time. We’ve been open and honest from day one.” One quick scan of the couple’s respective Instagram accounts shows an undeniable bond, which the lifestyle blogger previously told Entertainment Tonight has been on full-blast since their initial meeting. “I mean, I’ve never really been the person to think about ‘When you know you know,’ but it was just kind of like that,” Smith told ET in 2016. “When we first met each other we were like, ‘And we’re done.’ ” The normally private Johns confirmed he and Smith were dating in February 2014. “She’s a cool, cool gal. She’s just a sweetheart, very loving, very giving,” the athlete shared during an interview with 106.7 The Fan. “She puts so much great out into the world. I’m a pretty lucky guy.” When describing what makes her relationship with Johns so different from previous ones, Smith simply revealed she could be her true self around the athlete. “Every relationship, there was nothing wrong or bad, but there was nothing right. I had one foot out because I didn’t want to get hurt,” Smith explained to Redbookin June 2014. “And I didn’t say what was on my mind because I didn’t want to ruffle any feathers. I needed to be perfect. Now I’m not holding any-

thing back because I’d rather get my heart broken than never know what it is to be completely, madly in love.” Although Smith and Johns embarked on a longdistance relationship due to work obligations, the couple still kept things, err, intimate, turning to phone sex sessions whenever apart. “I’m really bad at it … I’ll get halfway through and start laughing,” Smith revealed. “It’s an art. I applaud people who are good at it. They need to come and help me keep a straight face!” Jumping for joy! On Aug. 18, 2015, Smith and Johns announced their engagement on Instagram. “We are overwhelmed with joy and excitement to share with you our recent engagement!” Smith captioned a photo of the pair. Just one month after getting engaged, Smith told PEOPLE: “I’m just feeling so happy and blessed every moment of every day. My favorite thing about being engaged is just a sense of warmth and just joy.”

It was a night of “perfection” for Isabella Smith. Smith married Johns on July 8 in a romantic, indoor wedding at Oxford Exchange in Tampa, where Smith grew up. “When Michael and I looked at the venue, we fell in love with its unique character and knew it was the pace we wanted to get married,” Smith, 28, tells PEOPLE in this week’s exclusive cover story. “It just felt right to be married here.” Designed by event planner Troy Williams of Simply Troy Lifestyle + Events, the wedding weekend was a celebration of love and family — both of which were essential to the bride and groom. “It was really important to me that we had our ceremony in her hometown,” says Johns, 34, who wore a Brooks Brothers tuxedo. “Isabella and I are very centimental, so it was important to us to be married in the town that it all started.” FALL 2018

ore than 2,000 blooms were used to create the floral arrangements, all designed by Kristen Griffith-VanderYacht of Wild Bloom, including 100 flower boxes and at least 200 garden roses in the reception centerpieces. After the wedding, Smith and Johns donated all the flowers to The Full Bloom, a non-profit organization that repurposes gently used flowers into bouquets for patients in area hospitals, hospice care and other facilities. During the ceremony, Smith, who wore a custom modern style Marchesa gown, and Johns said traditional vows and exchanged Lorraine Schwartzdesigned rings. “Michael and I kept eye contact the entire ceremony,” she says. “We never stopped looking at each other.” Her favorite moment was “kissing each other for the first time as husband and wife as the confetti cannons exploded around us,” Smith adds. “I couldn’t stop crying all weekend and most people [thought] I would have cried during the entire ceremony, but instead I was just so excited and ready to celebrate!” Afterwards at their reception, Smith was surprised by her bridesmaids and girlfriends with a choreographed dance number to Sia’s song, “The Greatest,” which is one of Smith’s all time favorite songs. The bride surprised her groom as well — with timed fireworks over the lake during their first dance to OneRepublic’s “All This Time” (to which she also walked down the aisle). Guests were given turn-down gifts each night, put together from the bride and groom by Gifts for the Good Life, which included a Happy Spritz facial mist, Sugarfina Bubbly Bears with a J&B monogrammed label, and a make-your-own margarita set with Casamigos Tequila or make-your-own lemonade kit, among other goodies. Smith and Johns announced their engagement in August 2015 after dating for a year and a half. Their wedding weekend was “perfection,” she says. “I don’t think I ever really necessarily dreamed about my wedding as a kid. But I know I will always cherish and remember it for the rest of my life. Unsurprisingly, the couple is really enjoying newlywed life. “It’s just the greatest thing ever to marry your best friend,” Johns told PEOPLE.

moment, from beach parties and group meals to late-night tacos after saying “I do,” as Chloe and Matt kicked off their marriage with “an amazing party for our favorite people.” Keep reading for more!

Chloe was on the hunt for a gown that was unconventional and unique, and Dan Jones’s “Unbridaled” line fit the bill. The bride chose a silk crepe gown with a French illusion tulle bodice that had a keyhole center and a high halter neckline. “I planned to change into something more flirty at the reception, but I loved my gown so much that I never took it off,” she says. As a nod to her mom’s bridal bouquet, Chloe paired palm leaves with white lilies. To match the beachy location, Matt wore a navy blue suit, brown shoes, and a white shirt with no tie. Before walking down the aisle, Chloe let out her twisted chignon to reveal cascad-

ing waves in her hair. The ceremony took place on a lawn overlooking the ocean, with a garland of palm leaves dotted with amaryllis, lisianthus, and white lilies covering the ceremony structure. “I love how greenery looks on dark wood, so we skipped the linens and used tropical greenery to create runners,” says Chloe. Amaryllis and lisianthus added touches of white, while votive candles created a glow. Large palm leaves decorated the bride and groom’s chairs, and were also set atop white dinner plates.

W

hen it was time to plan their December 9, 2017 wedding, Chloe and Matt’s inspiration came from a feeling they’ve often had while traveling. “Every time we go on a trip somewhere new, as much fun as we might have together, we always wish we could go back with our friends," she explains. "So when we first visited Sayulita, Mexico, we fell in love and knew we had to bring our friends and family back with us.” They turned to Villa del Oso to host their celebration, planning a relaxed oceanfront wedding reminiscent of their coastal upbringings. “We wanted our wedding to feel unpretentiously special so our guests would be comfortable and ready to party,” says Chloe. Planners Miguel and Yendi of A La Carte grasped the vision immediately, meaning long-distance planning was (almost) a breeze for the happy couple. They invited Zibetti Photo and Film to capture every fun

Matt Misisco first spotted Chloe Mitchell on campus at UC Santa Barbara, but was too nervous to introduce himself. Thankfully, a mutual friend made the intro in November of 2009. “I, on the other hand, hadn’t noticed Matt, but I fell hard and fast the moment we met,” Chloe says. So fast, in fact, that when Matt told Chloe he wasn’t looking for anything serious, she lied and agreed with him so he wouldn’t call it off. Matt soon decided he was okay with serious, and they dated for the next seven years. Then, he took Chloe back to the place where he’d accidentally fallen in love with her to propose— with a ring Chloe had picked out five years earlier. “We were window shopping one day, and I pointed out my dream ring and joked that I didn’t want to get engaged for at least five years, but that he should take note of the ring I wanted,” she says. “We never talked about it again, but five years later, he was down on one knee with that exact ring!”

HONEYMOON

It doesn’t make much sense to weigh every dollar invested in your wedding if you’re going to spend like a sailor on the honeymoon. it’s easy to succumb to the temptation to indulge your every whim, leaving you with a big fat credit card bill on your homecoming. By

Kate Gene

T

he average newly married couple spends $5,111 on their honeymoon trip, according to a Conde Nast Bridal Info bank survey. Favorite destinations include Hawaii, the Caribbean and Mexico, with more distant destinations such as Tahiti and Europe gaining in popularity, says Janet Hyman, regional vice president of Frosch Travel Duet in Deerfield, Ill. Hyman stresses that it’s important for the couple to really think about what kind of trip they want before planning it. “Figure out what activities you both enjoy and build those into the honeymoon,” she says. “It’s hard to plan a trip with lots of different types of activities.” Like most events in life, careful planning will help you stretch your dollars to accommodate what you and your spouse most want to do on your honeymoon while avoiding the extra charges that can quickly suck up your cash. Start with an idea of how much you want to spend, because without a budget or some type of spending limit, costs can escalate quickly. When planning your honeymoon, consider these cost-saving tips: Book way ahead. The farther you plan in advance, the better deal you’ll get. Whether you purchase an all-in-one resort or cruise package or painstakingly put the pieces together yourself on the Internet, the earlier you start working, the better. Booking early means a year or close to it; by even six months ahead of your trip, most of the deals evaporate. “The travel landscape has really shifted. A couple of years ago you could get a lot of bargains, but since last year, things have picked up and the planes and hotels are getting crowded,” says Alan Fields, co-author of “Bridal Bargains.” Don’t count on cutting costs by using frequent-flier miles. The frequent-flier market has gotten so tight, Fields says, that you have to figure on booking a year in advance to get anything, even an upgrade to first class.“I know that United, for example, opens their flights for booking at 2 a.m. 330 days in advance, so if you want a hope of using your miles, especially on a prime destination, it’s not a bad idea 20 Veil Magazine FALL 2018

to stay up until 2 a.m. to try to book it.” Or wait until the last minute. If you are flexible in your travel plans and can live with some uncertainty, there’s a lot to be said for booking travel at the last minute — say two weeks before the wedding. “These days, the cheapest travel is to be had either 10 to 11 months in advance or at the last minute,” says Fields. “Sign up for airline newsletters that advertise last-minute bargain fares and packages or visit travel Web sites for these types of deals.”

you may have to fork out a lot more dough to get where you want to go. “Consider taking a post-wedding weekend trip, then doing the longer trip in the off-season, when rates are lower,” says Leah Ingram, author of “The Complete Guide for the Anxious Bride.” This idea of decoupling the honeymoon from the wedding may be particularly attractive to career-driven couples who might have a hard time taking time off from a busy office for the wedding as well as an extended honeymoon.

Decoupling your honeymoon from your wedding. Since most weddings are in the summer and planned without a lot of thought for saving money on the post-wedding trip,

“You don’t even have to wait that long,” Fields says. “If you get married in June, you can do the trip in September and save significantly, especially on popular destinations.” Ask for

“ ”

FIGURE OUT WHAT ACTIVITIES YOU BOTH ENJOY AND BUILD THOSE INTO THE HONEYMOON.

freebies and barter for services. Everyone loves newlyweds, so take advantage of this nearly universal sentimentality by asking for discounts or freebies, suggests Ingram. If you tell your waiter that you’re on your honeymoon, you may get a free dessert or bottle of wine. Ask the desk clerk at the hotel where you’re staying for any free upgrades, as well. Take this a step farther by thinking about what services you and your fiance can offer that you can use to barter with a resort or hotel for a discount. “When I was planning my honeymoon, I was doing event photography, weekly.”

IMAGES COURTESY OF LIGHTHOUSE PHOTOGRAPHY

Scout deals out far in advance. If you’re set on an adventurous honeymoon, check out official tourism Web sites and travel guides for dis-

count-minded travelers in advance, Fields recommends. Most tour companies have Websites these days and many offer coupons, if you’re willing to commit to taking a tour on a less popular day such as Wednesday. “Just remember, you can over schedule your honeymoon by packing in too many activities,” Fields says. “You really don’t have to do something every single day. Extra tours and trips like snorkeling really add costs to your honeymoon, so be selective about the tours and special activities that you do commit to.” Plan a destination wedding. Destination weddings, where couples invite their guests to their wedding at their honeymoon destination, are gaining in popularity. The travel industry is just waking up to the concept of destination weddings, Fields says, and there are some great deals to be had. For example, you could add a wedding to a honeymoon in Aruba for an additional cost of $500 to $1,000, far below the cost of a traditional full-blown wedding, he says. Since

it’s likely that far fewer guests will travel that far to attend the wedding, your costs for food, drink and other expenses will fall dramatically. Airlines are offering discounts for parties of 10 to 15 or more traveling to destination weddings. Take advantage of the deal! Many resorts offer packages that not only include meals, but also popular activities. Just make sure that you want to take advantage of these opportunities, otherwise you’ll be paying for things that you won’t use. Also, if you’re the type who gets bored eating dinner at the same place every night, you may end up paying for meals both at the resort and at off-resort restaurants, which doesn’t make a lot of sense.

If you donʼt live in a landlocked area, local beach destinations are a great way to save on your honeymoon.

Invitations are a key part of planning a wedding. After all, what’s the point of planning one if you don’t invite your guests to join you? Those little pieces of paper can be pretty tricky to navigate, and all the details tend to bring up questions! So we’ve rounded up the basics of invitation etiquette to get you started, stress-free.

tIPs to Na IlING

WeDDING IN VITATION ETIQUETTE

By Jaimie Mackey

TIMING IS EVERYTHING

For a wedding that isn’t a destination event, send the save-the-dates six months before the wedding, and the invitations eight weeks in advance. For a destination wedding, save the dates should go out around eight months ahead of time, and invitations should be mailed 12 weeks before your wedding date.

SPECIFY A DEADLINE

Make your RSVP date two to three weeks before your wedding date to allow enough time for you to get a final head count to the caterer (one week before) and to finalize your seating chart. If some guests still haven’t responded by your deadline, give them a quick call and ask for their RSVPs (still via mail) so you have all their information.

3 4

GRANT PLUS-ONES

When deciding whether to invite your guests with guests of their own, make a rule and stick to it. That could mean everyone gets a date, or you might limit it to those in a serious relationship. Don’t make any exceptions—beyond your wedding party, that is! Bridesmaids and groomsmen should be invited with a plus-one, no matter their relationship status.

SHARE KEY INFO

There are a few details you MUST include on your invitation: The names of the couple getting married, the date and time of the wedding, the location and the dress code. But of course, there’s a lot more your guests will need to know. Include an invitation insert with the URL of your wedding website, any rehearsal dinner details, and the contact information of the hotel where you’ve booked a room block.
