Hannah McPherson is a full time student and practicing artist at the Haliburton School of Art + Design in Haliburton, Ontario. She was a student in the Bealart program in London, Ontario for two years, completing the Foundation course and specializing in ceramics and lithography. For five years, Hannah has been involved in the Expressions In Chalk festival held in London Ontario every year in August. Hannah enjoys working with many different mediums. Her true passion resides in the playfulness of clay and the labour-intensive process of lithography, but lately she has been engaged in experimenting with new materials, such as wool, nylon, wire and assorted fabrics. Warm, neutral shades found in nature and comfortable, soft materials are what drive me to create my work. I love going through walks in the forest or just being outside in general. Our environment, the beautiful natural world around us has so much to offer and it is one of my biggest inspirations. From our surrounding environment, I admire the colours that are seen throughout, such as browns, greens, blues, deep yellows and shades of white. My palette repeatedly consists of these hues and are seen throughout each of my pieces. I have developed the habit of always using this palette. I’ve developed the habit of drawing inspiration from the atmosphere I am faced with every day. Habits are something that everyone and anyone can relate to. They can exist in the realm of being healthy, nervous, detrimental or just born out of boredom. My habits have reflected in my creative process of pulling wool apart and knotting it back up again. Habits are something we do to feel secure, either when we are anxious or our conscious mind tells us it is something we need to do. They can become a shelter for us. The [habit]ats I have created act as a shelter, a home. A place to feel safe, a place to be who you are. I have spent a lot of time reflecting and thinking about these types of habits and from there, I have realized I have many.
