Micro clover can make all the difference on your coastal historical home.

Coastal historic homes offer a unique set of challenges when it comes to landscape design. The salt air, sandy soil, and strong winds can take a toll on plants, making it challenging to create a lush and inviting outdoor space that also respects the historical value of the home. Micro-clover is an excellent solution for these homes- it was actually commonly found in lawn seed bags in the early 1900s.

It is a low-growing, hardy, droughttolerant plant that can withstand salt and sandy soil. It is also rich in nitrogen, which helps to nourish the soil and support other plants in the landscape. Additionally, it requires less maintenance than traditional grass and is able to outcompete weeds, making it an excellent option for keeping weeds at bay in a lawn.

SEASONAL ANNUAL PLANTING

A comprehensive plan that promises stunning results..

Spring Annuals:

Hanley will meticulously install numerous six-inch pots of summer annuals in the beds, pots, and planters of your home. Each flower planting area will be reviewed with you prior to installation so that expectations are met and exceeded Additionally, we will apply a single application of granular 10-10-10 or equivalent fertilizer as well as compost (sourced off-island to avoid arsenic contamination) on the day of installation

Fall Annuals:

Our landscaping proposal for your property promises stunning results: over the year, flowers, pumpkins, and numerous winter greens will be color coordinated, mapped out, and professionally arranged to create an oasis of sophistication and luxury.

In early September, we will remove the summer annuals and replace them with fall annuals. The new plants will be installed in the same location as their predecessors We aim to keep the design aesthetic consistent while adding some seasonal variety. The fall annuals will stay in the ground over the winter and be removed when the summer annuals are installed

Planter Maintenance:

During planting, Hanley will ensure proper soil, fertilizer, and soil contents are present in the planters For maintenance, we will provide regular fertilization, swapping dead or dying flowers, and weeding/cutbacks. Upon request, we can also provide a quote for "as-needed" watering- which may sometimes be daily.

SHRUB PRUNING & IRRIGATION

A comprehensive plan that promises stunning results..

The crew at Hanley has had years of experience trimming the delicate hedges at homes in Newport

Trimming & Pruning:

Shrubs may be pruned by hand or lightly sheared

Shrubs may be cut with a gas or electric trimmer.

Collected natural debris will be removed from site.

Service will be performed on certain dates in your proposal

It may be recommended as needed in other events.

Irrigation (Dependent):

We make sure that your system is properly filled with water, inspect all sprinkler heads for any needed repairs, adjust them and if necessary, program the controller, and verify it's working correctly. Our irrigation services are included in our landscaping contracts, but we will invoice customers for time and materials spent on any repair services required. Additionally, we winterize by purging the system of water and using air compression techniques. Service calls have technician fees based on the nature of the repair and only licensed RI Plumbers and Technicians can partner with us on those services

GRASS & CLOVER

Sod allows for instant gratification, as it provides a fully mature lawn within days of installation. This contrasts with seed, which can take weeks or even months to fully germinate and establish itself. Additionally, sod is less prone to erosion and washouts, as the roots of the sod are already established and hold the soil in place. Sod is also less likely to be affected by pests or diseases, as it is a mature lawn that has already established a root system and is better equipped to fend off invaders.

Seed & Clover

To seed a lawn using either lawn seed or microclover, we first prepare the area by removing debris, leveling and grading the soil, and adding any necessary amendments such as fertilizer or soil conditioner. Next, we spread the seed or seed mix evenly across the area, ensuring proper coverage, and then lightly rake or roll the area to ensure seed-to-soil contact. We then provide proper watering and maintenance to the newly seeded area, including regular watering and fertilizing to ensure germination and establishment of the new lawn.

Conceptualization

Each client working with us is assigned a dedicated project manager This project manager will work with you and our architect or designer to create a list of plants, ideas, and photos of inspiration for us to work with Themes are essentialand our design staff has ample experience in matching themes like Japanese courtyards, coastal oases, and even European-themed designs

Design

Once we have inspiration, our design team will typically create 3 sketches for clients to review Next, clients will make changes and choose a final design.

Once the final design is completed, it is rendered (as seen on the left) with their property This animation is typically a 4-5 minute video showcasing each area of their property to ensure their backyard is precisely how they dream

Installation

When the design is finalized, it is passed on to our landscape team. We procure plants from as far away as New Jersey.

Plants are then installed with the direction of the landscape architect or designer. In addition, we offer watering plans for new plants for our clients that are part-time residents.

How Newport is linked to our sister city in Japan

HYDRANGEAS

As you drive into Newport by Easton's Beach, you'll come across a sign that reads "Welcome to Newport," accompanied by a list of its sister cities. While each of these cities has a unique story, one particular city stands out - Shimoda, Japan. With a population of approximately 21,000, Shimoda has much in common with Newport, which boasts a population of 25,000. The cities share a similar climate and economies (Shimoda's economy revolves around tourism). What truly links Newport and Shimoda, however, is its hydrangeas.

Interestingly, Shimoda is home to the "Shimoda Hydrangea Festival," a dazzling display of three million hydrangeas lining the countryside.

When driving around Shimoda, you'll see that many homes have hydrangeas in their landscapes. This is because hydrangeas are actually native to Japan, where they flourish in mild climates, coastal settings, and adequate rainfall. Thus, it's no surprise that dozens of parks and gardens across Japan are renowned for their magnificent hydrangeas, and Shimoda is just one of many.

Most hydrangeas are native to the mountains of Japan. European explorers brought them back to Europe, where they found their way to the United States in the 1700s. Driving around Newport and Shimoda is slightly different, but in the summer months, you may feel right at home in Japan.
