Formative Assessment UNIT 5: Multisyllable Words with Suffixes Keep this card handy to provide immediate feedback as you teach the lesson. • • • •

provide students with a list of base words that don’t change spelling when suffixes are added, e.g., dirt, frost. Students should say the base word, add the correct suffix, and then say the new word.

Lesson 18 Suffixes -ful, -less

a student is not yet able to decode words with suffixes -ful or -less

provide the student with words that don’t change spelling when adding the suffix, e.g., armful, cheerful. Have the student draw a line to break the word, say each syllable, and blend the syllables into a word.

Lesson 19 Suffixes -sion, -tion

students are not yet able to decode words with suffixes -sion or -tion

write base words and words with suffixes on cards; for example, use act and action. Students match each base word to the suffixed word. Guide them to say the words in each pair aloud.

Lesson 20 Suffixes -ment, -ness

a student is not yet able to decode words with suffixes -ment or -ness

display a number of base words. Display a second list of words with the same base word and its suffix. Have the student match the suffixed words to the base words. Examples: agree, excite, replace, dark, kind, shy and agreement, excitement, replacement, darkness, kindness, shyness
