Digital Formation Tools: Letter & Number
Air Writing is a kinesthetic strategy with visual and auditory components. Picking up and holding pencils adds a tactile component. This strategy allows you to watch the entire class and ensures that all students form their letters correctly.
Materials
• “Air Writing” from
Rock, Rap, Tap & Learn music album (optional) • Brightly colored ball
Activity
1. Sing “Air Writing” to prepare the class for participation. 2. Choose a letter. Use a brightly colored ball to trace the letter in the air in front of your class. 3. Have students hold a pencil correctly in the air. Everyone checks pencil grips. 4. Retrace the letter again with your students.
Note: If you are facing your students, make the letter backwards in relation to you so that the letter will be correct from your students’ perspective. This activity also works well with numbers.
