Like you, we have been closely following the impact of the pandemic on students. While some of the most startling data paints a bleak picture for some of our youngest learners, there is hope in the heartening stories that we continually hear from classrooms across the country. Teachers are demonstrating their resilience, rising to meet the challenges ahead.

But one thing remains starkly clear to all—students need foundational literacy skills now more than ever before. And our programs are uniquely positioned to build them. Because from the moment a student writes their first letter all the way to fluent reading, we are right there with them, providing the support they need to strengthen these crucial skills.

Since it was first introduced more than 40 years ago, Handwriting Without Tears (p. 38) has emerged as the world leader in handwriting instruction, helping all students learn this key skill developmentally. We’ve taken this fundamental approach to each program we create, making it the core of what we do.

That's why we are thrilled that teachers and students have gotten to know A–Z for Mat Man and Me (p. 28) last year, and were introduced to Phonics, Reading, and Me (p. 12) last fall. This innovative new K–3 reading program is the latest in our growing portfolio that builds foundational literacy skills based on the science of reading. To address the inequities teachers are facing today, we've developed a digital solution that amplifies their ability to keep all students on track for success through personalized pathing.

Get Set for School (p. 80) users can now make assessments much more manageable with digital progress monitoring on our new platform—Assessments to Guide Instruction. The assessments that teachers already are familiar with have been expanded to cover all learning domains, with results that can be tracked in one digital ecosystem.

New enhancements were also added to the award-winning Keyboarding Without Tears (p. 102). Several new activities will help students in grades 3–5 practice common online testing questions, honing skills that are required on standard assessments across the country.

Of course, to best position students for success, educators need to be positioned for growth. Our Professional Learning (p. 106) offerings are our strong, central pillar. In this catalog you'll find an in-depth overview of our workshops, each driven by a wealth of experience. These learning opportunities build the capacity of your teams to do the great work they’re so passionate about and ensure that you make the most of your investment with our programs.

Educators, families, occupational therapists, and yes, students have stepped up to meet the challenges ahead, and I hope throughout this catalog, you’ll see that we are alongside you all. Thank you for all that you do for students, and please know that our support for you remains as steadfast as ever.

Thank you,

WE START WITH A LINE.

It's the most fundamental expression of language. Then, the magic happens! With one simple stroke, the line transforms into a letter.

The path to literacy spirals out from this subtle movement—when a child´s scribbling becomes language. They will discover that this letter has a sound, which fuses into words, which cohere into sentences, and eventually, into the stories from which they can learn and confidently share their thoughts.

All students share this powerful experience with learning. And it all starts with a line.

Learning Without Tears is where the joy of teaching meets the joy of learning. We have spent more than 40 years designing instructional methods for student success. Our programs specialize in helping students graduate from the mechanics of writing and reading skills to fully embracing literacy and discovering new worlds of learning.

Handwriting is one of the foundational skills that leads students toward automatic word recognition. In Handwriting Without Tears, students learn to write their names and write letters beyond their names—each of which are markers of emergent literacy skills, preparing them to become readers.

The science of reading research tells us that students develop into proficient readers when they receive systematic and explicit instruction. In A–Z for Mat Man and Me, students get both. Teachers use direct instruction for explicitly correlating letter sounds and symbols, and children build routines for learning each letter.

PHONICS, Reading, Me and

Reading is not a natural process and does not come easily for all students. The instruction in Phonics, Reading, and Me™ is guided by the science of reading for how students learn to read best—teaching systematic phonics skills in the service of reading comprehension.

Professional Learning

The heart of any learning foundation is a trained, effective teacher. Our workshops provide the best practices that teachers need to teach students early reading skills, helping lead the youngest learners to literacy success. See more on page 106.

There is a key tie between reading and learning to write. Studies have shown that learning to write can improve letter perception, pseudo letter learning, and word reading.”

The ease with which children acquire foundational skills in two domains of early literacy—codefocused skills (letter knowledge and phonemic awareness) and meaning-focused skills (oral language and comprehension)—shapes their future reading development.”

It is now widely acknowledged that reading is a multifaceted process and initial reading instruction should be focused on the research-based practices of decoding and orthographic mapping.”

Sounds, Letters, and Connections

It’s the moment that inspires and humbles every educator–when a child makes the connection between a line they draw, a sound they speak, and the name of a letter. In that moment, a whole new world of possibilities opens and, with systematic and explicit instruction of letter/sound relationships, the path to reading unfolds.

In A–Z for Mat Man and Me, Mat Man, a lovable character that has helped millions of children learn to form letters, now introduces them to reading. His engaging A–Z storybook series, with diverse characters and settings, builds alphabet knowledge through connected text, oral language development, phonemic awareness, and word recognition skills. Differentiation strategies support children where they are on the developmental learning continuum and engaging, multi-modal digital learning activities provide essential practice and skill reinforcement.

BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE LANGUAGE PRINT & TEXT STRUCTURE Sheep often need to have their wool sheared. Having their hair taken off means they don’t get too hot in the summer. Inflatable inner tubes are water toys. Sand can be very hot at a beach in summer or at a tropical location. Sheep is a word that is both singular (one sheep) and plural (three sheep). The word whee can be said when someone sees or does something fun. In this story, belong means something is in the right place, like children belong at school. “This is neat!” means that someone really likes something. Neat also means clean. Speech bubbles are used to show when each character is talking. • Words for sounds beep and bleat appear on the page, outside of the body text. WHAT MAKES THE STUDENT BOOK RICH

Get to know the book so you’re ready to support children when they need it.

BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE LANGUAGE

• Sheep often need to have their wool sheared. Having their hair taken off means they don’t get too hot in the summer.

• Inflatable inner tubes are water toys. Chidren know other meanings for tube

• Sand can be very hot at a beach in summer or at a tropical location.

• Sheep is a word that is both singular (one sheep) and plural (three sheep).

• The word whee can be said when someone sees or does something fun.

• In this story, belong means something is in the right place, like children belong at school.

• “This is neat!” means that someone really likes something. Neat also means clean.

p. 1 Do a pretend shout for exclamations like Whee! pp. 8–9 Notice ey in the word key What sound do you hear? (long e) p. 16 Find three words that rhyme. (feet, neat, meet)

Divide the group. Half reads as the first sheep; the other half reads as the second sheep.

p. 7 First sheep, give your best Please! Second sheep, stomp your feet as you read your line.

p. 13 Shout the car horn’s sound. (Beep! Beep!) pp. 8–9 Try to sound like a sheep when you say the lines. (Bleat! Bleat!)

Check for Comprehension: What is an event at the end that changes one of the sheep? (He gets his wool cut.)

IF NEEDED Decoding Support

If a child is not yet able to decode a word with ee or ea:

• Say words together to point out the difference between short e and long e Examples: met/meet, net/neat, bet/bleat, fed/feed

• Reinforce that the long e sound can be spelled different ways. Find words in the book to show that ee and ea come in the middle (sheep, please) or end of words (see, sea).

• Model sound-by-sound blending, such as /sh/ /ē/ /p/, sheep

• Model onset-rime blending, such as /b/-each, beach

IF NEEDED

Multilingual Learner Support

Point out when future tense appears in the text, starting with p. 4: “I will use it at the beach.” Have children practice building off the “I will” repetition in the book, and challenge them to use long e words, such as: I will eat. I will meet a friend. I will need new socks.

Letter Learning

BACKGROUND Objective Identify the name, sound, and form of capital and lowercase Ll

Exemplar Word lock

Letter Chant capital L, lowercase l /l/, lock

About This Book This story is about Lola, who loves her little lock. When Lola loses the key to her lock, she can’t unlock the box that holds her special things. We see many Ll words as we learn about Lola looking for the key.

About This Letter The sound /l/ is a continuous sound, which means it can be held continuously for several seconds. Continuous sounds are usually the easiest to learn. As children say

DURING READING (5–7 minutes)

First Read: Read Aloud

The teacher’s guide features instruction on how to best use the program’s components for emerging readers and developing readers. Teachers are equipped with guided lessons on letter learning and meaning making.

Letter Learning Ll

• Set children up for listening. Say: Listen to find out where Lola finds the key to her lock.

Read the story all the way through, pausing only to show the pictures on each page.

Ask: Where did Lola find the key to her lock? (in the laundry)

Second Read: Read Along

• Set children up to interact with each page as you reread the book. Say: This time, listen and look for words that begin with the letter Ll

Emerging Readers

Have children listen and follow as you read.

Children can make an L shape with their left hand every time they hear or see an Ll word. Stop to find words that begin with Ll Use these prompts as models. Say: o p. 6: Find two words that start with a lowercase l on these pages. Say them with me. (lock, large) p. 8: There are two Ll words on this

air trace or trace in their own books.

• Talk about names that start with L, like Lola and Lewis Set the Purpose Go to p. 3. Point to the lock picture. Remind children that you use a lock to keep other people from opening something.

• Have children say the word lock with you. Say: Whenever you hear the word lock, think of the /l/ sound that stands for l

• Tell children that you are going to read the book two times.

The first time, children will listen to the story. The second time, children will go back to each page for letter learning.

Review

Ask children to recall the gist. Ask: Who is this story mostly about?

(Kaya) What does Kaya get for the kid on the dock? (the kite)

Build Knowledge

Share these facts to help children understand the story.

• The story is set on and around a river or lake in a city like Chicago. Kayak rentals and kayaking clubs have grown in popularity in many cities.

• Kayaks have a long history. They were likely first used by the Inuit of Greenland. Kayaks are typically built for one person but can be built for two or even three people. A kayak is similar to a canoe, but the top is covered with an opening where the kayaker sits.

• People can use kayaks for transportation, for fun, and for exercise. They can be used in rivers, lakes, or even in the ocean.

In the story, a kite drops into the water. You fly a kite so that the wind pushes against it. The kite should be tilting slightly, with the top leaning forward, so that the wind also lifts the kite. If the wind stops or the angle of the kite changes, it might drop.

Set the Purpose

• Explain that you will read aloud and stop to talk about where Kaya is and what she does there.

• Say: As we read, listen for where Kaya is and how she helps someone.

ELL Scaffold Visuals:

Developing Readers Encourage children to read as much of the story as they can on their own.

• Children can search for words that begin with capital L and lowercase as they read. Invite volunteers to read Ll words they know.

• Use these prompts as models. Say: o p. 4: How many times do you hear the /l/ sound in Lola? (two) Have children find Ll twice in the word, noting both the beginning

(3–5 minutes)

Oral Language: Review Story Elements Talk about the setting in the story and what Kaya does there. Encourage children to use words from the book. Ask:

o Where does Kaya paddle her kayak? (on a river or lake)

o What clues tell you the lake is in the middle of a city? (There are tall buildings all around and a lot of people.)

o Where does the kite fall? (into the water)

o Why is Kaya able to get the kite for the kid? (She is already close to the water.)

• Now that you’ve talked about the setting for the book, prepare children to practice recalling where the story takes place on their own. Turn to p. 97 to prepare children for using the practice book

SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING

• Review the habit of Kindness with children. See p. 23 in this teacher’s guide for the definition.

• Discuss the Figuring Out Feelings questions in the back of the student book. Encourage children to use their facial expressions to show how Kaya feels. Say:

o We can show kindness by doing something to help another person, even when it’s hard for us to help them. How does Kaya show kindness to the kid in the story? (Kaya gets the kite out of the water and gives it back to the kid.) Is it easy for Kaya to get the kite? (No.) Why not? (She gets out of her kayak and into the river; she gets all wet.)

o Can you think of a time when you helped somebody, even when it was a hard thing to do?

• Use the Kindness graphic organizer on p. 200 in this teacher’s guide to write or draw about how Kaya shows kindness in the story. Children can use the back of the page to write or draw about their own experiences.

Talk about story elements: characters, setting, and events. Review that the setting is where and when a story takes place. Ask: Where does this story take place? (in a kayak, on a river or lake)

• Tell children that as you read the story again together, they should think about the setting.

DURING READING (5–7 minutes)

Read Aloud Invite children to interact with words and pictures. Use these prompts as models. Say:

• pp. 4–5: These pages show the setting for the story. Where is Kaya? (in a kayak, on a river or lake) Look around in the picture. Do you think the story will take place on a tropical island or a city? (a city) pp. 8–9: Notice where Kaya is in the picture. What does she see? (She sees the kite in the water.)

• p. 10: The words on this page tell us that the kid is sad. Why is the kid sad? (The kid’s kite is in the water.)

What do you see in the picture that tells you the kid is sad? (The kid is frowning.) Let’s frown like the kid.

• p. 12: Is Kaya still in the kayak? (No.) Where is she? (in the water) Why is she in the water? (She is getting the kite.)

• p. 13: Who does Kaya give the kite to? (the kid) Is the kid happy? (Yes.) How do you know? (The kid is smiling.)

• p. 14: Look at the picture. Everyone is happy. Why is Kaya happy? (Kaya is happy because she helped the kid.)

Without Tears Printed in the U.S.A. | LWT3601 | 10.2018 LWTears.com | 888.983.8409 ColorNamePlates_TX_Spanish_9.17.18.indd 1 10/1/18 Without 2018Learning OUTLINED ARTWORK Spanish Kindergarten Teacher’s Kit Grade: K SKTKIT Spanish Transitional K Teacher’s Kit Grade: TK STKTKIT Spanish 1st Grade Teacher’s Kit Grade: 1 S1TKIT Spanish 2nd Grade Teacher’s Kit Grade: 2 S2TKIT Spanish 3rd-4th Grade Teacher’s Kit Grade: 3–4 S3-4TKIT • • • • • • • • • GRAY BLOCK PAPER 3 Types of Practice Sheets – 35 Pages of Each getsetforschool.com | 301.263.2700 | hwtears.com Printed in the U.S.A. | Starting Corner a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a

Like Mary’s little lamb, Maria’s llama follows her to school, much to the delight of the children. The teacher sends him outside, but he waits for Maria outside. Genre: Fiction Domains Social-Emotional Learning: Persistence Social Studies: Self and Family Vocabulary fleece lingered llama patiently snow FIRST READ Objective: To retell the plot and answer questions about details and key ideas. Show Maria Had a Little Llama Point out the llama and explain it’s an animal found in South America. In this story, Maria has a llama that follows her to school. Conduct a picture walk. Point out that Maria lives in a village in Peru. Call attention to the style of dress and other things specific to the culture. Show Peru on a map and where it is in relation to where the children live. While Reading (Read both English and Spanish.) Make comments and ask questions about characters and plot. What is Maria’s llama like? Why does Maria’s llama follow her to school? What do the other children think about Maria’s llama? Why does the llama have to go outside? How does Maria feel when she sees her llama waiting for her outside of school? Conclusion Ask questions that require explanations, and model your thinking. Why would the school not allow pets? I’m thinking the children would find it hard to pay attention to their teacher and want to play with the pets instead. Why is Maria sad when the teacher sends her llama out? I’m thinking she might be worried he will get lost or be sad without her. • Why do you think her llama waited for her? I’m thinking that the llama loved her and knew she would come out sooner or later. Introducing: Assessment Accelerator

This dedicated module builds online test-taking skills for students in grades 3–5. In these new activities, students will practice common online testing questions using skills that are required on standard assessments.

Delivering Results That Matter

Students using Keyboarding Without Tears are regularly assessed for speed and accuracy as they type. Progress in these areas is assessed through Spot Checks for Speed and Accuracy, which students will practice throughout their 36-week instruction.

Depending on the grade level, students will be assessed through skill checks in their ability to type letters, words, sentences, and paragraphs.
