Winter is just around the corner and we’ve dedicated this issue to everything you need to rug up and keep warm! And there is nothing quite like curling up under a quilt and crafting – I think winter is my ultimate time for crochet and stitcheries as it’s just so comforting! I also love buying loads of wool when all the amazing new shades for the season come out. I think I’m averaging making two scarves every winter at the moment and I’ve started on yet another afghan rug. I think crochet is actually an addiction no-one tells you about! And if you need some new supplies to get you inspired, be sure to pop by our store at patchworkandcraft.com.au.

This is also my last issue as the editor of Handmade. After six years the time has come for me to pass the baton on and head off on a new adventure. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading the issues over the years as much as I’ve enjoyed creating them and I’m sure you will love all the things the magazine has in store for you! As always, let us know what you’re planning to make for this winter by dropping by our Facebook page!

NOTIONS & BOOKS Paisley Deluxe Sewing Tin It’s often hard to find a portable sewing kit that not only includes everything you need but also combines the necessities attractively – as every sewing accessory should. This delightful vintage-style sewing kit ticks both boxes, combining a paisley tin with a tiny treasure-trove of notions. A set of 16, 20-metre cotton reels, a thread picker, pink measuring tape, a needlebook complete with assorted needles and threader, safety pins and scissors cover the basics, and the inclusion of a strawberry shaped pincushion, a box of 100 bobble-head pins, assorted buttons and a metal thimble lift this sewing kit well above the average. The Paisley Deluxe Sewing Tin is available from Lark; visit www.larkstore.com.au for more information.

Baby Booties and Socks: 50 Knits for Tiny Toes BY FRÉDÉRIQUE ALEXANDRE With over 50 sweet little knits this book provides dozens of contemporary designs to keep your baby’s tiny feet warm and cosy. Everything from socks to tiny leg warmers is covered; mostly for knitting but there are a few crochet items too. Inside the front cover there is a handy ruler and inside the back cover there’s a great abbreviations chart, both are useful resources to refer to when you start creating. The how-to instructions at the back of the book will give beginners a confidence boost while the more complex patterns will appeal to experts. Each project is cute as a button and each has detailed instructions and patterns. Baby Booties and Socks: 50 Knits for Tiny Toes is published by Search Press; look for it at your local bookstore or online.

The Very Easy Guide to Using Your Sewing Machine BY WENDY GARDINER This user-friendly guide is ideal for the sewing machine novice who wants to learn everything they need to know to get themselves started. Not only does this handbook give you a basic user manual rundown, it also provides nine fantastic projects to get you on your way. The step-by-step instructions are all accompanied by colour photography and terminology, and there’s a glossary and trouble-shooting guide to assist you along the way. If you love to sew but are intimidated by a sewing machine or need a refresher in how they work, you will adore this book. The Very Easy Guide to Using Your Sewing Machine is published by Search Press; look for it at your local bookstore or online.

fast2sew™ Ultimate Seam Guide Your trusty seam ripper is guaranteed to start gathering dust after you get your hands on the fast2sew™ Ultimate Seam Guide. Complete with instructions and piecing tips, this tool is extremely easy to use and will give you perfect seams in no time at all. The template measures seam allowances from 1/8in to 5¼in and the extra long guidelines make block piecing incredibly simple. Self-adhesive strips on the lines allow for even faster stitching as you won’t have to mark lines on the fabric. The flexible plastic means you can cut and customise it to fit your machine and piecing needs. The fast2sew™ Ultimate Seam Guide is available from C & T Publishing; visit www.ctpub.com for more information.
