My name is Han Ngoc Dang. In Vietnamese, Han stands for happiness and pleasure, while Ngoc is a precious gem. I believe in creative visualisation and appreciate every single moment of the present. Coming from a non-art background, yet it cannot stop me from falling in love with the mesmerising beauty of art and the design world. Before I even notice, Architecture has already captured all my heart and mind. Design is a tool to express my vision and thought on a certain political issue, social trend and contemporary art. Of course, the ultimate goal is to deliver a thoughtful contribution to the community. A good design enhances human experience and brings people together. And the designer’s work is to create a seamless design that synthesizes the human needs with art. I love to work directly with the human comfort and research on their motion and emotion in different spaces. It explains why I focus my works in the interior scale. This portfolio documents seven chosen projects within my three years in Architecture school. I hope those works would help summarize my love for Art and Architecture.

Hearth and Home focus on solving the crucial problem of the building: the lack of engagement with the provided activities. The project also aims for a smoother flow of circulation that encourages human interaction with one another. Each activity room is treated as a house unit connecting the others through the junction of angles and materials. The wall and carpet colour, associated with each designated activity, is helpful for the elderly to navigate their way within the building.

The proliferation of clouds and mobile technology, however, has dramatically changed the traditional banking experience, face-to-face interactions with customers is no longer a norm. Customer demand for new and better digital experiences. Consequently, bank has an unprecedented opportunity to redefine the banking experience and re-establish what banking means for their customers.

rejuvenate the hallway for art students
Project Type: Renovate Year: 2015 Location: Fine Art Building, University of Houston 26
TRANSFORMATION is an interior installation intended to revitalise the hallway of the University of Houston - Fine Art Building. Despite the site is situated within a creative environment, the hallway is left unfurnished while the aura is fairly unwelcomed. Utilising the geometrical shape to bring back the creativity and lively vibe of art building. The shape transforms not only in size but also in colours in order to encourage circulation and activities along the hallway.

2. PAT The design exaggerates its volume responding to the light/open areas. It presents the transformation of the new material but still reveals the old material behind. People could interact with the installation while getting through the hallway.

3. SHAPE The pattern inspired by one of the diagram ideas. It marks the changing in size the thickness responding to the linear perspective of the as-built. It gets smaller and less detail further away from the main entrance of the art studio.
The shape of the design responses to the light and shadow of the site. It also interacts with the occupancy of the building. The design extruded outward when the building getting more natural light, yet curves inward around the shaded areas.

of a lost futuristic Vision Project Type: Preservation Year: 2015 Location: Houston, Texas Memories, knowledge, and environments are lost every day. As for Houston specifically, a fast-industrialized city is struggling between the desire of moving forward and the need of preserving its historical root. Not many people are aware of the rich history located in the Sam Houston Park, along its Civic Center district lies multiple historic houses, yet it was once to be known as the Houston Fire Alarm Building, the very first modernist public building erected in town. The current program’s intention is to attract people to downtown, but it ironically disconnects itself from the characteristic of the neighbourhood and goes against the futuristic vision of its previous version.

The Revival re-imagines a new version of the Fire Alarm Building in today context. While bringing back the iconic structure, the project still provides the possibility to attract more visitors. Sam Houston Park is replaced by a Technological Park. The new program continues to celebrate the futuristic vision of the Civic Center via the intuiative exhibitions of technology.

Metaphor Levels Three floors of the building present the growth of technology through time. From the 1st to the 3rd floor, there are the past, present and the future of technology.
Roofless The open roof and no back facade blend the building into the site/nature.
Interior Circulation The central stairway connects all the programs. It creates a smooth transition through spaces.

Situating on the historical site to the East of Houston, the battleship, USS Texas, and the battlefield San Jacinto share the vivid resources to those who interested in War history. However, the main as-builts scattered on the site hardly attract people to explore the entire offered programs. The problem lies in the lack of visual connection between the two landmarks, the battlefield and the battleship. Odyssey offers a new and intuitive experience for the visitor. The project gives the Battlefield and the Battleship a distinctive separation and connecting via the added memorial road.

The memorial road is based on the historical timeline of the ship. It divided into 5 parts which represent 5 different periods of the ship: Fabrication, World War I, World War II, Post-war and the Exhibition. The memorial road gives the visitor a holistic view of the ship to prepare them informatively before they experience the physical structure.

In this project, is a parametric design combines different curves to create a contradiction within a space (void vs solid), yet also an inseparable form. The intention of the project is to view architecture within an installation scale. Inspired by nature, each individual unit is an abstract form of a petal. The void and solid filter the light and form unique shadows casting on the ground. Though the form is curvy and soft, the characteristic of the material (styrene sheets) gives the design structure and space.

Fusion’s main concept is to create an architectural sculpture which embraces the beauty of nature. The repetition of each unit is arranged inversely to mimick the movement of a petal blowing in the wind. The main exhibition set of Fusion consists of three modules hanging vertically on the wall. However, it could be laid horizontally on a flat ground to create a floating effect. Fusion, on the other hand, is an experiment with new material (styrene sheets) and folding techniques to achieve an overall organic form.

Cat House is a 1:1 scale fabricated design based on the logic of Grasshopper. The house consists of 3 Voronoi parts those are attached by screws and nuts. Cat House is simply a private space for the kittie’s everyday activities: eat, sleep, and play. For an easy-access playground, most surfaces are left open. Using wood as the material not only aims for a minimal aesthetic but also create a warm and cosy little nook for the beloved pet.
