ooking is serious. Just ask Food Network. Style is serious, too. Ask Kanye West. Food and fashion, like music, are integral parts of how all people live their daily lives. So how do these two connect as art forms? Everyone has their particulars when it comes to taste. Some like their clothes bright and loud to show off their personality. Others flex a gloomier shade for their wardrobe to keep it stealthy. Your food is not so different. Everyone has that friend who makes all of their food hot. And everyone has that friend who simply detests spicy flavors. It’s all good in our ‘hood. Today is the day you’re going to let your heart decide. The first rule of making steak is attitude. If you’re feeling classy and positive, try out a rare cook. I am a firm believer that the best steaks in the world should be able to taste great rare. Therefore, if you threw a pretty penny on your ribeye, you’ll be able to tell because most of the authentic flavor will lie in the rare stage. And remember, the best part of cooking your steak rare is that you can always throw it back on the grill if you want a little less pink. If you’re in a sunshine-y day type of mood, it might be a well-done type of day. A well-done steak takes more chewing but is more enjoyable when cooked and eaten outside. For me, making steak is an occasion and as such should be taken very seriously.

Rich and Rare

This steak has been oveer the fire just long enough to sear it and heat it. All the natural juiced are sealed in and the color in the center is still a bright red but what’s most important is that the meat is no longer raw.

Happy Medium With longer grilling, the steak loses some of the bright red color but still retains all the natural juices. This is my favorite level. It depends what mood I’m in, but you can never go wrong with this classic cook job.

Steak is the favorite food of Americans of all ages. That’s how it’s been since the first prime streer came off the Midwest ranches. There are many ways to cook up a delicious T-bone, but charcoal broiling has been the preferred way to prepare steaks for a while now. Some conoisseurs, self-appointed or elected, shudder at the thought of cooking steak beyond the rare stage. Frankly that’s my choice. I like steak with a “just cooked” flavor and a nice, red color (obviously). But to each his/her own. So cook steaks the way you and your guests like them. I’ve found over the years that steak meals are the perfect time to really get to know someone. Living in a generation that considers Ruby Tuesday’s to be cuisine, (I actually love Ruby’s) it’s hard to get a great group of your friends sitting down all at once. A few sirloins can truly slow down the pace of your rushed daily experience and help you create those nostalgic memories you love to look back on. Good eats!

Done Right

After still longer grilling, the characteristic red color of the beef is now gone. The steak is less juicy and thinner. Long barbecuing has cooked out some of the natural juices. By: Ryan Dennis

Easy. Wear what reflects your mood. Your outfit will reflect your inside. This is how the right outfit can give you the most powerful outlook. Everyday.

t first I was thinking that my color choices would initiate my daily energy. I would choose a color scheme that would give me a positive attitude for the day. These days my mind has changed. After weeks of depending on an outfit to control my power, I realize I was losing a grasp on my style. Your clothes should reflect you everyday. It should not ever be the other way around. I also realized how important is for me to enjoy each color in my repertoire. This is why I always surround myself with colors - starting from my outfit and ending with any other object I buy. And now I’m exploring combinations I’d never fathomed. My imagination is growing brighter and brighter everyday because I’m spending more and more time becoming a more wholesome me. I’d love to hear what your favorite combos are. What’s your favorite color and why? You know mine. Let’s speak in colors! 6

Chugs and Kisses By: Ryan Dennis

The Love Starts Here

here is nothing like a fresh snack. Not fresh as in hip, cool, or whatever other word I can not use to define myself. I am talking about clean, airy, healthy and just plain wholeseome. Chugs and Kisses does exactly that with every dish. Only days ago, during my visit with the company’s headquarters, I came across dozens of snacks, delicacies, cakes and bakes. Nothing stood up against their world-famous Red Velvet Balls. Three words: Yum, yum, yum! No matter who you are, or where you’re from, one taste and you’re hooked for life. The organic milk chocolate outside, which melts in your mouth, would be a treat all

its own. But the quality of the red super-soft inside will make you feel guilty. It, like many of Chugs’ tasty productions are homemade treasures with a hint upper echelon class. It is almost unfair how easily and joyously they produce some of those most delectable foods available to human beings. Their bakery is rather large with its archictecture modern. The aura of each room in their elementary school sized building is pleasant. The smiles of the faculty members says it all: these people enjoy, no, love what they do. How could they not? They eat better than the First Lady herself. Speaking of which, Chugs and Kisses were the official dessert caterers for the White House for an entire week.

1.

After cake is cooked and cooled completely, crumble into large bowl.

2.

Mix thoroughly with 1 can cream cheese frosting. (It may be easier to use fingers to mix together, but be warned it will get messy.)

3. Roll mixture into quar-

ter size balls and lay on cookie sheet. (Should make 45-50. You can get even more if you use a mini ice cream scooper.

4.

Chill for several hours. (You can speed this up by putting in the freezer.)

5.

Melt chocolate in microwave per directions on package.

6.

Roll balls in chocolate and lay on wax paper until firm. (Use a spoon to dip and roll in chocolate and then tap off extra.)

MacArthur Center Mall

M

By: Ryan Dennis

y favorite part of the mall is the people I see. They are trudging under-sized bags reading over-sized ads around. The diversity of departments compliments the differences of style I see in many of I see trudging bags around. Please don’t get me wrong, I do adore small businesses because of their services along with their vital empowerment of the economy. But on this day, I fell prey to one of my innocently guilty pleasures— megastore shopping. For those HBCU’ers who aren’t familiar with the real H.U. and our low-key, remote yet dope neighboring community, let me enlighten thee. Sure, Hampton is our home by the sea but Hampton Roads County without Norfolk is like New York without Brooklyn. I’d say Virginia Beach is like our Manhattan. Off to Norfolk we go. The day is Sunday and the mall is MacArthur. Over-sized vehicles rove garage levels without direction. A young woman manages her bank account transfers on her Smartphone. This prompts me to flip out my wallet to tally up my collegiate chump change. Not much is inside. At any rate, we’re raring to go and ready to shop. I’m usually pretty steady on my feet but I nearly stumble on a befallen chair from the food court while entering the mall. The out of place furniture awakes something in me. I’m now realizing how orderly these establishments usually are. Cue an epiphany; the best part about shopping malls isn’t their colossal collections but their crisp cleanliness.

Getting to Know Your New Go-To Spot

These super-stores harbor thousands of shoppers and staffers who roam through theircorridors day in and night out. Considering the magnitude of janitorial work that goes into a mall; cleanliness seems effortless. Spend three hours in a three-level mall and see maybe one custodian. I’m only wondering how. Come to find out they actually hire academy-trained ninja custodians who snatch up garbage and shoplifters alike. How elaborate can you get?

“A crawl through the mall, all in all, is a ball for us all.”

That was a jest. Some people do not go shopping often. I’m usually one of those people. Regardless of how much money is missing in my wallet,

there is one golden shopping mall rule: You don’t ever leave the mall empty-handed. Although, you do not have to spend any money to take home something of value. Maybe you were cultivating your sense of fashion, perusing the trends of your community, or simply getting some exercise. Leaving with a positive contemplation is imperative. One should always exit with the peace of mind that you spent time your time wisely at an economically important, culturally relevant and at least pretty clean place. I am remembering that time is money and at the very least I’d been spending my time valuably. Appreciation is an ever-present and fulfilling gift you can always offer to yourself— free of charge.

Take a Peek

Dennis Richardson assisted the Taubman Company in the construction and development of the MacArthur Center Mall, an 1,200,000 square foot upscale mall and two adjacent parking structures containing 5,300 spaces. The Mall was completed in 1999.
