How designers can extend their skills beyond the confines of the kitchen, with the likes of home offices and utility rooms

When the phrase “heart of the home” was first coined, little would it be realised just how much activity would be taking place in kitchens. Joining cooking, dining and entertaining has been a need for the kitchen to cater as a classroom for school activities and home office for remote working. According to comparison site finder.com 60% of the UK’s adult population is now working from home and nearly a third (26%) plan to work from home permanently or occasionally after lockdown. Commercial director of Crown Imperial Tony McCarthy comments: “As we embrace a new era of home working, retailers have a valuable opportunity to offer customers an enhanced kitchen scheme that meets their work-life balance.” And national sales manager for UK & Ireland at Pronorm Richard Turner agrees: “Working from home is another consideration that simply cannot be absorbed without good design.”

The Varenna furniture range is shown in an Alaskan Oak finish, with tall units to create elevation and storage space. It also appears on the wall panelling and breakfast bar, which helps the urban kitchen space work in combination with casual seating. Download the brochure at www.rdr.link/KV008

The Vivo kitchen range is shown in Indigo Blue in a matt texture, with a large island. However, the working space is located where kitchen base cabinets and wall units have created a flexible area that can double as a home office. Discover all the kitchen ranges at www.rdr.link/KV009
