Why Cameron Crowe? An idealist who believes that failing is not the end of the world but the beginning of something greater.
How it started Cameron Crowe’s movies are memorable and fun to watch, the always end with a happy note. In a world filled with fear, self-doublt, and even cynicism; it’s endearing to find movies that leave the viewers feeling hopeful and engraved with memorable scenes and music. Unfortuantly, my research led me to read a few negative comments about Crowe’s movies and being critizised for having an idealist point of view. What’s a better way than to remind people of what his movies were all about? hope and music. His movies are far from forgetabble, because we all secretly love to see characters end up happy. We all want to feel like there’s hope and sucess behind everything we come across to. From a design point of view, Cameron Crowe’s style offers a fresh prespective. Using different vernaculars that many people relate to, such as, notes, handwriting, music and even objects from the past. Furthermore, the photography for this project can be bright and personal. Going back to his movies, all his characters seem to be clear about what they want. However, their ‘Uncool’ and always want to belong and look ‘Cool’ but they keep failing, and even when people tell them to give up. They keep their hearts, continue to take the journey and at the end they they get what they want.

Biography Cameron Bruce Crowe is an American director, producer, screenwriter, journalist, author, and actor.
Early life Born in July 13, 1957, in Palm Springs, California, Cameron Crowe is the son of a teacher and a real estate agent. Crowe graduated high school at age 15 and began writing articles for Rolling Stone magazine when he was 16. He briefly attended San Diego City College but Crowe dropped out to pursue his screen writing career. Crowe’s debut screenwriting effort, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, grew out of a book he wrote while posing for one year undercover as a student at Clairemont High School in San Diego, California. Later, he wrote and directed one more high school saga, Say Anything, and then Singles, a story of Seattle twentysomethings that was woven together by a soundtrack centering on that city’s burgeoning grunge music scene. Crowe landed his biggest hit, though, with Jerry Maguire. After this, he was given a green light to go ahead with a pet project, the autobiographical effort Almost Famous. Centering on a teenage music journalist on tour with an up-and-coming band, it gave insight to his life as a 15-year-old writer for Rolling Stone. For his screenplay, he won an Academy Award. Also in late 1999, Crowe’s second book was published, a question and answer session with the film director Billy Wilder entitled Conversations with Wilder.

Creative brief What makes this festival special and different.
Audience A celebration for those who are not afraid to take chances and fail because they know that at the end they will get exactly what they want.
What’s the festival about? Two things, first things first, most of Crowe’s characters always seem to go on a journey of some kind, either traveling or going through the highs and lows of life. Therefore, having the festival as a roadtrip works perfectly for this festival. Getting into a car, listening to music and driving to multiple destinations, but ultimatly learn lessons and make memories. The idea is that, since Cameron Crowe’s characters go through different routes to find what they’re looking for and so can the attendees.

Locations Initially, two different options for the locations. The first one is a road trip to memorable places from the movies which was chosen for this festival. Movie: Say Anything Scene: Llyod driving around town after the breakup. Location: Guild 45th Theatre in Wallingford, Seattle. Movie: Singles Scene: The club where the two lovebirds meet Location: Re-bar, Seattle
The second location which was not chosen, is San Diego Civic Theater; this place holds a place in Cameron Crowe’s heart because “In 1972. I was a big fan of and was still in high school when the Eagles came to the San Diego Civic Theatre, it was a few blocks from my house. I bought a ticket, and brought my tape recorder.” Dates Two dates were considered, either on July 13th, the day he was born or March 25th, the day he won an Oscar for writing Almost Famous. Finally, July13th through July19th was chosen. Additional Events

The thread What holds these films together thematically? What was/is the director’s overall vision? Is there undiscovered link between their films?
They all feature a white sensitive male who’s an outcast; whom a single parent, involved with a single parent or a single parent himself. The main character fails really hard but takes the journey to find what they’re looking for even when others tell him to give up. They almost always listen to their hearts and keep trying, until they succeed and get what they’re looking for. I discovered that most of his characters are taking photos, looking at photos, or having photos taken of them. They might all be representing hope? Memories of the past are perhaps his way of having hope for the future? Summary A male who’s an outcast, fails hard but rise higher because of faith and hope. Music and Photos are a reminder of something good. Getting Specific Who are they? Misfits, Battered idealist. What happens? Who want something however they keep failing, and go through the highs and lows of life What happens at they end? Because they believe in themselves, they end up getting what they want and more.

Thinking about the threads 1. Being an outcast himself, Crowe explores the journey of misfits in the search for love and success. 2. Cameron Crowe’s optimism appears in his films through featuring battered idealists who fail miserably; eventually rise higher. His love for music shows through memorable soundtracks; ‘a nostalgic lens of his own making.’ 3. Misfits, who struggle through life but when they surrender to their softer side and vulnerability, their lives begin to change for the better. 4. Outcasts who struggle to find themselves in the world, they fail miserably but they never give up, because they believe that it’s about the journey not the destination. Eventually they rise and get what they want.

Logo exploration Key words for the logo were, tape recorder, typewriter, concert stamp, sharpie, handwritten and personal.
How it started As the thread was evolving, the logos were determined by using set of key words that fit both the guiding narrative as well as Cameron Crowe’s style in movies. Each keyword represented a theme, a mood and an over look visual system. The initial logos combined both hand written and a mechanical typeface. Initial idea Many of the first logos were achieved by handwriting the words and turning them into a vector. The rest were mechanical typefaces that were manipulated on illustrator. Such as the typewriter feel and the stamp. However, the handwritten logos gave a nice feel except they started to look like a Wacom rather than a sharpie. That led to more exploration. Final idea The final logo was achieved by cutting up the marker and leaving it to dry, soon the sharpness of the marker started to take place; giving the logo interesting textures. Furthermore, the typeface Serifa was added to the logo to give it a stronger balance between “Human” and “Computer”; more like a tape recorder to be exact, with broken edges and dashes.

Poster exploration What could the character be doing, looking at, and even taking pictures of.
How it started The idea behind the poster is to show his passion, what is he looking at? that thing that he loves looking at while chasing his story, and that is music. Initial idea A variety of possible images were used, specifically those that had a road trip feel such as building, roads, light poles, electric wires, backstage, taking notes, chasing or running after something. While using design to add a feel of documentation, such as frames and light leaks. Final Idea The chosen image for the poster is a person on stage but the image itself has the feel of being backstage, the feeling of that journalist with his VIP access watching his favorite band perform. The simple light leak added to the image is to show the brightness of the place and being under the spot lights. It also evokes the feeling of being hopeful.

Catalog Three stages to a journey, the beginning, during and the end.
How it started Three stages of the journey, the beginning, during and the end result. As well as objects that can be found in a Cameron Crowe movie. Initial idea During the journey, a notebook is going to be used to document memories and thoughts. During the journey, purchasing or receiving an item is most likely, in this case, a 12� book that resembles a vinyl package is deal, while the end result of this journey could be a newspaper or a mini published. Final idea A notebook or a scrapbook as a catalog was the most appropriate because it linked back to the thread; the journalist on the road. The design involved handwritten notes, small inserts and have that notebook look; having things shoved inside a notebook.

DVD Package Personal, memorable and special were the main idea behind the packaging.
How it started Music was the main theme behind the concept, an ideal product that can be taken away and be kept somewhere special. Initial logos Mini vinyls for the DVDs, to mimic the feel of old records. Final logos A regular 12” package, has the feel of a vinyl record as well as a memorabilia. All DVDs will be stored inside and each Film label will have a ‘memorable’ picture from the films. The featured films, had an object that symbolized something meaningful to the characters. For example, in the movie Say Anything, the pen was significant to the Lloyd, Diane, and Diane’s father. Diane’s father asked his daughter to break up with Lloyd and hands her a pen to give it to him and tells him to write her. At the end of the movie, the pen was shown again and that is when Diane visits her father in person and gives him the same pen back.

Schedule ‘Journal’ A format that can be carried and used to document and plan the journey.
How it started Newsprint sheet is the symbol of journalism and the rolling stone back in 1970s. Initial idea A folded 13x19” newsprint sheet that is going to be rolled and wrapped with an elastic band and placed on the side of a messenger bag. Final idea A folded 12x9” newsprint sheet that is going to be folded, has content to be read on the way to the movie screening locations and pages to be used for documenting the journey and since attendees will be on the road for a few days, some of those days can be planned according to personal choice.

HONEST AND UNMERCIFUL Also, at 19, I wrote a story called “How I Learned About Sex”, which was hampered by writer’s block until I just gave up and wrote it as if I was writing a letter to a friend. And really that was another breakthrough, it felt like I had found a writing voice that might stretch beyond rock journalism. The real tone of that article is the same tone as the movies I’ve made for this one.
Todd Gilchrist talks with C rowe abou t the f ilm ’s inspirati
When was that moment for you when you went from being a fan to being a journalist? Was there a moment, where you felt you really made that transition? There are a couple really, one was the first cover story assignment on the Allman Brothers Band, which became the basis for much of Almost Famous. On the eve of leaving the tour with a ton of interview tapes and research, Allman actually asked for all of my tapes back, believing that I was actually an undercover cop sent to spy on the band. The band had been burned by a Rolling Stone reporter before, and he had become worried that this too would be a doomed endeavor. I was incredibly disillusioned, and expected to be banned from writing for Rolling Stone over the incident, which’s hard.Luckily, Gregg returned the tapes a couple days later, and blamed it on exhaustion and personal confusion. I was grateful, but the lesson was learned each assignment would be different, you know with a different mix of personalities and a duty to deliver the story. And with the help of Ben Fong Torres, we put the article in shape, developed a clear eyed perspective on the band, and I’ve never looked back.
The “Tiny Dancer” sequence is one of the truly wonderful sequences in cinema of the last few decades. Was there any experience that inspired it? So, did you ever experience a moment where a song sort of brought a band together in the way that Elton John’s song did in that movie scene? Many times. Sometimes it was a jam session, sometimes a song on the radio, and sometimes music that a band traveled with Led Zeppelin were very enamored of Joni Mitchell, Bob Marley and the Guess Who. Much more than drugs or sex, music was always the baseline passion of the groups I covered. Which is not to say that there weren’t wild days and nights of debauchery, there were, some of which I witnessed and some of which I saw the effects of the next day but in the years of covering and touring with artists for RS and other publications. I never ran across a single musician who wasn’t transported while talking about or playing music they loved. It wasn’t a job to me really, It was more like a miracle of serendipity. What to you was perhaps the most painfully honest thing you included in the film about your own experiences? Probably the relationship with Anita, a character based on my sister. Music was a really big common thread in our family, and sometimes our best way of expressing passion and love to each other.

Tickets ‘mini notepad’ Personal and small were the main focus of this concept.
How it started Different ideas were considered for the tickets, such as backstage VIP passes, wrist bands rewinded in a VHS tape, tickets stored in a notepad packaging. Initial idea Two concepts stood out, the first one was wristband tickets that can be rewinded inside a VHS tape to store while the second is more of a mini notepad that the attendees can carry with them. Final idea A mini notepad that has a small timetable, tickets taped on the pages and empty ‘thoughts’ pages to be used during the films or festival; to give it that ‘journalism’ feel. The tickets are taped on the pages so that they could look similar to a mini scrap book.

How it started The VHS tape idea for the tickets did not fall through because attendees might have trouble using it and so the idea of being able to ‘rewind’ was a great fit for the thread and the festival’s name. Initial idea Use a cassette tape with a walkman as a package or a USB/AUX cassette tape. Final idea A mini usb cassette tape, be able to pull the chord and rewind it back, and can be played in the car.

How it started Crowe’s characters always seem to go on a life changing journey and so I wanted my film festoval to encourge people to take a roadtrip to the festival. Initial idea Using handwrittern quotes from the movie on the ads. But, the handwritten style competed with my logo. Final idea A simple ad that is close to the poster but has less information, one on a newspaper about music and the other one is on a billboard on the road. The third ad is placed in a location that could possibly look like a small space in an arena of some sort.

How it started The idea of journalism when it comes to paper, objects, and even texture. Initial idea Notepad as a business card that has the yellow paper used in the catalog. Newsprint sheet for both the letter head and envelope. Final idea The notepad as a business card remained but slightly bigger and can be torn off, Newsprint for the letter head and a regular paper for the envelope because it was more sturdy.
