As the UK population ages, people will be expected to work for longer, well into their 60s and 70s and beyond, when long term health conditions could limit a person's ability to work and support themselves. In turn, absenteeism caused by these illnesses will become an increasing burden on employers. Preventing people from developing these conditions in the first place, and supporting those already diagnosed to manage their conditions more effectively, will help to ensure a healthier ageing workforce. At the start of your journey, our Workforce Health Co-ordinator will help you to identify those key health issues that are a priority for you and your employees. For example: ¥¥ ¥¥ ¥¥ ¥¥

Do you have high absenteeism due to employees' back pain? Do you want to promote positive mental health in your workplace? Do you have a large number of smokers in your workforce? Have employees expressed an interest in an in-house healthy weight programme?

This can be done through a Health Needs Assessment questionnaire, or through NHS Health Checks, which are an ideal way of building a detailed health profile of your workforce. Based on the outcomes from these assessments, we can develop a tailored workforce health programme.

Mental Health Awareness for Managers

We use a variety of resources to engage with people, including our Alcohol Free bar which offers mocktails as a way to begin a conversation about alcohol consumption. We can offer eligible people aged between 40 and 74 a FREE NHS Health Check that checks height, weight, BMI and blood pressure as well as a simple finger prick blood test which gives us an instant reading for cholesterol and blood sugars. Our fully trained health trainers can then offer your staff bespoke lifestyle advice according to the results. NHS Health Checks are an ideal way to assess the health and wellbeing needs of your workforce. Lung Age Tests are an ideal way to start a conversation about lung health, even for non-smokers. We can offer anyone over the age of 35 a FREE lung age check using our spirometry machines and provide general lifestyle advice, including information and advice about stopping smoking if appropriate. Sessions can be delivered in-house to staff who want to quit smoking. If you have a minimum of 5 people who want to sign up, we can arrange on-site sessions for up to 10 weeks. We offer support and advice on how to quit smoking and can advise on Nicotine Replacement Therapies (NRT). Advice sessions are free, but individuals may have to pay for NRT products, unless they are exempt. Mental health awareness training is designed to provide adults with knowledge and skills to have wellbeing conversations with friends/family/ colleagues/staff and to know where they can appropriately sign post people in need of support for their mental health. This training provides learners with additional skills to progress wellbeing conversations onto asking about suicidal thoughts. The training offers practical advice and guidance around asking about suicide and the language to use. Please note it does not go into any details about suicide and suicide techniques, nor does it contain any graphic images. This session is designed to help managers understand mental health, the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems and how to have wellbeing conversations with staff. It also provides strategies to support staff who are experiencing poor mental health.

Time to Change Employer Pledge

We can support your organisation to complete the Time to Change Employer Pledge which involves developing an action plan to get your employees talking about mental health. Encouraging staff to talk about mental health can make a real difference to sickness absence rates, presenteeism levels, staff wellbeing and productivity. The Alcohol Identification and Brief Advice (IBA) training provides participants with the skills and knowledge to identify individuals whose drinking might be impacting on their health at an early stage. Participants will be able to deliver opportunistic, simple, structured advice. Very Brief Advice (VBA) training on smoking helps to identify those individuals who wish to stop smoking by assessing current and past smoking behaviour, providing information on the consequences of smoking, the benefits of quitting and options for support. At the end of this 1.5 hour session, participants will: ¥¥ Have increased their knowledge and understanding of the signs and symptoms of various cancers (inc. lung, breast, bowel, prostate, cervical etc.) ¥¥ Be confident in delivering brief advice to the public and colleagues and making every contact count ¥¥ Be able to talk about participation in national cancer screening programmes and tackle resistance ¥¥ Encourage colleagues to create an action plan for their workplace directly linked to improving uptake of screening The aim of this one day course is to improve knowledge and understanding of the three main health issues amongst older people in Halton; Loneliness, Dementia and Falls. The training provides practical skills using tools to identify people who may be at risk of falls, loneliness or memory loss. Delegates will also learn about local referral pathways & signposting to local falls, loneliness & memory loss services. For organisations who work with older people. The training focuses on the importance of staying active as we age and the factors associated with reducing falls such as environment, medication, hydration, nutrition, exercise and sight checks. Participants will be more aware of how they can play a part in helping the over 55s keep active and stay independent. Training can also be delivered directly to the public if required.
