FLEA SEASON
As the weather warms up, fleas become more active and can be a nuisance to both pets and pet owners. Fleas are tiny insects that feed on the blood of animals and can cause itching, irritation, and even disease. In order to keep your pets and home fleafree, it's important to take preventative measures.
To start, it's important to know when flea season typically occurs. According to the American Kennel Club, flea season can vary depending on the climate and location, but generally runs from spring to fall In warmer areas, flea season can last year-round
One of the best ways to prevent fleas is to keep your pets on a regular flea prevention regimen There are many different types of flea prevention products available, including topical treatments, collars, and oral medications. Talk to your veterinarian to determine which option is best for your pet.
According to the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC), flea prevention products can be up to 99% effective at preventing fleas. Additionally, flea prevention products can help protect your pet from other parasites, such as ticks and heartworms
Flea season is upon us:
Do you know to protect your pets and home?
In addition to flea prevention products, it's important to keep your home clean and tidy Fleas can lay eggs in carpets, bedding, and furniture, so it's important to vacuum regularly and wash your pet's bedding frequently You may also want to consider using a flea spray or fogger in your home to kill any existing fleas and prevent new ones from hatching
If you do find fleas on your pet, it's important to act quickly. Fleas reproduce rapidly, so the longer you wait, the worse the problem can become. Use a flea comb to remove visible fleas, and give your pet a bath with a flea shampoo. You may also want to consider taking your pet to the vet for a flea treatment
By taking preventative measures and acting quickly if you do find fleas, you can help protect your pet and home from these pesky insects.

DUVESSA: ON THE MEND
In a world where hope can often feel dim, there was a brave little dog named Duvessa who triumphed against all odds Duvessa's journey began when she was found tied to the gate of the Humane Humane Society (HHS), her delicate frame and once lustrous coat ravaged by a severe skin condition It was a heartbreaking sight that stirred a collective determination among the HHS team.
With unwavering dedication HHS along with the help of a dedicated foster family, nurtured Duvessa back to health, offering her the warmth of love and the expert care she desperately needed Through countless vet visits, soothing baths and nutritious meals donated by Royal Canine, Duvessa's once scaly and irritated skin began to heal Her spirit, too, bloomed like a flower in the sun
As days turned into weeks, Duvessa's transformation became a testament to the power of resilience Her coat beginning to grow healthy, each strand whispering of her newfound radiance With each passing day, Duvessa's weight continues to steadily increase, her once frail body filling out with vitality and strength.
Duvessa's story reminds us that even in the face of darkness, there is always a flicker of hope It is through love and compassion that we can mend the broken, granting them a chance to shine brightly once more
MEET THE NEW CEO OF HHS
Halifax Humane Society has recently appointed a new CEO, Adam Leath, to lead the organization. I sat down with Adam to learn more about his background and his plans for the future of the shelter.
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about your background and how you came to be the CEO of HHS?
A: Sure! I have been working in animal welfare for over 20 years, including about 17 years directly in the field My experience consists of acting as a direct responder to animal cruelty investigations in an enforcement capacity, managing the operations of a municipal animal services department, implementing lifesaving programs to increase live release rates, teaching in numerous state certification courses for animal control, code enforcement, and law enforcement officers, proficiency in the process of evidence collection and scene documentation, and providing disaster relief work
When the opportunity for CEO of HHS became available, it truly was a no-brainer All of my previous work experience aligns wonderfully with the organizations operations
Q: What are some of the goals you have for the shelter under your leadership?
A: My main goal is to increase the services we provide for the community I believe that every animal deserves a chance at a happy life, and we need to do everything we can to make that happen. In addition, I want to improve the quality of care that we provide to our animals and make sure that they are getting everything they need to be healthy and happy We have a responsibility to provide unparralled care to the pets at our facilities.
Q: What are some of the challenges that you see facing the shelter?
A: One of the biggest challenges is funding Animal shelters all over the world rely heavily on donations and grants to operate, and it can be difficult to secure the funding needed to provide the best care possible. Another challenge is: there are always new animals coming into the shelter, which can be overwhelming at times During Covid the workforce has really suffered and staffing is quite challenging all over the country.
Q: What are some of the ways that you plan to address these challenges?
A: We are going to be launching a fundraising campaign to help raise money for the shelter We will also be reaching out to local businesses and organizations to see if they would be willing to donate to the shelter In terms of the influx of animals, we are going to be working on increasing adoptions and finding foster homes for animals that need a little extra care.
Q: Can you expand on those a bit more?
A: Absolutely, to expand further on the fundraising campaign, we will be using social media platforms to spread more awareness about the shelter We will be sharing stories and pictures of the animals in the shelter to encourage people to donate We will be reaching out to our local businesses' and organizations to see if they would be willing to donate to the shelter. We will also be partnering with local businesses to host fundraising events where a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the shelter
To address the challenge of an influx of animals, we will be working on increasing adoptions by hosting more adoption events and partnering with other animal welfare organizations We will be working on finding more foster homes for animals that need a little extra care and building a more robust volunteer program We will also be working on educating the community about the importance of spaying and neutering their pets to help prevent overpopulation. We will be hosting educational events and workshops to teach people about the benefits of spaying and neutering their pets
Q: What message would you like to share with the community about HHS?
A: I want the community to know that HHS is here to help and to also be a resource We are dedicated to providing the best possible care to our pets and finding them loving forever homes We can't do it alone, though Animal overpopulation is a community-wide problem and we need your help Whether its through spaying and neutering your owned animals, volunteering, donating or just by spreading the word, we need your help
Vershurn: Adam, thank you so much I cant tell you how excited the team and I are to have you joining the team
Adam: Honestly, the pleasure was all mine Thanks Vershurn.
THE Mutt Strutt
We had a great turnout for our 2023 Mutt Strutt Over 250 participants brought their furry friends and enjoyed a wonderful day in the sun It was great to see so many different breeds and their owners having a good time The weather was perfect, and the atmosphere was electric We cant wait to do it again next year!
A special thank you to our Presenting Sponsor, Subaru of Daytona along with all the wonderful vendors and remaining sponsors We couldn't have done it without you
The Border Collie 15
In a recent animal rescue operation in Dania County, dozens of hoarded dogs were rescued from a home
The situation was dire, as the dogs were living in unsanitary conditions and were not receiving proper care. Officials say the dogs were living in severely crowded conditions and were not very well socialized with people. One dog was dead inside the home and authorities said it appeared that some of the other dogs might have been feeding on it
Thanks to the efforts of multiple animal rescue organizations, many of the dogs have been given a second chance
HHS was one of the organizations that stepped up to help We were able to take in 15 of the rescued dogs. The dogs were given the medical care they so desperately needed and were placed in loving homes
The rescue operation was a reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership It's crucial that pet owners provide their animals with the care and attention they need When pet owners are unable to care for their animals, there are resources available to help Animal rescue organizations like HHS play a critical role in providing care and finding homes for animals in need
The rescued dogs are now living happy, healthy lives with their new families They are a testament to the power of animal rescue and the importance of providing a safe and loving home for animals.
However, the responsibility doesn't solely rest on the shoulders of these rescue organizations. As a society, we must all take part in promoting responsible pet ownership, spreading awareness about adoption, and advocating for stronger animal welfare laws
Florida Animal Friend receives $25.00 for each spay/neuter license plate that is purchased (and renewed each year.) These funds are used exclusively to help end cat and dog overpopulation by increasing spay and neuter surgeries in the state. Get yours today!

ITTEN EASON
Kitten season a time when feline populations surge due to a peak in mating and birthing—is a crucial period for animal shelters worldwide.
Understanding Kitten Season:
Kitten season typically occurs during spring and summer when cats naturally breed due to longer daylight hours and favorable weather conditions This leads to an influx of pregnant cats and litters of kittens entering shelters According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), the exact timing and intensity of kitten season can vary depending on geographical location, climate, and other factors
The Impact on Animal Shelters:
Kitten season places a tremendous burden on animal shelters, as they face an overwhelming number of kittens in need of care
Some key challenges faced by shelters during this period include:
Space constraints: The sudden surge in feline populations strains the capacity of shelters, which may struggle to accommodate and provide adequate living space for the increased number of kittens
Increased resource requirements: The influx of kittens necessitates additional resources such as food, litter, medical supplies, and veterinary care, resulting in additional financial strain on shelters
Staff and volunteer demands: The care, socialization, and medical attention needed for these kittens requires additional personnel, often leading shelters to rely heavily on dedicated staff and volunteers
Providing Care for Kittens:
Animal shelters play a vital role in ensuring the well-being of kittens during this challenging season They offer a range of services, including:
Medical care: HHS provides vaccinations, deworming, and spaying/neutering services to ensure the health and welfare of the kittens
Socialization and enrichment: Shelters focus on socializing kittens to prepare them for adoption by providing human interaction, playtime, and exposure to various stimuli
Foster programs: Many shelters like HHS have foster programs where volunteers care for kittens in their homes, providing a nurturing environment until they are ready for adoption
Adoption efforts: Shelters actively promote the adoption of kittens, organizing adoption events, partnering with local pet stores, and utilizing online platforms to connect potential adopters with these adorable furballs
The Importance of Spaying and Neutering: One effective long-term strategy to address the challenges of kitten season is spaying and neutering
Animal shelters advocate for spaying and neutering cats to prevent unplanned pregnancies and reduce the number of homeless kittens HHS offers low-cost or in some cases subsidized spay/neuter at our Redinger Spay/Neuter Clinic, hoping to encourage more pet owners to help reduce the intake strains through sterilization
Kitten season presents animal shelters with numerous challenges, but their unwavering commitment to the well-being of these tiny felines remains commendable By understanding the impact of kitten season, supporting shelters through adoption, fostering, donations, and promoting responsible pet ownership, we can collectively make a difference and ensure that every kitten finds a safe and loving forever home
Here's how individuals can contribute:
Adoption: Consider adopting a kitten from a shelter instead of purchasing one By adopting, you provide a loving home to a deserving kitten and help make space for other cats in need
Foster: If you have the time and resources, volunteer as a foster caregiver Fostering kittens not only saves lives but also eases the burden on overcrowded shelters
Donations: Contribute to shelters through monetary donations, supplies, or volunteering your time. Every contribution helps shelters provide the necessary care and resources for kittens
Spay/Neuter: Ensure your own cats are spayed or neutered and encourage others to do the same, preventing future overpopulation and reducing the strain on shelters
Spread the word: Use your social media platforms or personal networks to raise awareness about kitten season and the importance of adopting from shelters Share information about available kittens, adoption events, and success stories to inspire others to consider adopting
Remember, even small actions can make a significant impact on the lives of kittens and the work of animal shelters By getting involved and advocating for their well-being, you become an essential part of the solution during kitten season
