Interior Design Portfolio: Intro & Table of Contents

Introduction The design of interiors affect and impact people and their everyday lives. The impact of a space that is properly and uniquely designed is something that has always interested me and drives my desire to be an interior designer. We spend so much of our lives in a built environment, and I believe that because of this, design is so powerful and it can greatly affect our behaviors, productivity, and quality of life. My goal as a designer is to create spaces that enrich everyday lives and create positive environments that have a lasting impact on people. This portfolio documents my desire to be an effective designer in creating spaces that are functional, sustainable, innovative, and ultimately enhance people’s lives. I am very organized, self motivated, and detail oriented. I am constantly looking for areas I can improve in and better myself as a designer. I seek

to eventually work alongside a talented team of designers to further my skills, in the hopes of fulfillng my dreams of becoming a designer, who not only designs spaces, but leaves a lasting impact through my work.

Next Corporate Office Completed Fall Year 3

The corporate office for NEXT is designed with the five space typologies in mind: workspace, meeting space, social space, resource and support, and rejuvenation space. These typologies are accomplished through design techniques including collaboration, technology, lighting, well-being, and inclusion. Much like the nervous system is broken up into three parts- the central, peripheral, and autonomic systems, each controlling their own parts of the body- the space planning of the building is organized with these parts in mind. These three parts of the nervous system work together to allow the body to think, feel, and move. Therefore, the office is designed to emphasize spaces that work together as a

01

collective whole to create an adaptable environment filled with innovation, collaboration, and inspiration. These spaces accomplish this through the use of adaptable office furniture, with a variety of postures and textures, as well as a variety of spaces to work in or rejuvenate in. The office also includes unique lighting fixtures, furniture systems, and architectural features that mimic the pathways of the nervous system and electrical impulses in the brain.

IN-BETWEEN S PA C E This In-Between space supports individuals and small groups who desire to extend learning before, during, and after meetings. This space typology supports impromptu collaboration. The In-Between space pictured is a fun, cushioned, benching option that is visually interesting and playful.

RECEPTION A full time receptionist resides in this space. As people enter this area of the NEXT office, the goal is for them to feel welcomed into a space that is warm and lively through its plant wall and low ceilings. The low swooping ceiling compresses visitors only for them to be released into the next space, much

like Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural concept.

The Sunshine Wellness House Completed Spring Year 2

The design of the wellness house is a modern/ traditional style that draws inspiration from the sun. This inspiration is derived from the idea of good energy, life, and strength that is much like the good energy we receive from the sun. The floor plan mimics the flow and shape of the sun and its rays including curved walls and openings as well as large curved windows that allow natural light in. The living area acts as the main central area of the house with the other sections of the house “branching off” mimicking the idea of sun rays. The style of the house consists of mixed materials that are natural and

02

sustainable with a neutral scheme. This neutral scheme is mixed with pops of deep, rich color. The design encourages life and wellness through layout and space planning, through the way it invites sunlight in with its large windows, and through the spaces and detail items that encourage energy and activity. Just as the sun exudes feelings of warmth and peaceful energy the goal of this design is to emulate these feelings and create a space that flows, is peaceful, aesthetic, and also promotes both physical and mental well-being for the occupants.

The Malagan Loft Completed Fall Year 2

The design of the loft is a primitive modern look to convey aspects from the culture of Papua New Guinea. Drawing inspiration from the carved Malagan and the vibrant colors of Papua New Guinea; geometric patterns, natural materials of wood and leather, grass and woven textures, and the sacred colors of red, yellow, and black are incorporated into the design of the loft. By incorporating these cultural inspired aspects into the design, the

goal is to create a space that exudes feelings of warmth and exoticism. In addition to the cultural inspiration of Papua New Guinea, the space remains modern by using contrast of darks and lights, as well as the use of mixed materials and high-end fixtures. Along with cultural details and modern look, the design is functional by meeting universal design standards.

B AT H R O O M The loft’s bathroom includes a wet area shower and bathtub, with a sliding glass door. The accent wall is a black, petrified wood stone from the stone collection, paired with a travertine tile flooring. The bathroom is universally designed and has plenty of built in storage. The materials chosen for this space are inspired by the culture of Papua New Guinea.

DINING/LIVING RO O M The Dining and Living area of the Loft has colors, materials, textures, and patterns that are inspired from the culture of Papua New Guinea. The cased openings allow the living and dining areas to be open to one another to encourage gathering and togetherness.

The theoretical clients for this charrette project were Liam and Olivia Taylor, a married couple in their mid 40s who recently relocated to a contemporary home in Boulder, Colorado, They were looking to update their kitchen and bath to something more suitable to their styles.

Bathroom Perspective Kitchen Perspective

Olivia likes a shabby-chic vibe, neutrals with pops of color and patterns, while Liam prefers mixed materials and favors function over style. Since moving to Colorado, they wanted a sustainable design and hoped to incorporate that into their remodeling project. They both wanted to have their kitchen and bath spaces be a blend of their tastes to create a design that they can settle into and enjoy for many years to come. Each of these details from the program was considered and implemented when designing the kitchen and bath.

NKBACharrette Completed Fall Year 2

This charette was a remodel project for a bathroom and a kitchen in a contemporary home in Boulder, CO. The remodel is a blend of two styles, incorporating both a shabby chic look, as well as the use of mixed materials. The shabby Chic look is accomplished through a neautral color pallete that contains pops of soft colors including, blues, pinks, and subtle patterns. The design stays modern through the use of mixed materials of stone and wood, and through the open floor plan. The design aims to meet the needs and wants of a functional space, as well as a sustainable design.

Caffeine: A Coffee Shop Completed Spring Year 1

The space designed is a coffee shop that exudes an honest and open feeling through using raw materials for a clean, industrial look. The materials used are honest and natural to what they are. The space is designed to be experiential and inviting. Futuristic Technology is incorporated and adds a modern twist to an industrial look. This space is an environment where customers can learn, interact, relax and enjoy coffee.

06

Interior Perspective

The floor plan of this coffee shop is space planned around the main coffee bar in a “U” shape. On the left side of the plan is the interactive coffee section. This side of the plan allows for customers to choose their preferred coffee beans, milk, and flavors. From there, their coffee is brewed at the bar where they can see and learn from the coffee making experience. On the right side of the plan is seating area with a full window view.

Floor Plan

The materials used in the design consist of mixed materials with an industrial feel. Mostly wood, tiles, and brick are used. The color palette is natural and neutral with contrasting darks and lights. A chalk board wall offers a menu for all to see and allows for the menu to be changed and adapted as needed.

Meditation Chapel Nature Study: Mandarin Duck Completed Spring Year 1

The space designeed is a meditation space inspired by the Mandarin Duck. The space conveys feelings of calmness, thoughtfulness, and comfort, through the use of design elements and principles. The design elements and principles emphasized in the space are line, shape, and color.

Inspration/ Sketches/ Models:

07

Line: Line is implemented into the design by drawing inspiration from the sharp lines found in the Mandarin Duck’s feathers and found in the shape of their body. Feelings of thoughtfulness are implemented into the structure by paying attention to the inspired line details on the duck.

Exterior View

Color: Color is implemented into the design by incorporating stained glass into the structure. Colors similar to the array of colors on the male mandarin duck are used. Part of the structure is white to emphasize a calm, clean feel. Bird’s Eye View

Shape: Shape is implemented into the design by pulling from the shapes of the duck’s wings, head, and feet. Inspiration is drawn not only from the duck’s feathers, but especially from the two sail shaped feathers on the back end of the duck. By incorporating these shapes into the design, feelings of comfort, almost as if visitors were being embraced by the wings of the duck, are emphasized. Interior View
