DESIGN Design Statement STATEMENT The design of interiors affects and impacts people and their everyday lives. The impact of a space that is properly and uniquely designed is something that has always interested me and drives my desire to be an interior designer. I have always struggled with how to use my gift of creativity in a way that will leave a lasting impact on others. Interior design has given me an avenue to do so. Whether it is designing a hospital, so nurses and doctors can effectively do their job for those sick or injured, or making the vision of a dream home come to life for a family, I am able to have a hand in that through design. We spend so much of our lives in a built environment, and I believe that because of this, design is so powerful and can greatly affect our behaviors, productivity, and quality of life. My goal as a designer is to create spaces that enrich everyday lives and create positive environments that have a lasting impact. This portfolio documents my desire to be an effective designer in creating spaces that are functional, sustainable, and innovative. I am very organized, self- motivated, and detail oriented. I am constantly looking for areas I can improve in and better myself as a designer. I seek to eventually work alongside a talented team of designers to further my skills, in the hopes of fulfillng my dreams of becoming a designer, who not only designs spaces, but leaves a lasting impact through my work.

HEAL BEHAVIORAL Heal Behavioral Heal t h Cl i nic HEALTH CLINIC Completed Fall Year 4

A premiere healthcare system in Cleveland is renovating a first-floor suite within a commercial office complex in Fairview Park. This clinic specializes in treating mood disorders as well as other disorders like autism and substance abuse. The staff will use the space to teach patients how to cope with daily stressors. This design challenge calls for well-researched and thoughtful interior design and architecture to create a healing environment while facilitating communication and collaboration, and promoting patient dignity and safety. Behavioral health and therapy is much like a journey. Sometimes its hard, sometimes its ugly. However, other times there is much beauty found in the journey. There is growth and sanctuary found. The Heal Behavioral Health Clinic seeks to tackle the design challenge by providing a place of healing, growth, and sanctuary to these individuals ages 2-18 during their behavioral health journey. By designing a space that includes positive distractions

04

and levels of privacy and safety, the goal is to create feelings of comfort, playfulness, homefulness, and hopefulness, where each individual can find their place within the space. These feelings will be achieved through: • Natural lighting emphasized throughout the space. • Use of soft colors, shapes, and curved lines. • Pockets and nooks of varying privacy levels placed throughout the planned spaced, where each individual can find their comfort. • Wayfinding to aid individuals on their journey through the space by using color coding, and line elements. • Architectural features are implemented to act as positive distractions such as archways, colored windows, and more. • Variety of posture options to create multi-functional spaces and meet the needs of each person.

STIMULATING WAITING ROOM

NON-STIMULATING WAITING ROOM

Providing care to a wide age range means providing many options that will suit multiple audiences. One waiting room acts as stimulating through the use of vibrant warm colors to create an energetic feel, open seating spaces, and play table options. The other waiting room acts as non-stimulating, achieved through the use of cool, calming blue colors, reserved seating options that allow individuals more privacy, and a sensory room for individuals to escape overstimulation.

RESEARCH CONSULT PERSPECTIVE The research consult space used for observation, and often play therapy to communicate feelings, has many fun shape architectural features that may be utilized in therapy. In addition, a warm color palette is used to create energy and interaction. To accommodate for privacy, the windows use a smart glass technology that can be frosted when needed.

LARGE GROUP THERAPY PERSPECTIVES The large group therapy is pictured above with its flexible option of a skyfold wall that can open to create a bigger space depending on the user’s needs. In research, flexibility and multi-purpose spaces were a common need in behavioral health spaces.

RENDERINGS Renderings Upon check in, each individual will be greeted by a receptionist, who will be able to point the patient to the waiting room that fits their specific needs.

CHECK IN AREA

EMPLOYEE BREAK ROOM

The breakroom seeks to be a place of sactuary for employees, allowing for multiple seating choices, emphasis on daylighting for wellbeing, and a neutral color palette to instill calmness and comfort.

For the exam room, in order to create a calming environment in a space that might induce stress, a cool color palette of blues is used along with a fun wallcovering pattern, wood ceiling slats, and patterned upholsteries to act as postitive distractions. The healing garden is an additional exterior space that seeks to provide an outdoor space that encourages healing through nature. The Pergola mimics the wood slat ceiling feature from inside. Curved shapes from the interior design is reflected in the garden as well. The elephant shape adds playfulness and acts as a positve distraction.

Navigation and wayfinding throughout the space is accomodated through the use of color coded lines on the floor leading to each room. All of the lines start at check in and are explained in a guide mounted just outside the clinic doors. The corridor and ancillary cubby space is located across the large group therapy allowing individuals to stop and wait for someone or just find a relaxing place on their journey. The circular shape adds playfulness to what can be a stressful environment.

UNLEASHED Unl e as h ed Cafe & Grooming CAFE & GROOMING Completed Spring Year 3

With a contemporary country twist, the Unleashed Cafe and Grooming seeks to leave customers and their pets feeling refreshed and content. The space allows individuals to sip and stay in the cafe, and enjoy the view of their special pup getting pampered. Unleashed holds so much more value than the average dog groomer. It is a growing family of pups and people, and it’s a place of warmth, simplicity, playing, and relaxation. Instead of going through the mundane routine of dropping off and picking up a dog, Unleashed tends to the needs of their clients so that they’re able to enjoy their dog’s grooming experience. Grab a bite to eat in the cafe, or relax outside surrounded by other friendly pups. Even when a dog

14

doesn’t need to be groomed, they can still play! Play care-free in the Unleashed dog park, or take a splash in the pup pool on a hot summer day. Unleashed strives to kindle a positive bonding experience of simplicity, comfort, and joy that every family, individualand dog deserves. The overall goal of this project was to design a brand with country at its core that brings enthusiasm and brightens the day of both dogs and the humans they live with. Unleashed fills a need in the Springdale, AR community by offering dog grooming, a pet treat shop, and a cafe with snacks and coffee for people all under one roof. Through our color palette and design, the design team wanted to create an eyecatching brand that inspires

NEXT CORPORATE Next Corporate Office OFFICE Completed Fall Year 3

The corporate office for NEXT is designed with the five space typologies in mind: workspace, meeting space, social space, resource and support, and rejuvenation space. These typologies are accomplished through design techniques that include collaboration, technology, lighting, well-being, and inclusion. Much like the nervous system is broken up into three parts -the central, peripheral, and autonomic systems, each controlling their own parts of the body- the space planning of the building is organized with these parts in mind. These three parts of the nervous system work together to allow the body to think, feel, and move;

20

therefore, the office is designed to emphasize spaces that work together as a collective whole to create an adaptable environment filled with innovation, collaboration, and inspiration. These spaces accomplish this through the use of adaptable office furniture, with a variety of postures and textures, as well as a variety of spaces to work in or rejuvenate in. The office also includes unique lighting fixtures, furniture systems, and architectural features that mimic the pathways of the nervous system and electrical impulses in the brain.

OPEN OFFICE PERSPECTIVE

The NEXT open office is a work setting that allows people to be immersed into the brand of the organization. It promotes flexibility and provides access to the latest technology through the use of its video screens, as well as its FlexMobile Power Solutions. Diversity is taken into consideration

2ND FLOOR ELEVATION

through the configuration and postures of the work stations. Warm colors are used in this space to encourage productivity and energy. The corresponding in-between sitting area has cool colors to encourage rest and peace, allowing for employees to break off from the primary work zones if they choose.

PROCESS Process Work WORK A variety of spaces and postures will be provided to increase collaboration. BUBBLING DIAGRAM

Transparency and openness will also be taken into consideration through the space planning, glass walls, and movable walls, so that people utilizing the work spaces will often cross paths and collaborate.

CONCEPT SKETCH

The space is multifunctional throughout the building with the use of movable walls, and easily movable furniture options.

A full time concierge resides in this space. As people enter this area of the NEXT office, the goal is for them to feel welcomed into a space that is warm and lively through its plant wall and low ceilings. The low swooping ceiling compresses visitors only for them to be released into the next space, much like Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural concept.

CONFERENCE/FORUM PERSPECTIVE

The Conference space accommodates video conferencing for a minimum of 6 people. NEXT members often collaborate with partners all over the world, as well as with team members that are based in the HQ location or primarily work from home. This satellite office requires technology that better supports these distributed teams for both scheduled and impromptu discussions. This technology requirement is met through the use of a large Media Scape screen. The goal of the Forum space is to create an active/distance

learning environment that drives member engagement and supports blended learning. This is achieved through furniture that is adaptable and functional. The space can be reconfigured with a variety of layouts that supports both large groups and small groups. Steelcase movable wall systems are put in place to allow the forum and conference spaces to become one large multi purpose room for large groups or collaboration purposes.

WORK CAFE PERSPECTIVE

The work cafe is a space where employees can decompress and enjoy a meal together at any time during the day. As part of the NEXT culture, workers are encouraged to eat with others rather than alone at one’s desk. During non-peak mealtimes,

the space should serve as an alternative meeting space. This space is multi-fauceted and multi-purpose. There are a range of postures from normal cafe seating, to high tops with stools, or booths with privacy screens.

THE SUNSHINE The Sunshine Wellness House WELLNESS HOUSE Completed Spring Year 2

The design of the wellness house is a modern/traditional style that draws inspiration from the sun. This inspiration is derived from the idea of good energy, life, and strength that is much like the good energy we receive from the sun. The floor plan mimics the flow and shape of the sun and its rays including curved walls and openings as well as large curved windows that allow natural light in. The living area acts as the main central area of the house with the other sections of the house “branching off” mimicking the idea of sun rays. The style of the house consists of mixed materials that are natural and sustainable

30

with a neutral color scheme. The neutral color scheme is mixed with pops of deep, rich color. The design encourages life and wellness through layout and space planning, through the way it invites sunlight in with its large windows, and through the spaces and detail items that encourage energy and activity. Just as the sun exudes feelings of warmth and peaceful energy the goal of this design is to emulate these feelings and create a space that flows, is peaceful, aesthetic, and also promotes both physical and mental well-being for the occupants.

THE SITE The Site

EXTERIOR PERSPECTIVE

Moab, Utah is sunny most of the year. Moderate sun exposure has many benefits for health. Vitamin D is known as “the sunshine vitamin” and is a crucial ingredient for overall health. The location of the house strongly supports this aspect of wellness. This lot has spectacular views of the mountains as well as the red rock rims. Hiking and bike trails are ‘right in the backyard’ which supports a healthy and active outdoor lifestyle. The lot has great solar potential for green energy use and reduced energy costs. It is only a short distance from main street that has a lot to offer, inclluding village and farmers markets for fresh produce. Arches National Park is a short drive away for a day to hike and site see the famous natural red rock arches.

THE MALAGAN The Malagan Loft LOFT

Completed Fall Year 2

Culture: Papua New Guinea is a land filled with diversity of culture and traditional people who live al ifestyle of subsistence. The people put on performances that display their unique cultures. From ritualistic Malagan masks, tribal art, and the colorful clay that is used for body decoration by the Huli, to the young men of the Sepik region who undergo painful skin cutting on their backs to display a symbol of strength inspired by the crocodiles of the Sepik; Papua New Guinea is rich in cultural traditions. People of Papua New Guinea live in small village houses, organic in form, and built from natural materials. Black, red, and yellow are the sacred colors of Papua New Guinea and are found in much of the art, traditional customs, and dress.

Many of these cultural details inspired the design decisions of the loft.

The design of the loft is a primitive modern look to convey aspects from the culture of Papua New Guinea. Drawing inspiration from the carved Malagan and the vibrant colors of Papua New Guinea; geometric patterns, natural materials of wood and leather, grass and woven textures, and the sacred colors of red, yellow, and black are incorporated into the design. By incorporating these cultural inspired aspects into the design, the goal is to create a space that exudes feelings of warmth and exoticism. In addition to the cultural inspiration of Papua New Guinea, the space remains modern by using contrast of darks and lights, as well as the use of mixed materials and highend fixtures. Along with cultural details and modern look, the design is functional by meeting universal design standards.

During my internship experience, I completed a variety of tasks. One of the most highlighted is the “Branch of the Future” where I was put in charge of creating a design for a financial institution that is future forward in its features to aid in marketing to clients in order to show the options that are available opposed to just a tradition bank design.
