MSU BASEBALL RADIO NETWORK Mississippi State University is home to one of the nation’s largest and oldest collegiate baseball radio networks, affording fans throughout the Magnolia State and beyond an opportunity to regularly follow the exploits of Starkville’s Team throughout the season. Network programming for the MSU baseball broadcasts is distributed and coordinated through the facilities of Learfield Sports, Inc., headquartered in Jefferson City, Mo. The 2015 Mississippi State University Baseball Radio Network, a team of more than a dozen radio outlets, carries the broadcasts of a 40-game network schedule (all 30 SEC weekend contests and 10 selected non-conference games) plus all postseason competition. In addition to the 40-game network schedule, the broadcasts of most non-network games are carried in the Golden Triangle area by WKBB-FM (100.9) in West Point, Miss. Mississippi State baseball network radio broadcasts (some limited exceptions) are also available on a subscription basis via the internet through HailState.com. The broadcasts feature pregame and postgame interviews, hosted by the “voice” of the Diamond Dawgs, Jim Ellis, and Bart Gregory, who joined the MSU baseball broadcast team in 2012. Radio broadcasts of Bulldog Baseball originated in the 1960s on Starkville radio station WSSO thanks to the work of the late Joe Phillips, a pioneer in radio broadcasting in the state of Mississippi. The press box at Dudy Noble Field is named in honor of Phillips. But credit for turning the single-station broadcast into an impressive collection of radio outlets blanketing the Magnolia State goes to veteran MSU sports broadcaster, Jim Ellis, who in 2015 enters his 37th season of describing the exploits of the Diamond Dawgs. A native of West Point, Miss., and a 1969 MSU grad, Ellis coordinates the operation of State’s baseball radio network. Ellis also handles the play-by-play for MSU football and basketball after having teamed on those broadcasts for more than three decades with MSU radio legend Jack Cristil.
Bart Gregory, a native of Nanih Waiya, Miss., and a 1999 Mississippi State graduate, joined Ellis in the broadcast booth in 2012. He began his career in sports broadcasting at the University of West Alabama in 2000 and returned to Starkville the following year. While at MSU, he initially served as on-air talent for women’s basketball games and select baseball games, while hosting MSU football pregame and postgame shows. Gregory’s affiliation with the MSU athletics family began in 2000 with his appointment as an account representative for the Bulldogs Sports Network. Since 2008, he has served in the Bulldog Club as assistant athletics director for annual giving.
DAWG TALK
The MSU baseball broadcast lineup also includes the popular weekly John Cohen call-in radio show “DawgTalk”. The show begins an eight-week run March 23 and airs each Monday from 7-8 p.m. live from Dawg House Sports Grill II, downtown Starkville’s newest restaurant. Fans can attend in person for free at 217 East Main Street, listen on affiliated radio stations in Mississippi or ask Cohen a question by calling 866-998-4893.
MSU BASEBALL WITH JOHN COHEN
MSU’s weekly baseball television coach’s show returns for its 28th season in 2015. “Mississippi State Baseball with John Cohen” is a joint production of Hail State Video and Bulldog Sports Properties, a property of Learfield Sports. The 30-minute television program runs for eight weeks this spring and is an all-access look inside the Mississippi State baseball program.
SEC NETWORK +
Bulldog fans around the world can watch 36 of State’s 56 regular-season games in 2015 live on the SEC Network + digital app, which replaces the 2014 online video platform HailStateTV as MSU’s HD digital live stream provider.
