NEWSOM AWARD (23) The Newsom Award was begun in 1990 by retired MSU professor and State’s former NCAA Athletic Faculty Representative Walt Newsom. Named in memory of his parents, Carroll and Francis Newsom, the award annually honors the scholastic achievement of a Mississippi State athlete in each MSU sport as well as overall male and female winners.
