In 2012, junior pitcher Chris Stratton was named by the College Sports Information Directors of Anerica (CoSIDA) to the Capital One Academic All-America second team. He becomes the 17th different Mississippi State baseball player accorded academic all-America team honors. Since 1971, MSU has been represented 22 times on CoSIDA’s honor teams on a list that includes two-time honorees second baseman Burke Masters (198990), first baseman Tommy Raffo (198990), third baseman Chuck Daniel (199192), pitcher Jeremy Jackson (1997-98) and infielder Richard Lee (1997-98). Two of those two-time honorees were also named H. Boyd McWhorter SEC ScholarAthletes of the Year, Burke Masters in 1990 and Jeremy Jackson in 1998.

1998: Jeremy Jackson The Newsom Award was begun in 1990 by retired MSU professor and State’s former NCAA Athletic Faculty Representative Walt Newsom. Named in memory of his parents, Carroll and Francis Newsom, the award annually honors the scholastic achievement of a Mississippi State athlete in each MSU sport as well as overall male and female winners. Chuck Daniel and Jeremy Jackson were selected as the overall Newsom Award recipients in 1992 and 1998.
