Preparatory School Guide

Open Day Saturday 6 October 2018

Welcome

from the Head of Preparatory School On behalf of the Preparatory School, I am delighted to welcome you and your family to our 2018 Open Day. Today is an opportunity to discover more about the varied and exciting life at Haberdashers’. You will meet our young gentlemen and staff, and have the chance to see our vibrant Preparatory School. Boys in the Preparatory School are bright, curious about learning and, most importantly, have fun each day! Whether in coding club, in House assemblies, on the football pitch or in the Solai Outdoor classroom, Prep boys will always have a smile on their face. They truly enjoy being part of the Haberdashers’ community. The well-being of our boys is of the utmost importance to us. Our pastoral system is designed to offer each individual the support he requires. The Prep School provides a comprehensive support structure to every boy. Read more in this Open Day guide about our exceptional pastoral care. The Preparatory School building underwent successful extension and refurbishment works over

the summer further enhancing our existing quality facilities. Boys benefit from the very best teaching and learning environment. We have state-of-the-art classrooms, a vibrant library, a spacious multi-purpose hall, and open plan DT and art studios. Please do feel free to ask as many questions as you like throughout the afternoon. Our boys and staff will be more than happy to answer them. I will be speaking in the Prep Hall and warmly invite you to attend one of the three sessions, details of which can be found within this Open Day guide.

Pastoral Care The well-being of our boys is central to everything we do at Haberdashers’. Our pastoral system is designed to offer each individual the support he requires through membership of one of four Preparatory School Houses: Andrews, Davids, Georges and Patricks. Our House system is unique; it allows us to provide a comprehensive support structure to every boy. Contact between School and home may involve any of the main pastoral figures, including: Form Teacher, House Leader or Deputy Head (Pastoral). They are always happy to respond to enquiries from parents.

Co-Curricular Activities A huge range of co-curricular activities is on offer to pupils, including: board games, bushcraft, chess club, choir, cricket club, coding club, drama club, gymnastics, football, Forest Schools (outdoor classroom), history, judo, orchestra, premier strings, rugby, swimming, thinking skills, table tennis and veggie patch. These clubs offered to your son are generally organised during the lunch break to enable boys to go home at 3.15pm (unless they have a pre-arranged music lesson). Year 3 boys are assisted by their Form Teacher when making decisions about which clubs to join. As they progress through the School into Years 5 and 6, the boys may choose to attend a club which finishes at 5.00pm.

Coaches The coach service offers a comprehensive transport network to and from School, covering before and after School activities every day. There are over 110 pick-up points. Morning pick-up times vary but regular return services operate daily at: 3.30pm for the Preparatory School, 4.15pm for end of the normal School day and 5.30pm for after School activities.

Side by side for excellence

The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School and Haberdashers’ Aske’s School for Girls are situated alongside each other. Whilst maintaining single-sex education at separate campuses, the Schools work together in a number of areas. The coach service is shared between both the Boys’ and Girls’ Schools and there are some opportunities for joint co-curricular activities, such as our coding club. This helps pupils at both schools prepare for the co-educational experience at university and in places of work.

School Shop The School Shop is located in The Medburn Centre, where all our School uniform is available. At the start of term, the Shop operates an appointment system.
