A Message from HabiJax President & CEO, Mary Kay O’Rourke It’s hard to believe that it’s been 5 years since we committed all of our resources into the revitalization of the New Town neighborhood. Because of the support of community partners and stakeholders, our $16 million capital campaign to provide homeownership opportunities and provide housing services for families was a success. At that time, we did not know what the future would bring, but we knew that first in our minds was making a significant impact and being a catalyst for change in New Town was imperative. Since then, so much has happened. As you will see in this report, 315 families’ lives have been impacted and the community is being transformed. We also began to look past housing and toward the economic development of the neighborhood, providing services to locally owned establishments to help enhance their business’s façades, while gathering input and data for corridor business improvements on Kings Road. This year, we completed another assessment in New Town, looking at the condition of the housing stock. Although five years ago, we thought that the blight would be removed from the community, it was evident that there is still an issue with

3

abandoned and boarded up properties. As you will see in some of the quotes from New Town residents in this report, residents are happy with the progress, but also see that blight is still an issue. As a result, we are committed to another 4 years in New Town to serve 100 families through homeownership and complete 100 repairs for New Town residents. It is only because of your support that we have been so successful, and we are grateful to each and every one of you for your generosity. Five years ago, I let you know how excited all of us at HabiJax were about the direction that God was calling us to move in as we embarked on our community development work. Five years later that excitement continues, and we hope you will continue on this journey with us together as we build communities and change lives. Blessings,

Mary Kay O’Rourke President & CEO

Where We Work

The lasting impact being made right here in New Town

In Jacksonville, 52% of renters are paying more than 30% of their income toward housing, which classifies them as cost burdened by their housing expenses. Here’s a sobering statistic - in Jacksonville, in order for a family to afford a 2 bedroom apartment at a fair market rate of $1,012 and not be cost burdened by their housing costs, a family making minimum wage must work 89 hours a week just so they can afford their housing and other needed expenses. Community Impact Survey HabiJax provides an affordable homeownership opportunity where families can make affordable mortgage payments, contribute to the tax base through yearly property taxes, and contribute their disposable income to the local economy. In addition to the financial impact that homeownership has on families, it can also contribute to an increase in quality of life. We recently surveyed some of our homeowners to gage the impact of our homeownership program and surveyed residents of New Town about their quality of life and the quality of life living in their neighborhood. You’ll see some of these results below, and their responses on the opposite page.

“HabiJax didn’t allow me to give up, they believe in me and kept pushing me. In May 2015, I became a Homeowner … HabiJax taught me things that I honestly had no clue about in a home and it definitely was a great experience for me.”

“It helped us as a family to become financially stable. A piece of mind from rent [and] landlords. A good feeling of owning your home, it gives great pride. It also provided stability from moving consistently. HabiJax is indeed a big blessing in my life.” “I don’t worry because my house payment stays the same and I have control of my finances I have difficulty walking and my house has no steps which is a great help.”

“I feel safe now that they are building homes in the neighborhood. [A lot of change] in the neighborhood now.” “Just a great program and truly a blessing from the Lord. HabiJax has helped many families and I am grateful.”

“This neighborhood needs . . . less over grown fields and abandoned homes.”

“side walks need repair, grass between street and sidewalk needs to be cut so kids have clean path to walk to school, some parts are clean and some aren’t.”

“It is much better than it was in the 90’s and I am glad about that.”

“just the streets need to be clean up so it can be a better place to live at. We go door to door to see how the neighbors are doing.”

Service in Action

Chase Partnership brought more homes, volunteer hours to New Town Through a partnership with Chase and Habitat for Humanity International, HabiJax was the recipient of a generous donation of over $242,000 from Chase this year to build and renovate 5 homes in New Town. As if that amazing donation wasn’t enough, Chase team members also came out in force to work on these homes, sending over 600 volunteers over 11 weeks! During that time, they ended up working on 17 homes for families in New Town. It is companies like Chase who help HabiJax fulfill our mission of providing affordable homeownership and housing services to families in need. We are grateful for how giving they are of their time, talent, and treasure!

Our Familes Are Offered Hope

The Lewis family earned their home with sweat, hard work, and financial planning

Jeralige Lewis was grateful to relatives who put up her and her young son Da’kari in their house, but she longed for the sense of accomplishment that comes with owning a home. She wanted to show her son that he could earn great things if he was willing to put in the hard work.

be able to buy a house, but have completely reshaped the way she manages her finances. Today, Jeralige and Da’Kari now have their own home in Jacksonville’s New Town neighborhood where they both revel in their sense of accomplishment. Jeralige concedes that the program was challenging at times but says, “it was all worth it in the end”. And though she completed all the requirements to become a HabiJax homeowner, she continues to volunteer at special events and gives her testimony at the homebuyer education workshops because she is so appreciative.

Thanks to a referral by her friend Briana, Jeralige was able to find a program that could offer her a chance to work toward her dream: HabiJax. Jeralige applied to HabiJax and immediately took on the requirements that come with our program, despite being a single mom and working full-time with AT&T. Jeralige spent most of her days off working at the HabiJax ReStore and was able to complete her 300 sweat equity hours in just six months! She also showed the impact the HabiJax homebuyer education program had on her as she was able to raise her credit score by 100 points! She says the lessons she learned in these classes helped her not only

Jeralige and Da’kari have a special story to tell, and yet their story is like many at HabiJax in fiscal year 2015: a family that realized the dream of homeownership when given a fair chance to earn it for themselves.

Thanks to the generous support of the Jacksonville community, it would be an understatement to say that the ReStore has had a banner year. With material donations coming from individuals and corporations alike, the ReStore serves the Jacksonville community with affordable construction materials and supplies, along with home goods and furnishings.

The HabiJax ReStore also has a service that our current donors love – a deconstruction program. For no charge, ReStore team members will go to a home or business and remove kitchen cabinets, countertops, and appliances. Once complete, all plumbing and electrical will be capped and the area cleaned up. These donations, as all donations to the ReStore, are tax deductible and is a win-win for everyone involved!
