Salary negotiation is an important skill which comes not only from experience but also through effective communication. Following useful tips may enable an individual to secure an attractive package.

Things you did in months, will be done in days or sometimes within hours. But no matter how unpredictable this period might be, the only key to success is being humble and open for those challenges with courage and steadfast mind. Estimate Living Expenses

Indepth analysis of needs and wants. Because only then one is able to know the estimated monthly expenditure. Basics like rent, transportation and the cost of living can vary from individual to individual, therefore critically analyze all factors.

Research Salaries

Do your research about salary for a similar role in market relevant to the required skillset. There are numerous resources available to do such research such as Glassdoor.com, Payscale.com, etc. This will help you in identifying the market trend and possibly provide guidance on an acceptable range for the role.

Propose a Counter Offer

Based on the expenditure and market survey, you can propose a counter offer to the employer. Show your willingness to join while making a counter offer to employer. It is also important to make the employer understand the reasons behind the counter offer therefore appropriate justifications are a must. It may be unwise to propose a counter offer without proper justification.

Don’t Negotiate Just to Negotiate

Negotiate only when it’s important to negotiate rather just to prove that you are a good negotiator.

Evaluate the Overall Package

It is important to evaluate the complete package. Evaluate the entire package including responsibilities, exposure, learning opportunities, travel, location, working hours and so forth. At times the job may offer less in terms of monetary value but much in terms of experience and other non-monetary benefits, therefore consider everything the role has to offer and decide accordingly.
