brilliant, unbroken century stand between Gavin Tonge and Yannick Leonard helped Leeward Islands pull off a thrilling run chase and beat Guyana by five wickets here Monday. Chasing 279 for victory, the Leewards reached their target for the loss of five wickets, late in the second session on the final day of their sixth-round contest in the Regional Four-Day Championship. Leonard, a specialist leftarm spinner, supported with 37 not out, in a sixth wicket partnership worth 101. It carried the Leewards from what looked like certain defeat at 178 for five to an unlikely victory a few hours later at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground. The run chase was, however, set up by Devon Thomas who stroked a superb 90 while Jahmar Hamilton got 54, in a 140-run, fourth wicket stand. When both fell, the Leewards still had much to do to avoid their fourth de-
feat of the season, but Tonge and Leonard crowned themselves heroes. The win was only their
second in five outings in the tournament, moving them to 40 points. They remain fifth in the standings, however.

ICC announces Team of the Tournament
T
he International Cricket Council (ICC) today announced the men’s Team of the Tournament of the ICC World Twenty20 Bangladesh 2014, with India’s MS Dhoni named captain. The team includes four players from India, two from both South Africa and West Indies, and one representative each from Australia, Netherlands and Sri Lanka. Chosen by a select group of experts,* the team was aimed at being suited for Bangladesh conditions, on the basis of performances in the tournament only. Statistics were used but were not the sole basis for selections. Selection Panel Chairman and member of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees, David Boon, said of the selection: “It was a very difficult task for the panel to pick a team of 11 from the exciting players who featured in this tournament. “As the selection criteria for the Team of the Tournament are the performances of players in the

conditions during the ICC World Twenty20 2014, some of the best players in world cricket had to be left out of the team. “Bowlers in particular performed strongly throughout this tournament, and the side we have selected includes three of the most impressive bowlers in Dale Steyn, Samuel Badree and Lasith Malinga. The team also contains six specialist batsmen, including Stephan Myburgh from the Netherlands as an opening batsman, as well as three all-rounders, including MS Dhoni as a wicket-keeper
batsman.” The panel faced a difficult choice for a number of positions, and players who were considered but who did not ultimately make the team included India’s Amit Mishra, Pakistan’s Ahmed Shehzad, the South Africa duo of AB de Villiers and Imran Tahir, Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews and Rangana Herath, and West Indies’ Dwayne Bravo and Sunil Narine. Rain stops play in Mecca to Mackenzie b/ball tourney – Linden tops Georgetown in pre-games
D
ynas Ravens were on their way to a dominant victory before rain ended the game in a draw on Saturday evening at the Mackenzie Sports Club hard Court in Linden. With 34s left in the third quarter, and Ravens up 42-30, a heavy downpour stopped the remainder of the game that saw Ravens on course to a blowout win. However, the prize money was split down the middle by both teams as the game was deemed a draw. Meanwhile, in the games leading up to the feature d game, Linden dominated their Georgetown counterparts. Kashif and Shanghai Kings got the ball rolling with a 53-51 win over the Pacesetters who could not make the crunch- time plays to win. Abdulla Hamid came up big for the Kings with 15 points while Steve Neils Jr. added 13 points Omally Sampson also dropped 11 points in the win. Travis Burnett was the game’s leading scorer with 18 points, while Randy Richardson scored 13 points in the effort that fell just short for the win. In the rematch that featured the teams that played
for third in the Road to Mecca, the result proved to be different when Amelia’s Ward Jets defeated Bounty Colts 68-62. Point man for the Jets, Emmanuel Archibald, led from the front with 16 points displaying tremendous finesse around the rim that brought high reactions from the large Linden crowd. Archibald took over the final three minutes after the game was tied 55 to lead the team to victory with a 13-7 run. Alistair Webster scored 15 points and Shane Webster 13 points in the winning effort to give Linden two in two for the night before the heavy downpour. Colts’ big three of Shelroy Thomas, Nikkoloi Smith and Dave Causway would all drop in double digit performances of 14, 14 and 16 points respectively in the loss. Sports Management Inc. who planned and managed the event, was sponsored by AnsaMcAl under its Stag Beer brand, Paladin Security and Michael Singh, Haslyn Graham, President of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation, Nigel Hinds, Troy Mendonca, Lennox Cush, Courts and Trophy Stall of Bourda Market.
