Gladwin Samuels no longer Director of Prisons

irector of Prisons Gladwin Samuels has been reassigned to the Home Affairs Ministry where he will be serving as the Assistant Coordinator on People Smuggling. The Former Prison Director was sent on 132 days of accumulated leave back in December 2020 and was slated to return to work on April 25. On Friday evening,

Samuels said in anticipation of resuming duty, he wrote to Home Affairs Minister, Robeson Benn on April 23, notifying him of the upcoming end of his leave. He said that he was informed that he will be attached to the Home Affairs Ministry as the Assistant Coordinator on People Smuggling which will take effect from April 26. That attachment will

be on a full-time basis until further notice, he was informed. Additionally, he said that he was informed that he is required to report to the Minister of Home Affairs, who will apprise him of the details pertaining to his duties. However, strangely, in issuing his statement on Friday evening Samuels also informed the media that further questions on his appointment should

be directed to his lawyer, Selwyn Pieters. Samuels was appointed Director of Prisons in 2017 after Carl Graham proceeded on pre-retirement leave. Samuels acted in the capacity and was officially confirmed for the position in January 2020. Following Samuels’ departure on accumulated leave, Nicklon Elliot has been acting in the position of Director of Prisons. (G9)
