Building Opportunities for Life
Welcome Welcome to Horatio House; I am pleased to welcome you to our Prospectus and our school. I qualified as a teacher in 1996 and since then I have worked in a variety of different schools, not just in England, but in Ghana and Myanmar. As well as experience in education, I also have worked as a nurse, a secretary and a funeral arranger. All these different jobs have helped me to develop a strong philosophy about what school is all about. School is about learning, not just in curriculum areas, but about the world, its people, relationships and life. At Horatio House we are all learning every day and are ...

Ethos and Aims Our ethos is for everyone to achieve their very best through commitment, challenge and realistic expectations. Our mission is to provide a happy, caring and welcoming environment, where the contributions from every individual are valued and success is celebrated. We hope to provide a learning environment which enables every student to have the opportunity to achieve their best and to have selfbelief in their own worth. We could not deliver our mission without the valuable contribution and involvement of our parents, carers, guardians and wider community in supporting the aims of the school. We aim to enable each pupil to: *
communicate and interact effectively with others and the world around them
*
become independent learners
*
value themselves and their own achievements and accept and show tolerance of others
*
enjoy being part of the school community
*
participate in, and contribute to, the wider social community
*
lead a safe, happy and fulfilling lifestyle.

Organisation for pupils At Horatio House we have a high ratio of adults to pupils. Each of our pupils belongs to a small tutor group and our mentors are always there to support anyone who’s struggling. Classes are small too, and this means we can give everybody the individual learning experience they need. Everybody has difficult times in life and at Horatio House we have a counsellor who is able to offer a quiet space to talk stuff through and share problems in a confidential environment. Sometimes staff need to see her too! Note: our counsellor does not share information that is discussed in counselling sessions with any parent or staff member except in the case of a Safeguarding issue being raised. She will always ensure that the pupil is aware of her duty of care if any such issues arise. Separate consent is required for counselling. We also have a drum tutor who comes in every week. There is no charge for these services, and pupils are all invited to request a taster session to see if it will work for them. Page Four

Curriculum Everybody who attends Horatio House has had disruptions to their education. Our curriculum is designed to fill in
gaps and accelerate learning so that pupils have the best chance to build opportunities for life.
At Horatio House we concentrate on English, maths and science, but we
make sure we have plenty of time for art and to learn how to cook and to keep fit.
“Learning and progress in
mathematics, science and art is strong.

Extra Curricular We take every opportunity to reward good attendance and good behaviour at Horatio House. Our Student Council often suggests trips that they think would be fun, and we can usually make it happen. We also keep a close eye on what is happening in Suffolk and Norfolk and make sure that we get involved in events that help our school community both contribute to, and take advantage of, what is on offer in the local area.

Student Council Everybody at Horatio House is invited to join the Student Council.
We meet every couple of weeks and
talk about what is going well and how
we can make things better by sharing our ideas and working together.
The Student Council is an opportunity to have your say and influence the decisions we make.
Last year the Student Council helped
choose new members of staff and were instrumental in improving the lunch menu.
