Emancipation A
ugust 01 has found itself as one of the most important dates in the history of Guyana, brought about by the infamous and inhumane practices of slavery. It is on this day in 1834 that slavery was abolished by the British Legislature after more than two hundred years of extreme captive labour. It has become known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day.
Although August 01 is celebrated as a day of reflections and great significance, there are observances throughout the month with cultural expositions, exhibitions and lectures

Monument of Damon at Anna Regina Square on the Essequibo Coast. One of many slaves who displayed great courage and leadership in the quest for freedom. Others who sacrificed their lives for this cause include Cuffy and Quamina. and symposiums. The highpoint however is the day itself with huge celebrations mainly at the National Park, representing a people, despite a great historical injustice, displaying great pride in the sacrifices of their ancestors and heritage. The event in 1834 has shepherded this country, to a large extent, a radical change in the colonial way of life with the establishment of villages, the struggle for a Trade Union Movement, opportunities in the Public Service and the opening up of the hinterland through the early pork knockers. Freedom Day also kicked off another important chapter in Guyana's history; Indentured labour which attracted Portuguese, Chinese and East Indians.
