( R e u t e r s ) P a k i s t a n ’s Sarfraz Ahmed and Shoaib Malik shared a fluent partnership of 163 to lead the tourists to a consolation four-wicket win over England in the fifth and final one-day international in Cardiff on Sunday. The hosts, put into bat, mustered a respectable 302 for nine from 50 overs but their bowling lacked penetration and Pakistan reached the victory target with 10 balls to spare. England, who won the series 4-1, never produced the explosive power that has characterised their recent one-day batting. Jason Roy made 87 off 89 balls and Ben Stokes 75 off 76 but they lost wickets at regular intervals, Pakistan seamer Hasan Ali completing figures of 4-60. England fast bowler M a r k Wo o d t o o k t w o wickets in one over to reduce the touring side to 77 for three before Sarfraz and Shoaib assumed control. They attacked England spinner Liam Dawson on his ODI debut and Sarfraz struck an excellent 90 off 73 balls before skying Dawson to Alex Hales on the boundary. The experienced Shoaib also fell to a catch in the deep off Dawson for 77 but Mohammad Rizwan’s unbeaten 34 guided Pakistan home. The sides, who drew 2-2 in the test series, meet in a one-off Twenty20 international in Manchester on Wednesday. Scores: Pakistan 304 for 6 (Sarfraz 90, Malik 77) beat England 302 for 9 (Roy 87, Stokes 75, Hasan 4-60) by four wickets.

Eagles draw Jetty Gunners By Franklin Wilson Young Achievers was the only team to rake in full points when the West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) / Stag sponsored Senior League resumed at the Den Amstel Community Centre ground on the weekend. While Young Achievers displayed little or no signs of inactivity in their 5-0 whipping of Vegae Boys, Eagles of Stewartville had to dig deep to earn a 1-1 draw with Jettey Gunners in the other game on Saturday, while Uitvlugt Warriors floored a plethora of opportunities yesterday as Stewartville rallied to earn a 0-0 draw at the same venue. Lexroy Mansfield blasted a hat-trick for Young Achievers, hitting the back of the nets in the 59th, 60th and 61st minute. Lloyd Prince netted the initial goal with just 5 minutes on the game clock, while the sealer was converted by Emmanuel Thomas in the 66th minute. Jetty Gunners almost pulled off an upset win over Eagles, the former drawing first blood in the 16th minute thanks to a Shawn Williams goal. The Gunners were able to hold on to that advantage for quite a long time but eventually broke under pressure when Eagles found the

back of the nets for the equalizer in the 65th minute, Orlando Henry performing the honours. Eagles squandered a late penalty that would have given them full points; the Gunners left the venue contented with their single point. Yesterday, Uitvlugt Warriors, currently sitting third in the standings saw their winning streak after three matches being halted by old rivals and neighbours, Stewartville. The Warriors created chances almost at will but their focus in the final third was as miserable as can be as they missed chance after chance, almost as if they had practiced for that. Stewartville can count themselves lucky on an afternoon ideal for football with the rain intervening just before kick off to cool things down. Jamal Petty, Keion Duke and Charles Stobie were the main culprits for Uitvlugt, missing chances throughout the match. Turning in a sterling performance for Stewartville in defence were Steffon Bentick and Joslyn Small. Den Amstel are the current points leaders with 15 points from five wins, they are also unbeaten.

Courtney Walsh relishes Bangladesh challenge

Courtney Walsh (Photo: usacricketers.com) DHAKA, Bangladesh (AFP) – Former West Indies paceman Courtney Walsh said his love of a challenge has prompted him to accept the job of specialist bowling coach for the Bangladesh team. Walsh, 53, this week agreed a three-year deal after he completed his assignment as a selector for the West Indies in August, a post he occupied for the last two years. “I have always dreamed of being involved with an international team,” Walsh said in his first press conference in Dhaka on Sunday. “There was a natural

instinct to come here. I have never ever played in Bangladesh in my career. I played against them a couple of times. “It was another chance to make new friends, and I always like challenges and get a satisfactory end result at the end of everything. It is a combination of both. I am happy to be here,” he said. Walsh, who took 519 Test wickets and 227 in ODIs in a 17-year international career, replaced former Zimbabwean captain Heath Streak in the position. Streak stepped down in May after helping Bangladesh make steady

progress in the pace bowling department during his twoyear tenure. “I am hoping by the time I leave Bangladesh, there will be much improvement. What really impressed me were the strides that Bangladesh Cricket Board wants to make for their players,” Walsh said. “They have gone leaps and bounds to improve the game. Obviously they want to improve their rankings and I would like to be part of that. Wa l s h ’s m o v e t o B a n g l a d e s h , h o w e v e r, comes at a tense time for the South Asian team. Only in late August did England finally agree to go ahead with a tour in October, after 20 people, mostly foreigners, were killed in an attack on a Dhaka cafe, with the Islamic State group claiming responsibility. Bangladesh also recently appointed Sri Lankan Thilan Samaraweera as their batting consultant ahead of the England series while officials said they are in the process of naming a spin bowling coach. England will arrive in Dhaka on September 30 to play two Tests and three oneday internationals.
