What happened to the WDCA Cornelia Ida, Zeeburg triumph tournament prize money? DEAR EDITOR, Please permit me space to address this concern. Over the past two weeks there were three finals contested for West Demerara Cricket Association (WDCA) competitions at Joe Veira Park; one final dating back to 2013 and the other two being for 2015 and 2016 respectively. Firstly, the 2013 WDCA 40-Over tournament, which was played in it’s almost entirety during the said year, that final was played between Meten Meer Zorg West and Independence SC on 16th October 2016. Meten Meer Zorg West emerged victorious and were presented with a trophy and $40,000, an amount which isn’t even half of the amount which was announced at the initiation of the competition

back in 2013. On Sunday 23rd October 2016, the final of the 2015 WDCA 20/20 tournament was contested after one year of postponement, Cornelia Ida clashed with Wales CDC in a game that was slated to commence at 9:00am. However, officials and grounds-men did not turn up to the facility until 10:00am, thus forcing a truncated game of 15 overs per side. This tournament also had a prize of $100,000 and trophy, as was understood when it was launched back in 2015. Winners, Cornelia Ida Cricket Club merely received a trophy as a token of their efforts for about 10 games. In the second final of the day on Sunday 23rd October 2016, Zeeburg Sports Club came up against All Youths

Sports Club. Zeeburg emerging the victors in that clash, they also only received a mediocre trophy. With them being the 2016 WDCA Champions, the $100,000 which was supposed to be awarded to the winners, again not presented or accounted for. So one wonders that over the course of three years and three competitions, where teams have spent thousands of dollars for balls, umpire fees, grounds-men and transportation to participate in the WDCA competitions, where have the winner’s rewards vanished to? An urgent intervention is needed into this situation to encourage cricket continues to be played on the West Demerara. Yours Sincerely, A Concerned Cricketer

Veteran King dropped; Selman and Knight return for India tour ST JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – Batsman Stacy-Ann King has paid the price for a run of poor form and has been dropped from the West Indies Women’s squad for next month’s tour of India. The 33-year-old lefthander was not part of the 14member unit announced yesterday by the West Indies Cricket Board for the sixmatch limited overs tour which runs from November 10-22. King and seamer Erva Giddings are the only two changes from the squad that contested the recent OneDay International series against England which they lost 3-2. They have been replaced by the Barbadian duo of Shakera Selman and Kycia Knight – both fixtures in the squad previously. The outstanding Stafanie Taylor will once again lead the touring party which includes veteran offspinner Anisa Mohammed as vice-captain, along with former skipper Merissa Aguilleira, talented teenaged opener Hayley Matthews and seasoned c a m p a i g n e r, Deandra Dottin. King, who has played 66 ODIs and 76 Twenty20s, failed to make any impression during the England series, managing just 43 runs in four outings. Her returns in the Twenty20 World Cup earlier this year were equally disappointing, gathering

The winning Cornelia Ida side.

Hope disappointed over missed century but pleased with his role in opening win

Seamer Shakera Selman

just 42 runs in five innings. The 30-year-old Giddings, meanwhile, who made her debut in the recent England series, played just two matches and took a single wicket. Windies Women will welcome back the experience of Selman for the tough India trip, with the 27-year-old seamer having already played 62 ODIs and 59 T20Is. The 24-year-old Knight, an opener, will also bring vital experience for the tour. She has played 41 ODIs and 33 T20Is. West Indies will play three ODIs and three T20Is on the Indian tour, with the one-dayers all designated

as ICC Women’s Championship games. Points from these contests will go towards determining the four automatic qualifiers for next year’s 50over World Cup in England. All games have been scheduled for the city of Vijayawada, in the coastal state of Andhra Pradesh. SQUAD – Stafanie Taylor (captain), Anisa Mohammed (vice captain), Merissa Aguilleira, Shemaine Campbelle, Shamilia Connell, Britney Cooper, Deandra Dottin, A f y F l e t c h e r, K y c i a Knight, Hayley Matthews, Chedean Nation, Shaquana Quintyne, Shakera Selman, Tremayne Smartt.

DAMBULLA, Sri Lanka, CMC – Opener Kyle Hope says he is disappointed that he was not able to register his first List A century but is delighted his contribution helped to lay the foundation for West Indies A’s opening victory against Sri Lanka A on Tuesday. Hope struck eight boundaries in the top score of 81 from 112 balls as West Indies A pulled off a commanding 165 run win over Sri Lanka A at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium. “There is some disappointment but at the end of the day it is still a personal best,” said Hope. “So from that stand point I did better than I ever done before. At the end of the day we won so my contribution was worthwhile”. Pope featured in three important partnerships around which the innings was constructed as the

West Indies posted 267 for six. He put on an opening stand of 40 with Chadwick Walton, 42 for the third wicket with Andre Fletcher who contributed 26 and 63 with captain Jason Mohammed for the fourth wicket. “I mixed some patience but I must say all the guys played well and it was unfortunate I didn’t carry on but I must say well played to the rest of the guys,” said Hope. “They gave me great support and when I was out they took over and did a great job to put us in a commanding position on what I would call a challenging wicket”. M o h a m m e d , H o p e ’s Trinidad & Tobago Red Force teammate, supported with 58 from 71 balls and Rovman Powell added a whirlwind 55 from 35 balls that included three fours and three sixes. Off-spinner Jon-Russ

Jaggesar, with a career best four for 29, including two wickets in two balls, led the demolition of Sri Lanka A for 102 in 32.3 overs. Jagessar, Hope’s Red Force teammate in the Regional Super50 Tournament, and Ronsford Beaton, his T&T Knight Riders teammate in the Caribbean Premier League Tw e n t y 2 0 To u r n a m e n t , along with left-arm fastmedium bowler Delorn Johnson shared nine wickets between them. “I think the bowlers need full credit. I thought they did a really good job. The energy was great to start and we made the most of our chances,” said Hope. “We pushed Sri Lanka on the back foot really early and after the fast bowlers did that when JonRuss came on he continued and that was the reason we won with such a big margin”.
